Sony's competitive advantage lies in making high speed sensors, not in pushing the megapixel count up. If you look back Sony have at no point been the leader in resolution (the A7R came out after the D800, the A7RII came out after the 5Ds)...

You probably didn't look bar far enough See: https://www.dpreview.com/products/sony/slrs/sony_dslra900 which was the first full frame to have a 24MP sensor, and all the way back in 2008!

Having said that, I agree with your point that it makes more sense for Sony to invest in higher speed sensors than higher resolution ones right now as we are in diminishing returns on the latter. I think Sony have found a great balance between sensitivity, speed and resolution with their 42MP sensors. However with them being ~2 years old I won't be surprised if they release something higher res in the next year or so...

Does anyone have any insight into WHY Sony is dropping support for apps on new cameras?

Well I sought of understood why they may have thought they didn't need to include them on the A9 but it just seems to be plainly 'silly' not to have them on the A7rIII. one of the reasons why I will keep one of my A7rII bodies is to be able to use the smooth reflections app.

I think for many of us the A7RII was such a massive leap, as was the A9. I must admit, I don't feel like the A7RIII has that same, "Holy COW!" draw to it as an A7RII owner, but I've no doubt the improvements will be pretty noticeable. The AF joystick, touch screen, improved viewfinder, faster AF, more frames per/sec and who couldn't use an extra stop of dynamic range, better IBS and better battery performance? As a dedicated landscape photographer, I get the impression the pixel shift piece may be viable for me in certain situations, but I

Not all upgrades are tech related. Sometimes better means improved functions.
I think the a7RIII is a functional improvement, which translates into working environments more so than spec sheets.

Improved Eye-AF, battery life, dual slots, continuous silent shooting. USB 3.1 tethering, WiFi to Computer FTP. These are all improvements that makes working with this camera in the field a tool, and not just a great photo taker. Working pros like myself were waiting on these improvements and I immediately hit the pre-order button. Never bought an a7RII because it lacked many of the above features.

One of the Sony Artistians speaks about editing the raws from the AR3. She says you can clearly see the DR difference in the shadows:

They have to leave that for the 7rII otherwise the price will plummet even further. It will come to the 7rIII after some time, especially if its sale picks up.

If I had to guess I'd say it's because the apps weren't generating enough additional revenue to justify the ongoing development and support costs.

It's definitely one of the pluses of having a Sony A7R II.

I'm going to miss the Smooth Reflections and TimeLapse apps dearly. They were part of my workflow when shooting landscapes and the results are outstanding. Sony probably got bad advise and feedback from reviewers or photographer who never really tested or used these apps. Removing this feature is a huge downside for me and it made me think twice about getting the new A7RIII. I'm sure I'm not alone here. Even Canon offers a 'light' version of image averaging in-camera. (Up to 9 images)

Security could be one of the reasons they killed the apps project and I don't think any new camera will offer this feature any longer.

There are ways to do image averaging in post-production but it's time consuming. It was much easier getting this done in-camera...

Fred, don't you think that this "decision" could be reversed by a firmware upgrade, should Sony get enough pushback from meaningful users?

You're averaging two green samples for every pixel, so noise in the green channel will be reduced slightly, hence DR will increase (slightly).

Yes, I take their "15 stops" as a relative number - thus whatever they stated for the A7RII for DR is now improved upon by the A7RIII.

But they didn't state anything for the A7RII - that's the whole problem!

I'm sure it would be possible but I'm not hopeful Sony would reverse this by the way they treated the 'star eater issue'. Also, many thought this would happen for the A9 and it didn't.

Could be security, could be financial, could be technical (like memory limitations, etc.). Who knows. I only was able to get the wireless remote control working and it was clunky at best.

I hope they have a much more open tethered solution that allows full access to camera operation so that I can connect my Android tablet via USB like I can with my D800.

Just preordered the 7riii at B&H. Salesman told me they have over 3000 preorders. Told me lots of new people are shifting over from Canon and Nikon.

From what I understand ( can't remember which interview posted with this info), according to Sony, Pros are not interested/asking for Sony apps so Sony did not include apps in the A9. Looks like they may have taken the same approach for the A7rIII.

Perhaps they don’t realize just how good the smooth reflection app is! Perhaps we all need to tell them. I can see not wanting/needing on an action/wildlife cam but on a camera geared for landscape as much as anything, it will be missed. I guess I’ll have to invest more heavily into filters. It also affects the lenses I buy and use if I have to think about ND filters.

Wow. I ordered at Amazon at least for now but I was tracking the site and I actually think I’m in the top 10. It was all of a sudden live

I honestly never used the apps myself. I use ND filters

After using B+W filters and thinking about filter size when buying lenses, it was such a relief trying the NiSi filter system with 100x100 mm IRND filters. The lack of color tint is just another world and various sizes work like a charm with adapter rings.

when doing super long bulb shots like from a 16 stop ND, often, you're better off with a 6/10stop + SR. Reason, is if you mess up and get exposure calculation wrong for a 5 minute shot, retaking that shot is a hassle. When taking exposures that long, sometimes the sun behind the cloud, could come out and ruin your exposure, but with SR, you can stop prematurely if needed. if travelling, you may not have big filters around, so that's an added plus.

I have a full set of filters when I go shooting and at the same time, I wont hesitate to use SR when it warrants. No hotspots from ultra long exposures, and super clean images. Really fantastic tool
