Even if you don't use any Apple products, just think how much Steve Jobs pushed Apple and how much Apple pushed other companies.
Without the many innovative Apple operating systems over the years, where would Windows be (maybe still DOS)?
Apple started the desktop Laser printer as we know it.
Without the iPhone, would there be an Android?
Without the iPad, would there be an Galaxy Tab?
How long would we have been using 5 1/4 floppies; and then how long 3 1/2 floppies; or parallel printer ports; or serial ports? Often, Apple seemed to move before consumers where ready to give-up on old hardware and outmoded software; but looking back it was the right thing to do.
Another thing Apple has always been a leader in accessibility for those with disabilities.
Steve Jobs pushed Apple to brilliance.
Steve Jobs' legacy will live on, but I'm truly sad at his passing.
Thank you for my over 25 years of enjoying your vision and products that "Just Work".

Not really, there were actually home computing OS that had windows, two button mice, scalable fonts, windows, screens, and pre-emptive multi-tasking already in 1985 (this is what I meant by it's sad how few know about all the other innovators who got lost since history is written by the victors and gullible or poorly informed press). There was stuff out there infinitely better than MS-DOS/Windows IBM PC clones. But Gates knew how to market and how to control media so who knows that? Not many.
So, no, not at all.
Apple started the desktop Laser printer as we know it.
I have no idea for sure, but you may well be correct.
Without the iPhone, would there be an Android?
maybe not for a lot longer
Without the iPad, would there be an Galaxy Tab?
probably not, certainly not yet and certainly nothing as usable, he certainly did get the portable music, phone, tablet world going and in great form and style, that is true, quite a legacy

Sorry but you are wrong here. You think the only other option was the IBM PC clone. There was hardware far more innovative and better than that stuff (or the Apple stuff) for much of that sort of thing.
The true OS and hardware innovations really had nothing to do with the big two, for the most part. Sometimes Apple got the very basics first as in any sort of home computer at all and he did sneak the 3.5" drives and mouse/windows for the home out there shortly before others (and that does get some credit) but the brilliant engineering in that day and age leads more to names like Jay Miner and friends, however ignored by many.
but anyway this sort of talk really isn't for this thread, so I don't want to get into it too much here

certainly possible, I don't know
Steve Jobs pushed Apple to brilliance.
he certainly brought them back from the brink and revolutionized the music distribution industry and hand-held computing

I'm not fussed at all about apple products, but it's always sad to see someone pass on before their time due to cancer. Sad times for the jobbs family.

I get it...if it's breaking the rules, it's okay, as long as you think it's "worth talking about".
The real moderators have all but given up on these forums.
Don't get me wrong, I've got an ipod, an iphone4 (that conveniently auto corrects my name from Rob to Ron, that everytime I type shit, it makes it shut, or shot, and quite a few other words (hell is always he'll), and a few other apple devices. yeah, I get he was big in the computer/tech world, but it still isn't relevant to the Canon forums.
Yes, it sucks for him. It sucks worse for everyone of his friends and family. It sucks he won't be developing. I get that.

Steve has had a profound impact on my professional (IT geek), creative and leisure lives. I believe his impact on mankind cannot yet be fully measured.
God speed, Steve. I expect even more amazing innovations on the other side...
I am very sad to see him go. I didn't like everything Apple did, but I still prefer their products to others, often by quite a margin. He was so good at what he did, and really walked his own path, unlike almost anyone else. Refused to compromise on design and quality, when it was the norm to pump out cheap plastic crap in volume.
I wish his family all the best, and hope that Apple can continue to produce top products for the world.

Maybe if certain people learned to post in the appropriate forum, this forum would not be so cluttered with threads that do not relate directly to Canon. The OP posted this on 4 different forums. He should be the one asking a moderator to move it to the Alternative Gear & Lenses Forum, or delete it from the other three forums.
Why do you think this site has different forums
Clearly this topic has noting to do with the iPhone or the iPad. That's not what I intended and that's not how most members viewed it.
I would posit that 50%+ of Canon digital photographers process their images on Apple computers so I think it's a very relevant topic personally. And I think most people of the forum do too - 1400 people read this topic so far. Many posted heart felt sentiment. Three people including yourself didn't like it. I believe that most people on this forum thought that it was very relevant. This topic is aimed at Canon digital shooters who use Macs to process their images. These days much of the process of shooting Canon digital is done on a computer just as in the old days it was done in the dark room. And for the majority of creative professionals and enthusiast it is done on a Mac computer and the founder of the Mac computer has just passed away.
So what forum would have been appropriate? Saying that the "Alternative Gear and Lenses" forum is a better choice seems is incorrect in my opinion. I don't think you understand what that forum is about. I helped create the "Alternative Gear and Lenses" forum and it was created to discuss primarily use of alternative camera and lens systems. At the time is was created to move discussion of higher-end Leica, Zeiss and large and medium format systems off the Canon forum into a dedicated forum. Several of us where adapting Leica R and Zeiss C/Y mount lenses to Canon digital cameras at the time so we needed a separate forum to discuss this in detail. It has now morphed and devolved a bit to include others brands of shooting systems. But it has no more or less relevance in that forum than the Canon forum. I would think it would be equally relevant in both forums. It's relevant to people who shoot with digital Canon cameras and process their images on a Mac just as much as it is relevant to people who shoot Leica digital cameras and process their images on the Mac. The "Alternative Gear and Lenses" is not a catch all forum for everything not Canon specific. So I have to kindly disagree.
I also don't see any rule that states the same topic can't be discussed on more than one forum. The topic only needs to be relevant and clearly most people thought the topic was relevant on the respective forums and replied in kind.
There are many threads on the Canon digital forum that are tangentially relevant. For example right now people are discussing using Rokinon lenses on Canon bodies on the Canon digital forum. Now technically that is the kind of topic that we designed the "Alternative Gear and Lenses" forum for. But I see no problem with it being here. Likewise people discuss Adobe Lightroom here and so forth. I don't think a topic has to be only about a specific Canon lens or body. It has never been that way since the inception of FM. I've been here a long, long time and I would actually say we used to have much more inter-modal discussion on this forum. I don't think there is any historical precedent for saying this forum has to discuss nothing besides a specific Canon brand named item. That sounds pretty dull to me. It's a gear forum and it is a work flow forum and it is a forum about a community of people that use a variety of tools holistically not in isolation.
If this topic isn't for you and you don't process your Canon digital images on a Mac and don't have much interest in the Mac than please move on to a topic you enjoy more. On this topic people want to discuss their grief and possibly the future of their preferred operating system. Please don't belittle us by saying this is about iPhones and not relevant.
And as far as this being relevant to a Canon forum... It is just at relevant as talking about Adobe Photoshop and/or Lightroom. Personally I take photos on my Canon cameras, plug the cards into an iMac or MacBook Air, import them into Aperture (another Apple product) for editing and posting to the web. I am sure I am not alone in that workflow so for those of us who use Apple products to support our Canon cameras this is a VERY relevant topic.

Wondered about that too... Anyway, I can understand it means a lot to many people. I wonder what changes in direction Apple will be taking the coming years (not that I'll be buying any of their products, most likely).

The history of Apple, the Macintosh, desktop publishing, design and digital photography are intertwined. Without Apple and the Macintosh, Photoshop may not exist!
"In 1987, Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan began writing a program on his Macintosh Plus to display grayscale images on a monochrome display. This program, called Display, caught the attention of his brother John Knoll, an Industrial Light & Magic employee, who recommended Thomas turn it into a fully-fledged image editing program."
