I think for a lot of people the only thing the 5D3 has to offer is being new.
But there are some features on there some would love. For instance nothing about the 5D3 intrigues me other than the dual slots. Specifically having an SD slot, as I work from the field and it's easier to just slide an SD card into my laptop than try to remember to bring a reader.
Other features are interesting, like a clean ISO 25,000 or the faster more sensitive autofocus. But all that added up there just really isn't any benefit to get a 5D3 over the 5D2. I've only shot over ISO6400 twice. And I totally ignore AF points and just use the center and recompose. It's how I worked with manual lenses in the past, I'm just used to it.

I agree, there you go . Even worse, the 1Ds Mark III of 21MP now got "downgraded" to 18MP in the form of a merged body, the 1DX. Another reason for you to sell your Canon gear... .
I look at it differently. 1dsMKIII now 22mp up 1 mp and 61 focus points (5dmklll) and cheaper
and
1dmkIV now full frame up 2mp and up 2 fps (1dx)
The dollar sucks as a currency, compared to the Yen we've lost 20% in the last four years alone, this accounts for a pretty big chunk of these price "increases"

The price is about right. I paid $3,499 for the original 5D. The 5D Mark II was actually a surprise as far as price, I think the new AF and the extra 3fps, plus the dual card slots are worth the extra money.
Compared to the 5D, the 5D III for a $100 more is a steal. 5D was essentially a FF sensor in a rebel class body. Looking at it's specs now, they are woeful. Of course back then FF sensors were still much more expensive to make.

But that's kind of a meaningless comparison, isn't it? You couldn't buy a 5D III at the time 5D retailed for $3400, so all it really underscores is where the technology has come in the last 5 years.
The more relevant comparison is how the camera prices out (1) in the context of the rest of Canon's current lineup, and how it compares to its competition. On paper, at least, the camera seems to be in a position of distinct disadvantage as compared to its competitors.
The 5DIII ain't cheap, with the grip it will come to $4,000 + sales tax where applicable, which is a pile of money, however, this is the first prosumer dSLR by Canon which emulates the new 1D specs quite nicely. Therefore, I can see why Canon would set its introductory price to $3,500.
OK, it's "only" 6 FPS, but unless you are into fast sports or fast wildlife action, your results will probably not suffer much by not having 8 or 10 FPS.
Furthermore, 5DMkIII can not AF at f/8, but no Canon prosumer dSLR ever could. Besides, very few people use f/8 combo anyways, so that "deficiency" is largely irrelevant in the big market picture. However, if f/8 is crucial to your photography, then you may wish to turn your energies and attention to cameras like 1DsMkIII, 1DMkIV etc. It's not like you've got no other options left.
If you do not require a state of the art AF system, then why on earth don't you keep your 5D MkII ? Why even concern yourself with a camera such as 5DIII which would cause you to pay big bucks for features you do not require ?
5DMkIII doesn't have enough Mp for you ? That must be really tough having to compromise on a puny 22 MP body. However, not the end of the world either......there is Nikon D800, Pentax 645, etc.....lottsa options again available to you.
a) Did you think it would be cheaper? You're crazy.
b) If you think this camera competes with the D800, it doesn't. It rocks its AF, has 1.5 the shutter speed, better noise performance, less megapixels. It's essentially a perfect wedding/photoj camera, it's good enough for sports. For what I shoot it kills the D800, I was thinking of switching beforehand.
I have absolutely no desire for more resolution. Nor does any sports/news photographer I know, that's why you don't see it in the D4 or the 1D X, or the 5Diii. Nikon has clearly chosen to differentiate it's d800, I expect Canon to come out with a 4500 dollar high MP 2k camera or something like that.

Well Peter, there have always been options for a lower mpix good AF camera...and today there is a shit load of them. However, for us landscape folks that can make use of extra pixels, we are left having to look outside of Canon.

I typically shoot on a tripod at ISO 100 and manual focus. So for me, what the heck is so appealing about the 5DIII at $3500?
Are you really going to fault someone for having different shooting needs than you do?
Yes this camera is obviously not for you. But then you have to buy another body that will fit your needs. It's not like Canon should change this camera so it will fit you

What is the point of the price?
Point is Canon offers a pro 1D X at 6.800. And a new pro 5D III at half price. Great, isnīt it? For both cameras there is no competitor in the market. Nikon just offers a D4 at 2MP, 2FPS, 2 stops in hign ISO less at a couple of hundreds $ less? And a no competitor at 14MP more for MP freaks (at old aged IQ) that do not have customers. What is the problem here? Canon just announced the two No 1 cameras of the world market. Without competitors. So they can dictate the price. We (customers) will accept. Else it will go down. Its just that easy.
The cost of this gear in production will NEVER overcom $ 750 a unit. The rest is money for marketing, subsideries, distribution, resale etc. etc. profit, profit, profit.
Why not? If it helps me to generate profit for myself ... should I say "NO"!
I have to pay the same for Greece not going down the line the next two month. Without having a chance to choose. Or changing anything. I prefere to purchase a 5D III!

Dawei i seriously think you need to re-asses what you think is good value in a camera.
just on ten years ago i spend 2200 on a 10D...6MP 4 or so FPS 1.6 crop barely any buffer.
Today 3500 buys 22MP. 6FPS. Stellar IQ. Brilliant AF. Weather sealing. HD video..on and on and on.
Its a steal not a rip off..
You can argue about a rip-ooff, but a steal? come on. It's $800 more 3.5 years later. Does it have new features, yes? But it's 3.5 years later it had better have something new after that time. D800 has at least as much new and is $500 less. Was the 50D $800 more than the 20D? No, it actually cost less.

Not for long! 3500$ is an introduction price, just to make waiting lists for early adopters not too long. But I predict competition will force Canon to lower it's price rapidly. If you decide to wait, it's gonna save you and most probably you'll gonna see some competive alternatives in the meantime. Photokina september 18-23 has some nice promises. In the meantime those of you who decide the mkIII is your next camera, enjoy and have EOSfun. It's a great package that you'll enjoy from day 1, but don't expect it to stay for the next three years on top of it's segment and save some money for a replacement sooner than you did for the replacement of mkII....Show more →
I wonder what falls faster, the price on the 5D3 or the price a used 5D2 could be sold for....
If you wait for the 5D3 to fall $500 does the 5D2 price you can sell it for fall $200 or $800?
