If I had to guess I'd say it's because the apps weren't generating enough additional revenue to justify the ongoing development and support costs.

From what I understand ( can't remember which interview posted with this info), according to Sony, Pros are not interested/asking for Sony apps so Sony did not include apps in the A9. Looks like the same approach for the A7rIII.

Perhaps they don’t realize just how good the smooth reflection app is! Perhaps we all need to tell them. I can see not wanting/needing on an action/wildlife cam but on a camera geared for landscape as much as anything, it will be missed. I guess I’ll have to invest more heavily into filters. It also affects the lenses I buy and use if I have to think about ND filters.

I honestly never used the apps myself. I use ND filters

when doing super long bulb shots like from a 16 stop ND, often, you're better off with a 6/10stop + SR. Reason, is if you mess up and get exposure calculation wrong for a 5 minute shot, retaking that shot is a hassle. When taking exposures that long, sometimes the sun behind the cloud, could come out and ruin your exposure, but with SR, you can stop prematurely if needed. if travelling, you may not have big filters around, so that's an added plus.

I have a full set of filters when I go shooting and at the same time, I wont hesitate to use SR when it warrants. No hotspots from ultra long exposures, and super clean images. Really fantastic tool

As great as the ND filters are today, adding another plastic/optical glass in front of our expensive lens will always shift colors, increase flare and rob a little resolution. True, the best filters will have minimal side-effects but since we are trying to create a ND effect (blur sky, water), doing it in software was just so convenient. (and cheap)

I agree that most of the Sony Apps were gimmicks and Pros were right to criticize them. I'm only taking about a couple of very useful apps here. Sony should make them part of the menu system instead!

Image averaging (SR) and intervalometer.

Agreed. But we need someone with connections to Sony to tell them, talking about it here won’t help us much.

Anybody have any connections to some of those Sony Artisan folks maybe

Looks like this effort to cummunicate has been underway for some time. Not sure if this is still active or even still underway but Brian Smith is pretty easy to reach out to.
