p.198 #1 · What is your most recent (alt) lens purchase?

One of our members bought one recently and tested it thoroughly with an A7, found it not suitable for this camera, and sold it again right away. It was not really sharp into the corners until f11 or so, and even then with severe fringing. Not in the same class as the WATE. I am not sure if there was any copy variation in play.

Interesting! I'll have to do way more testing but preliminary testing puts it miles ahead of the G28 and even the OM 28 f/2 at all apertures on the A7S. No fringing I could see yet, and no major vignetting or color casts wide open. I'll do more testing over the next week and report back. So far I'm very excited by what I've seen, but who knows? The devil's in the details...

Mine would be Distagon 25/2. Man, this lens is very sharp wide open. A truly remarkable lens from Zeiss!

I just put a $100 deposit on the 15mm VC Heliar III with Cameraquest. I noticed at the same time that the 40mm Heliar announced with the 15mm at Photokina is shipping if anyone is interested. This is the one that has no helicoid, has to be used with a Leica M-E mount close focus adapter.
Also waiting on a 24-85mm Contax N due to be delivered tomorrow in the snowstorm predicted up here in New England.

Vern, Metabones (edit, and Kipon) make MF adapters with wide collars for the Contax G lenses that is easy to MF with gloves.

Thanks Mike, I've seen those adapters. I've heard things about people not like them either for various reasons. Considering I want to eventually move to a Leica system anyway, and considering how much I love my Olympus OM's, I think I'll just use those for now.

I managed to get a copy of the E55 Leica MATE in a local deal for 2/3 its normal price. Couldn't resist trying on the A7S - bought it with an eye to the future for use on the M as well. Early tests are very positive but I have to get out more with it before I'll know for sure.

Vern,

Keep us posted on your findings. By the way the Phigment Leica M to NEX adapter may prove to be of great value to you at least to 50mm and possibly 75mm. The adapter was designed before the release of the FF A7 series cameras. At about 75mm and longer there is some vignetting, but the adapter will allow for at the very least identifying which focal length (and the maximum aperture) M mount lens took your images. The standard set-up is also set so that when you start to focus the lens the camera automatically sets things for the 7.2X setting of the A7r (that is the lower of the 2 magnifications); translate that to your A7s. Paul had to help make some modification to the code for my Minolta CLE MC 40mm f2 lens, but the A7r records with images taken with this lens now as 40mm and f2. In the case of my new WATE the camera records 16mm and f4.

For all you fellow gear heads, KEH has all of their film gear at 15% off. Just use the promo code "FILM". This includes film-era lenses.

Fortunately for me, the Tele-Tessar FE 350/4 was my only temptation on the site, and somebody else snapped it up.

I'm up to 53 lenses now, with another arriving today... and the majority of these aren't seeing any use. Maybe it's time to start a new thread ... which (alt) lenses have you SOLD recently?

Now to go check out the KEH site...

There's not enough daylight to try all of those lenses, this time of the year...

Contax Distagon 2,8/25

I am accumulating a selection of wides, some of them have to go I guess after some testing. Just found an offer for a Leica-R 28mm v2 at a reasonable price as well...

I just received a new lens. A Summicron R 50/2 to use on the A7S.

EDIT: removed image as realised this thread is all about the lenses.

I will see if I can find some time to test it against the distagon 28/2,8 and the Elmarit-R 28/2,8 and possibly some other wides on the A7r. But daylight is scarce here at the moment...

From what I have read the Distagon 2,8/25 should be almost as good as the Distagon 2,8/28.

My suspicion from its reputation that the R 28mm f2.8 Elmarit V2 will be the best. I love mine, it is an outstanding performer but has gotten quite costly.

Finally added the Otus 85 to the 55 which I've had the 55 for a year and the 85 for two months. Both are very fine lenses. They are sharp and detailed in a way unlike any other lenses I have or have used. I've said before but its worth repeating that the Sigma Art advocates are quite right that their lens is very close in sharpness, but they miss the point that sharpness is only one of the qualities that sets these lenses apart. I doubt there are many who regret the purchase of either lens or didn't think they provide full value.

Black is black, white is white where every other lens renders a slightly greyed version of either. Shoot a backlit winter branch and you will find it is actually brown without the slightest CA/fringing. Backlit portraits are completely free of lens flare which opens a whole new approach to people photos.

Two things on the wish list: A better Zeiss lens cap and a truly high rez, low noise Canon body.

Until I shot this I didn't realize the 55 is longer than the 85.
