p.6 #1 · Steve Jobs passed away earlier today

Well several Apple products have built-in cameras. Apple produces several applications for editing photographs and video footage. And of course Apple designs and manufacturers one of the very best hardware platforms to edit, manage, share, store, and display your photography on.

Umm, I'd say Apple is more relevant to modern photography than any other single company on the planet. That one of the designers / mascots / banner carriers / vision leaders, died is pretty relevant to probably most users found in a "camera forum".

Wouldn't you say so?

EDIT: I see Tariq and I stepped on each other... Sorry about that!

Sad day.
Sincere condolences to his family and to all his followers.
Could more people read Steve Jobs' (best) biographies in order to understand why and where he was different, why he was a true visionary.
Rest in peace, Mister Jobs.

Clearly this topic has noting to do with the iPhone or the iPad. That's not what I intended and that's not how most members viewed it.

I would posit that 50%+ of Canon digital photographers process their images on Apple computers so I think it's a very relevant topic personally. And I think most people of the forum do too - 1400 people read this topic so far. Many posted heart felt sentiment. Three people including yourself didn't like it. I believe that most people on this forum thought that it was very relevant. This topic is aimed at Canon

Didn't say it was about iPhones...(you know they are apple products though, right?).

I feel bad that the guy passed, it sucks for him and everyone around him.

I just don't feel that this is the place for it, regardless of whether or not you process your images on a mac, or a pc.

We have a forum for this topic. Not turning it into a heated exchange.

I really don't think that the operating system is going to have any problems. The poor guy has been sick for awhile (and it's sort of selfish to worry about the operating system when the guy was dying for crying out loud).

I don't get what's so hard to comprehend about that. Perhaps it's a mac thing.

No, but what do I know. I only ever used an old Mac for database stuff. As far as my photography is concerned, Apple hardly exists.

I agree that Mac as a computing platform has been very relevant historically for DTP and all that. Perhaps a bit less so today.

The man has changed many aspects of many people's lives.
For that alone, I think his passing away is a notable event for many people.

RIP....

I've never owned or driven a BMW. I suppose that means BMW is not relevant in the car world either??

If BMW would disappear now, it wouldn't affect me. Maybe indirectly in the future, but not in a direct way.

I believe that I can buy and use most photography related software and hardware without any kind of reliance on Apple. Aperture and Raw Photo Processor are the only exceptions that I can think of.

Whether you liked him or not, whether he was a bastard or not, he helped drag the computer world(with class) to be a lot more accessible for ordinary people like me,so Vail........ Mr.Jobs.

Small minded I would guess. The Steves (Jobs and Woz) brought the graphical interface to millions of people. Ever use Photoshop? The symbotic relationship between Apple and Adobe was intrumental in the success of both. Ever watch a Pixar movie? Ever use Windows? If it weren't for Jobs you'd still be using DOS.

Just an expression obviously, loosen up!

Jobs was a genius/ visionary in taking the inventions of others, integrating them and making this accessible to everyone. He was also as much a marketing genius as anything else.

That's what he did with PARC's GUI and the personal computer...and pretty much everything else that Apple came out with.

This thread demonstrates, in many ways, the worst tendencies of photography forum threads. (And, yes, I cannot say that I've never been guilty of the same behavior.)

Let's say that you think the original post was off-topic, OK? You can make a very strong case that your position is logically correct. Let's go ahead and stipulate that you are correct and that, indeed, your sense of order and logic has been violated.

But we're talking about the premature death of a person whose influence has arguably been greater than that of the vast majority of people in this world. It is - and I hope that you can go ahead and stipulate this - something that, in fact, has affected many people deeply.

While I would normally join most of you in resisting subjects that are off topic, how about a bit of discretion and good taste and patience this time - instead of getting into the "mac thing" business? There will again be a time and a place for that, no doubt, but it is not now and it is not here. For now, as people reasonably mourn the death of a person who they feel deeply about - whether you do or not - please just let it go. Keep your anger and your negative opinions to yourself for a few days and just try a bit of tolerance.

I never met him directly but I had the good fortune to work somewhat closely with people who did occasionally work directly with him, and I heard my share of "Steve stories" from these people. In most cases, the stories served to portray a person who was brilliant, driven, visionary, and sometimes quite impatient. I've been fortunate to encounter a number of people of great artistic and other talent during my life, and in Jobs I recognize a person with the same sort of mind that characterizes many of them, particularly the artists. (I'm thinking of certain musicians and a few photographers right now.) He had a vision of how things could be, he understood things (in this case the things included design, how people interact with technology, marketing, and this complicated thing called "quality") in a deep way that cannot be taught, he seemed to "just know" when a thing was right, and he seemed utterly dedicated to his vision of how things could be different and better. These characteristics do not always make a person easy to get along with or agreeable, but they often are part of the package when it comes to brilliant and creative minds.

Thanks,

Dan

You tried to belittle the topic by Framing it as being about how bad the iPhone is when the topic is not about the iPhone. Please go back and re-read your own post.

If it is so critical we not bring up Apple and Jobs on the Canon forum than why on the very front page of the Canon forum are you in a dialog on another topic about Adobe Lightroom? That's a bit hypocritical. Maybe you just hate your iPhone or you have some other motivation.

You stated your case already - you don't think it is appropriate and it belongs in another forum. The only other forum suggested was the "Alternative Gear and Lenses" forum and I explained clearly the history of that forum and why posting it there is no more or less appropriate than posting this in the Canon forum.

I've stated my case. I've been here since 2004 and think there is not any historical precedent on FM for saying this forum has to discuss nothing besides a specific Canon brand named item. It's a gear forum and it is a work flow forum and it is a forum about a community of people that use a variety of tools holistically not in isolation.

We have both stated our cases and let's be gentlemen and agree to disagree and not digress into bullying or tossing out cruel comments.

Both sides of the argument have been now made clearly. There is no reason to state anything further on this topic. If you do not like this topic please report it to the moderator and ask that it be deleted. Really I don't see the point because it'll be old news within a day and this topic fade from the front page. But if you feel that strongly about it please bring it up with the moderator and not on this thread. It is the moderator's call.

im a nobody here, so i expect this to be overlooked...but i really dont see what the big deal is about whether someone wants to post this or not. the title of the thread clearly shows what it is about...meaning it is clearly very easy to avoid...so...if it bugs you that much...simply dont read it.

i have been an avid apple user for years...since black screens and green fonts. the man is a genius and he changed the world whether one wants to admit it or not.

all of that aside though he is still a human being, like the rest of us. show a little respect or just leave it alone.

cheers.

Tariq posted this link:

The history of Apple, the Macintosh, desktop publishing, design and digital photography are intertwined. Without Apple and the Macintosh, Photoshop may not exist!

"In 1987, Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display grayscale images on a monochrome display. This program, called Display, caught the attention of his brother John Knoll, an Industrial Light & Magic employee, who recommended Thomas turn it into a fully-fledged image editing program."
