3500$ for the 5D3 ??...... the new features aren't worth 1500$ more than the 5d2 for me, I"m still going to use center focus point, I"m still going to shoot ISO 100-3200. I'd rather buy a new lens for the 1500$. THAT is really going to improve my photography
I can stone cold guarrantee you the MK2 was way more than 2000 at launch. Why compare price on a brand new state of the art camera with way more capability with one now 3-4 years old at the end of its tech cycle.

Keep in mind that 5D Mark II was $2699 at launch. $800 cheaper than Mark III.

$3500 is a rip off, but IF (and a big IF):
- the IQ is much better
- the AF is competent
I'd buy it in a heart beat
I'd pay $1500 just for the AF microadjust software that Canon has.
It's not so much $, but features per $ that matters for me.
Dawei i seriously think you need to re-asses what you think is good value in a camera.
just on ten years ago i spend 2200 on a 10D...6MP 4 or so FPS 1.6 crop barely any buffer.
Today 3500 buys 22MP. 6FPS. Stellar IQ. Brilliant AF. Weather sealing. HD video..on and on and on.
Its a steal not a rip off..
Not for long! 3500$ is an introduction price, just to make waiting lists for early adopters not too long. But I predict competition will force Canon to lower it's price rapidly. If you decide to wait, it's gonna save you and most probably you'll gonna see some competive alternatives in the meantime. Photokina september 18-23 has some nice promises. In the meantime those of you who decide the mkIII is your next camera, enjoy and have EOSfun. It's a great package that you'll enjoy from day 1, but don't expect it to stay for the next three years on top of it's segment and save some money for a replacement sooner than you did for the replacement of mkII.

Unless the things are in short supply, either due to demand or artificially by canon throttling supply to just under demand . thus MSRP (or over) is what customers will have to pay.
the throttling of supply happens quite a bit now in many areas of consumer retail.
By the way remember how long it took for the 5D2 to become a general stock item.
I hope it does come down in price. As said it is £3,000 here in the UK, where the D800 is £2,399. I'm also going to be keeping an eye on the 1Ds3 second hand prices, but can't see those dropping too soon with the price difference...

$3.5k DONT COMPLAIN TO LOUD !!!!
Its £3k which is the equivalent of $4768 here in the UK
Doesnt it make you sick? Friend of mine works in Jessops. He sent me a text earlier saying it was £3k. I thought he was having laugh at my expense. (Now he keeps sending me texts saying "so... going darkside then?!!" easy for him.. he's ordered a D4 for £4200... which he hasnt seen yet )
Turns out its Canon UK having the laugh. I was going to head into Jacobs Digital tomorrow to pre-order if it had been +-£2400. Oh well
When was the 5D II $2000 at launch; never that's when. Comparing just about to be superseded price to new price is ludicrous. Yes I think price should be $2999, but given the massive drop in dollar since 5D II was released and this is a much better camera IMO, and the fact I think price will quickly drop I'm not too upset. UK price is an ambit claim, and will drop fast too IMO. Hell even is Australia price has been set the same as US price for the first time in history.
For us with a 5D2 it will be interesting to see how much better the IQ will be...
Yes AF is better (sans f:8), Yes slightly lower noise... still I am quite satisfied with the output from the 5D2. It's not that I will be able to shoot those magical pictures I have had wet dreams of ever since I got the 5D2...
Positioning the new 5D3 with given specs, open up for at least two more FF cameras, one with lesser features i.e. a "modern" lower cost 5D2 and a high MP 5D-XL. Not sure we will see a 1Ds4 if the 5Dnew is rugged enough..
My guess is Canon will bring out the 5D-XL later this year, and Nikon will come with a 20+ MP camera for those who cannot cope with 75 megabyte files that D800 generates.

Taking the UK pre-order price into account the USA/AUS price is an absolute bargain and you can even get a lens thrown in too for less money than in the UK
I hope you're right about the price dropping quickly. I suspect the price is over-inflated because they believe demand will be high. Not at that price. Someone I know who uses a 5Dmk2 to shoot video commercially put the 5Dmk3 price into perspective. The C300 will be £10k, so for videographers the 5Dmk3 is a bargain.
