I agree overall
but it's still crazy to most of us who forget the jewish holidays
probably one of the busiest weeks for photographers of the year, with weddings being in PRIME TIME, among other reasons.
I hope a professional wedding photographer isn't WAITING for a camera to work a wedding. I expect pros have their act together and have the gear they need to do the job.
The urgency of folks lamenting that B&H is closed for a week strikes me as a feeding frenzy by those who simply need to have the latest and greatest whatever AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. They're likely the same folks standing in lines at the Apple store to buy the next iPhone... seriously?
Relax folks. The new cameras definitely look interesting and speculating about the latest and greatest is a time honored pleasure, but if you really want to take a photo you likely already have everything you need to do so. I certainly do and I'm shooting with lenses that have been out of production for decades. It is possible to do so... and get excellent results.

Not to mention that you gotta wonder about a 'professional' who would use a new format, untested, new camera for a paid gig - I can see as a secondary system to get used to it and understand its limitations, but yeah if you're depending on it that's pretty suspect.

I agree.
But I needed an extra Profoto trigger and luckily ordered it before the cutoff this morning.
Things break and sometimes you need a new thing. So you just have to go somewhere else.
Regarding the comparison with apple folks. Ah I don’t know. I try not judge people like that. Maybe you’re right. But still, to the folks who don’t get that religion- it’s a bit of a shock. It’s like going to chic fila on a Sunday and being disappointed.

A back-up supplier always seems like a good idea, not just for religious holidays but for out-of-stock situations as well.
I'm old enough to remember the 'blue' laws in New Jersey which prohibited the sale of a whole range of items on Sundays . . . where stores would have whole departments taped off . . .

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but I read that once CFExpress comes on stream, the Z cameras will be upgraded via firmware to support it. Some say that it will allow continuous shooting in RAW. They claim this was confirmed by Nikon during presentations. If true it would explain the limited buffer size, as they might have hoped that by launch time CFExpress was up and running.

I've read the same but don't think there has been official confirmation.

Yeah.... I've been burned way too many times in the past by empty promises by manufacturers. Don't buy something based on updates it might receive. If it doesn't meet all your needs at the moment you're buying something, don't buy it.
Nikon could just as easily not provide that update and when they launch the Mark II version of these bodies say "Hey, we now offer CF Express!! Awesome right?".

The support of CF express in Z7 is a feature that Nikon advertise officially (it is in the brochure etc.) so I don't think they can take back their promise.

Good to know it's in their brochure. I guess I'll buy the lowest capacity XQD card and get a CFE later (if I decide to go for the Z6/Z7).

The key issue is whether or not the data transfer speed will be high enough to support continuous shooting. The Z cameras brochure does mention CFExpress but makes no comment on data transfer speeds.

If you add the MB-D18 to your D850 then it can use the D4s battery. I run a similar pairing of D500/D4. That a battery grip is currently unavailable for the Z—and won't attach in standard Nikon DSLR fashion regardless—is a serious problem for intensive uses. More so given the Z's hunger for energy.

I can't see how having a CFEx card in there is going to help these cameras out one bit....there is something totally flawed in the internal pipeline and not in the XQD card speed that is bottlenecking these cameras....just look at the data Nikon can flow through to a XQD card even at 9FPS on the D850.....XQD is plenty fast for these cameras and it is internally where the issue is in getting a decent buffer. Putting an even faster CFEx card in isn't going to help buffer/FPS until Nikon releases another version of the Z camera with better internal pipeline.....at least that is how I see it going.....why Nikon bothered with a XQD in these first two cameras is beyond me anyways as none of the specs require that speed of card....and obviously Nikon didn't design the camera to take advantage of the card speed anyways like they did in their DSLR cameras (where the D500/850 and D5 all use it to have a competitive advantage).
p.6 #18 · Official Z Series Camera and Lens Discussion
It all depends how exactly Nikon decided to implement CFExpress in Z6/Z7. Since they made quite strong claims about CFExpress readiness I expect the architecture is ready for CFExpress speeds rather than just prepared to being upgraded with CFExpress compatibility at XQD 2.0 signalling speeds.
If they've done it right (2x PCIE 3.0 lanes and fast enough DDR speed) then we should see a significant effective buffer upgrade if not unlimited burst shooting once CFExpress launches.

The D850 buffer fills after 20 frames when writing 14 bit raw as the write pipeline cannot keep up with the data generated. CFExpress allows a faster write speed, the question is whether or not the Z cameras will be able to take advantage of it.

As someone else said, don't make a purchase decision based on a promised but not yet available feature.
Yes the D850 does slow down after 20 frames in 14 bit losless but the exposure is not lock after the first frame. If you don't lock exposure after the first frame, the Z7 will slow down to 5.5 fps. At 9fps the z7 doesn't show real time preview in the evf, it skip a frames. For real time preview you have to go down to 5.5 fps.
