Sometimes I think Nikon/Sony have paid shills on this board now. And I wish one person could show me one photo where the \'reduced DR\' made any shot that was properly made, unusable. This whole DR topic could be a clever ploy by the competition to try and scare away the ignorant and the gullible. I\'m not disputing the science behind the argument - I\'m disputing the argument itself.

I used to shoot a lot of HDR images (multiple exposures taken at different shutter speeds, blended together tastefully, not tonemapped to death in Photomatix). I even bought a 1D mkIV so I could shoot at 10fps to reduce the problem of movement between shots. It was a lot of extra effort but I felt it was worth it.

I appreciate many people don\'t feel at all constricted by the dynamic range available from their Canon sensors. And why would they - everyone is used to the fact you can\'t just whack the sliders all the way up to 100 or take a massively underexposed shot and expect to produce something good from it.

Last year I decided to supplement my collection of Canon DSLRs with a Sony A7R, for reasons of size, resolution, and DR. After shooting with it for a year I\'ll admit most of the time I don\'t notice a big difference, but every now and then I something during RAW conversion, like whack the shadows slider all the way up on a whim, expecting to see a mess and instead I just get something that just looks like the rest of the photo. And then I\'m like \"oh yeah I forgot, I have a Sony sensor now, I don\'t have to be conservative when processing RAWs!\"

It has genuinely caused me to say \"wow!\" on a few occasions. That\'s what I expect from an investment of thousands. I don\'t exposure bracket shots any more, sold the 1D mkIV.

It\'s not about shots being \"unusable\", or \"impossible\" without extended DR, it just increases your options and makes shooting and editing nicer. Until you\'ve experienced it for a while I would hold off on dismissing the advantages.

I am very pleased Canon now has a high resolution offering, I hope the people putting in preorders are happy with it, but I wont buy another Canon [camera] until they can offer what I\'ve now come to expect from Sony sensors, especially in a body that is otherwise heavily tailored to travel and landscape photography.
