Depends what you shoot. 72 RAW's isn't bad but that's only a 4.5 - 5 second burst at max 1DX II FPS. A 10 frame burst isn't even 1 second of shooting, and it's quite common to need more than that. If you're trying to nail very specific poses in a long sequence of say, an athlete or running animal, you are going to hit that cap pretty quickly. The solution is to use only a single card slot or forego any kind of backup, which is pretty risky IMHO.

Sure, I can see that. I suppose it comes down to shooting styles. For me, I prefer to time my bursts, and they are really quick generally. I know people that fire off big bursts to catch, for example, a bat-on-ball shot. Me, its a single shot and I have just as much a chance of catching it as I do with a big burst. Some of my old school habits remain from all film days when we had to be a bit more careful.

I get that some people will want more buffer, but for me, I'll be thrilled with 72 raw frames. I suspect it's double that or more for JPEG.

Cheers

JPEG has unlimited buffer....shoot till card is full.....

I agree, that is the biggest disadvantage of having one fast and one slow card slot - the huge buffers these days seem to be very dependent on the fastest card technology to get there. No more card backup unless you want to cut your buffer way, way, down. If you want a huge buffer you have to roll the dice with one card - not great for a pro camera.

For my type of shooting 73 shots will be more than enough. I've almost never hit the 1DX's 45 shot buffer and only occasionally hit the 7D2's 30 or so shot buffer. Usually the only time I hit the buffer is during a duck's takeoff while shooting from my kayak as I spin around trying to track the damn thing as it zips past. That is my most "spray and prey" scenario. For all other wildlife and even BIF shooting I will rarely fire more than 10 shots at a time.

There may be some that need 170 but I'm not one of them. I think the only reason the CFast is really there is for the 4K video folks. That codec is passing 800Mbps or 5733 MB/min of data at 4K 60.

Agree - I think for many users, a ~4 second buffer will be more than enough. Would be nice to have the option for a huge buffer without caveats though. Some shooters will be limited by 72 shots for sure, unless they forego a backup or are OK with cycling cards through a single shot all day. It might be something Canon changes down the road.

I would think you can probably configure the camera to shoot raw to the fast card and jog to the slow one?

It would be interesting to see what the buffer becomes in such cases.

Ths isn't perfect of course, but it may be an acceptable workaround.

Cheers,
Bernard

Funny, not too long ago (depends how old you are), 72 frames was two rolls of film and the cameras operated at ~6 fps. One fear was always a big play happening at frame 30ish.

I agree - even with 14fps, bat on ball will still require timing, skill and luck. A fastball moves pretty far in 1/14 second. Or a golf club. However, as suggested in the other 1DXII thread, here's where 60fps (then 120, then 240, etc., etc.) frame grabs will eventually find a purpose. 4K is equivalent to 2004 stills resolution. I wonder how long it will take for these cameras to bump up to 5K and 6K?

Totally off topic... but at first I thought it's 14FPS, how far apart could a fastball possibly be between shots? But then I did some quick math, and I was amazed how right you are...

If a fastball is going 96mph, then it's travelling 1.6 miles per minute. If it's travelling 1.6MPM, then it's travelling 8448 feet per minute. If it's travelling 8448 FPM, then it's travelling ~141 feet per second, which means a fastball travels almost 10 feet between every frame on a 14 FPS camera! (I know I'm a math geek, but that blew my mind).

Even more respect to sports photographers...

And 2.35 feet every 1/60. Which leads me to think 60fps is not a guarantee, though the chances are better. Thanks for doing the calculations!

I think in that case the buffer would be at 170 RAW onto the CFast and the CF card with jpegs would be limited by the CFast buffer. With only jpegs there is no buffer limit.

Theres some more math to figure the probability of starting your 60fps burst at the right time to get it right, but I'm too lazy right now to even start figuring that one out.

It's all about time and skill aquire through practice. Watch the pitcher, time the impact.

If the situation allows, you can also use certain apps, such as Photo Mechanic (not sure about Adobe products) to extract the embedded full-rez Jpeg from each CR2 file. Granted, those Jpegs are quite highly compressed (I think averaging around 2MB from the 1DX), but it would save the hassle of splitting file types across cards. I can see where there are specific applications where you want Jpegs directly from the camera. But if you have time to chimp your images on the rear display, then you can also take a few seconds to have the camera output your selected CR2 as a Jpeg, since the 1DXII supports in-camera RAW conversion.

From my experience with 1DX CR2s run through Photo Mechanic for Jpeg extraction, 1000-2000 files only take a minute or two with a lowly MacBook Air. And that's not even after downloading the CR2s to the computer's SSD, rather directly off the card.

Generally with video you want to start the clip early, so it's really IMO complete chance as far as nailing precise ball on bat. I don't know how you could calculate a start time that is meaningful to the human behind the camera. The way I look at it is if you're going to go the frame grab direction, it's like spray and pray, just 5-6X finer resolution between frames, so you're playing the odds, which seem better than 12 fps where timing is a lot more critical.

I guess a reason current TV replays from the regular camera feeds seem to show the moment of contact is because of the much slower shutter speed required for fluid ~30fps, during which the ball becomes a much larger object (streak) in the image.

Even with two of the same type cards, the number of frames buffered can be smaller. For example two CF cards in the 1DX in write to both mode results in a far smaller buffer. I suppose if two CFast cards reduced the buffer to ~100 frames, few would complain. I was hitting the buffer too much in the 1DX with write to both mode so I went back to having the cards in rollover mode.

Agreed, I will keep both eyes open, one in the viewfinder to make sure I don't lose framing, and one on the pitcher. At the time the pitcher throws the ball, I will start a 4-6 frame burst right before the ball reaches home plate.

Well with the big buffer you would ensure to start shooting just before the action will be critical and you won't have to worry about buffer overflow (CFast)

This camera is a bit of a yawn for me.

The 1D series is about speed, AF and solid build. I guess they have checked those boxes on this edition (DPR seems to be a bit dubious about the AF though) but in the end a slight increase in FPS and a few video features hardly makes me reach for the checkbook.

I think we will have wait till Photokina to be astonished by something. Of course it can't have mad FPS because then this camera would have no reason for existing.

Personally I'd much rather have WiFi over GPS...so nice to be in a warm sleeping bag/tent while the camera works in the cold and I remote from the warm via a Droid.

You can already have this with the Camranger. If you don't need 14fps then you can just slap it on to a 5Dmk2 or 3. Nice big iPad image while you use your phone to order pizza.

What exactly are DPR dubious about? Let me guess, it's not a Sony and will actually deliver on it's AF hype.

No matter what camera is released some people will find it a yawn. If this is a yawn then I guess the current 1DX must be soporific. Clearly this is not the camera you have been looking for and was never going to be.

To a degree the 1D X to 1D X II evolution seems (somewhat) analogous to the 5D2 to 5D3. With bated breath we await the 5D4 and 1D X III.
