exactly, you have to change your thinking to the AF systems, they are different. have to learn the new AF modes. the z series for me, within my kit, is supplemental. As was the fuji system i had, and the a7iii, i used them for travel and for video. now, i can just stick with one brand, and share glass. has anyone ever tried to use the a7r3 or a73 for sports? i have, and it sucks balls. eye focus doesnt work when people are wearing helmets. i will still use my d5, and my d850, but ill add the z6 when i need the silent shooting or the video, or the lighter load, case in point, im working a convention next week where ill be shooting for 12hrs and walking for atleast 15 miles, ill def be bringing the z6 as my second body and leaving the d850 with grip at home. that extra heft can be felt over the duration of a day. and i find the z6 files, better in the high iso's than the d850. though they did test the z7, and not the z6. ive used both and id say the z6 AF is better. ...Show more →
When they wear helmets, the sensor could not recognize the eyes. That's totally acceptable to me. If A7R3's AF doesn't work for you, then mirrorless system is not for you. I can not believe people using mirrorless cameras to shoot sports then complain about AF. If have to use mirrorless cameras, then Sony A9 is the only one that works..

Perhaps try increasing the size of the AF point. Pinpoint and the next step above that use contrast detect only so will be slower than the hybrid AF with the large spot

D750 seems to focus nearly instantly Z7 is hunting for a second or two.
I am just using Z7 exactly the way I shoot D750, so I believe my be I am missing something (user error) but not able to figure out what. Will do tests tomorrow again and see

Huh? I literally just posted about using the mirror less camera for sports. I was using examples of people comparing the Nikon z series to Sony a73 a7r3. And how much better Sony is at fast action sports. Which it is not. I've used them all. Sony sent me an a7r3, a9, and I own a a73 (for video) and with the exception of the a9, the z and a series cameras all work similarly when it comes to AF focus for sports. I think people are expecting the same type DSLR performance out of the mirrorless af systems and completely knocking it, because it doesn't act the way it normally does with DSLRs.

I can comment about X-T2, and very similar experience.
It took me some time to figure it out after dslr, but at the end, I was able to get some very good basketball images.
I have no experience with z or a cameras yet, in sports.

it took me about half a period of hockey to figure out the different nuances in AF systems between the D5 and z6, but half way thru the game, i was shooting with the z6 no problem. 90% keeper rate or more, with arguably a "slower performing lens" in the 80-400 AFS compared to my normal fast zooms.

My hockey season begins Friday, and I'll be testing the Z6 with adapted lenses as soon as LensRentals can send me one. I may have missed it, but why did you shoot with an 80-400?

i feel 200mm is not long enough for tighter shots of players, and across rink action. the 80-400 is fast and sharp enough where i dont mind the image quality hit compared to my 70-200 vr2, and at times i like to roam around to shoot fan interaction and in game action from an elevated area, and rather not have to lug around a 70-200 and my 200-400.

This did the trick I was using 2nd smallest size to mimic D750 AF point in VF. If I increase it to next size Af is pretty instant and hunts only in low contrast situation which I am able to easily guess before pressing the shutter. This while not ideal give enough predictability to operate camera who much of an issue
So I am happy :-)

Agh am I the only Z7 owner that's torn about whether or not to "downgrade" to the Z6? I'm within my return window.. aggggh so torn.
I can't think of another mirrorless camera that crosses off so many boxes on my "fun camera" list, but I am just questioning whether I need a third 45mp body (as I already have a couple D850s). Have already owned the sonys, fujis, etc and being able to use all of my Nikon F lenses is a huge selling point.
I think I wouldn't have the same dilemma with the Z6 to be honest (or if I didn't already have the D850).
p.32 #10 · Official Z Series Camera and Lens Discussion
I was just thinking the same I too VERY tempted to replace Z7 with Z6 and pick 35 and still save some change.
On the other hand wondering whether Z7 will work out better in long run as this will be my only camera (currently have EM1 and D750) for may be at least next 2-3 years.

That is exactly what I was pondering doing - ie get the Z6 plus 24-70 and FTZ kit, and add the 35 f1.8S. I suppose I should just go ahead and get the 35 f1.8 S regardless as it's the lens that I really want right now...

I want the 35 f1.8 too but don't really have a critical need for it so I guess I'll hold out and see if Nikon includes the S lenses in a sale some time in the next few months.

Love the camera, but have one annoying feature. The cover to the card keeps opening as I slid the body into my camera bag. Any suggestions? Be more careful, can this be adjusted?

Ended up picking up the 35 f1.8 S (and sold on my x100f), and am happy with it. Extremely sharp lens! I’m always impressed how well the S lenses perform

I think the card's door of your camera may have problem. My one never been opened regardless how I hold the camera. There are 2 pins to hold the door. Any of them is broken?

I got the Z6 kit with the zoom, adaptor then I added 35 1.8S as well. I do like both the zoom and the 35S. I'm waiting to get 50S although I'm using 50mm 1.8G with the adaptor now. I feel Z lenses are sharper than G lenses but I never compared.
Actually, I really want Z 85mm 1.8S. I want this lens badly because I prefer FL 85mm over 50 for portraits.
I hope we can have it this summer. Any chance?

Nice! I'm hoping the 85 f1.8 S comes out soon as well. I'm likely going to sell on my 85 f1.8G as I've been using my 105 f1.4E more lately for headshots because I prefer the colors coming out of it. Also though the 85 f1.8G is sharp enough, you get spoiled with these S lenses and the latest F-mount E lenses like the 28 f1.4E and 105 f1.4E (especially on the Z7 sensor).

This happened to me when I grabbed the camera a certain way and I don’t think there is any other way to avoid this than to not grab the camera that certain way. Not a good advice I know but I have had no other issue with the cover what so ever so it’s just this one thing I have to avoid

I don't know if this has been debated yet; I noted that VR system (when it is on) is "always" on when the lens is attached to my Z6, even when I do not press the shutter release (I can ear the motors' noise in the lens). This should drain the battery. To safe energy, I should not forget to switch off the VR when I'm not taking photographs. I'm a little bit disappointed ... Hope a future fw update could solve this issue. Or am I doing something wrong
