I am in the same boat but for a different reason. The A7 MK1 or MK2 only needed better AF, Leica SL EVF specs and touch focus. Launching an R version first may show the world what theyre capable of and take the steam out of D850, but A7III launch should create a more even excitement because its more what most Photogs need and could afford..

Its about time Sony release medium and small size RAW,many want the latitude of RAW but not the full resolution..

So, *perfection* would have been the ability to adjust the size of the RAW file, perhaps? Would shooting in APS-C mode do that? I think I've read that its 18MP...so...just wondering.

I wonder why they are removing the apps from the latest generation of cameras? Is it because the A9 and A7R3 are viewed a "professional" cameras and having apps makes them appear geared towards the iphone crowd? Is there a limitation in the new cameras of some sort?

I'd put my money on the latter - the new hardware in the A9/A7RIII requires a new operating system, and there's been some problem porting the app framework to it.

Sony don't seem to have any problems putting "iphone" features in "professional" cameras.

when doing super long bulb shots like from a 16 stop ND, often, you're better off with a 6/10stop + SR. Reason, is if you mess up and get exposure calculation wrong for a 5 minute shot, retaking that shot is a hassle. When taking exposures that long, sometimes the sun behind the cloud, could come out and ruin your exposure, but with SR, you can stop prematurely if needed. if travelling, you may not have big filters around, so that's an added plus.

I have a full set of filters when I go shooting and at the same time,

As great as the ND filters are today, adding another plastic/optical glass in front of our expensive lenses will always shift colors, increase flare and rob a little resolution. True, the best filters will have minimal side-effects but since we are trying to create a ND effect (blur sky, water), doing it in software was just so convenient. (and cheap)

I agree that most of the Sony Apps were gimmicks and Pros were right to criticize them. I'm only taking about a couple of very useful apps here. Sony should make them part of the menu system instead!

Image averaging (SR) and intervalometer.

Perhaps they don’t realize just how good the smooth reflection app is! Perhaps we all need to tell them. I can see not wanting/needing on an action/wildlife cam but on a camera geared for landscape as much as anything, it will be missed. I guess I’ll have to invest more heavily into filters. It also affects the lenses I buy and use if I have to think about ND filters.

I lost count of the many complaints about Sony apps I've read across the various forums. ( I know some of these apps are better than others). But I always thought it was a great idea to allow customers to pick and chose how they customize their cameras with these apps or not.

After using B+W filters and thinking about filter size when buying lenses, it was such a relief trying the NiSi filter system with 100x100 mm IRND filters. The lack of color tint is just another world and various sizes work like a charm with adapter rings.

Yes, but when I’m traveling for my day job or just didn’t bring ND filters, the smooth reflection is always there and ready for the surprise image opportunities. Then it’s just deciding how many frames I want the camera to average. And, there’s no tint to worry about!

Many photographers complained about the apps but didn't want them removed entirely ; they wanted the interface improved.

The interface was clunky, didn't carry over your settings, painfully slow, payments did not work well, an app really had to be go to use it because just attempting to use an app was a painful process.
They clearly invested a decent amount of money on the app concept so getting rid of it overnight without a word is very strange.
Communication has never been Sony's strong suit. You would think leaking a couple of thoughts to an influencer would be a simple process and better than leaving everyone in the dark.
This user is hoping they are just reworking it to make it better and will bring it back on the A9 / A7riii at some point via firmware update.

For some reason I thought the D3X was before the A900, but it seems the A900 was in fact announced a few months earlier, so Sony very briefly held the FF sensor resolution record.

They should make these apps for your mobile device and use a micro cable for use connected to the camera. Eliminates all Bluetooth and WiFi stuff when your in remote locations. Make the apps take control of your camera. This is already being done tethered to your laptop via C1 I can control many functions of camera now just add apps we can buy via iTunes. Problem solved

Agreed. But we need someone with connections to Sony to tell them, talking about it here won’t help us much.

Anybody have any connections to some of those Sony Artisan folks maybe

It would be great if a third party software could build the pixel shifted image for better color output and at the same time, average the four images using a mean stack for improved signal to noise ratio. Two birds, one stone.

What you get (in terms of raw data) when you use the pixel shift function is an image where you have 4 values per pixel, one red, one green, one blue, and one more green.

If you tried to median stack the 4 images as you would be taking the median of a red value, two green values and a blue value. It would make no sense.

Your only choice is how you deal with the two green values you have for each pixel. Even though median filtering is better at rejecting noise than calculating the mean, when you only have two values the mean and median are identical.

So there's not a lot of choice over how you process a pixel shift image. The only clever thing you can do is use the green values to try and identify objects that may have moved, of course it can only identify movement in objects that reflect at least some green(ish) light.

Looks like this effort to communicate has been underway for some time. Not sure if this is still active or even still underway but Brian Smith is pretty easy to reach out to.

AF tracking doesn't work so well. Certainly nothing like the A9. Just watch dancers from 1:05.

dolina wrote:
The camera is clearly in Expand Flex Spot Small mode in that part of the clip. The dancers just leave and enter the small AF area, that part of clip tells nothing about tracking.

I noticed the camera was also in AF-A mode.

Fred, I agree --
I work for a big Sony Playstation game developer so naturally I was a fan of the app strategy and I felt like Sony could have really taken it somewhere! They should build on them with more Playstation Network (social) integration and enhanced security.

One thing I am definitely missing is the ability to control the focus motors like you can with Canon Utilities, Camranger, Promote, and the new D850 system. I can do a stacked macro or landscape much easier with such tools. Anybody seen anything like that for Sony?

Thank you! If the A7RIII offers significantly improved AF performance with the TAP and TA-GA3, I'll need to use this persuasive economic analysis when presenting my case to the Department. Have you already received approval from the Central Committee?

The CC has demanded some asset liquidation as part of the next Five Year Plan, but subject to that, ordering is approved.
