Mark, Yes, I thought that was an interesting article. Holding hope that Nikon will come out swinging with a FF mirrorless in a classic style.

Re: the mods to the Df. Best thing I ever did with mine was put the Type K3 split image/microprism focusing screen in mine. What was old, is new. Hard to beat a great optical VF. Well will keep my GAS down for the moment anyway. Especially since a Df(2) is not on the horizon.

Hi George! I can imagine your Type K3 split image/microprism screen is working fantastic with your manual focus lenses, but I'm curious as to how it works with your new AF 200-500 lens? Does it interfere in anyway with autofocus lenses?

Most of my lenses are manual focus... several Zeiss and Nikkors; and I only have two autofocus lenses at the moment... my 200f2VRII and my Sigma Art 50. I'm a one body guy, so I'm just wondering if the spit image/microprism would be advantageous for both type of lenses.

Best wishes,
Don

Don - no issues at all. Tested at different ranges shooting my LensAlign target and did not have to enter any AF offsets. I got a keeper

I have the Df set to not show the Focus Point with MF glass mounted and show it when AF glass is mounted. That way the focus point does not interfere with the Split Image center of the K3 focus screen. I have read that the K3 may slightly impact spot metering, but nothing that I have really noticed. I shoot fully manual most of the time.

Below are two quick attempt examples to show the K3 screen in the Df. Shot with the Fuji using the Micro-Nikkor 55mm/3.5 through the viewfinder of the Df.

Thanks for that George! That is really great to know!
I'm also very happy that you found yourself a keeper in the 200-500. I can definitely see one of those in my future 😊
Best wishes,
Don

George,
Please let me know from where did you get the Type K3 split screen from and who installed it for you. Thanks very much.

Its available from B&H and my guess is our handy friend George installed it himself... But I'm interested in how challenging installation was and whether there was a need to use shims to deal with focus accuracy... though if he is relying exclusively on what the split screen offers what you see IS what you get...

How ironic...shot with the Fuji using focus peaking at a split focus screen in a Df. Go figure. Which aid do you like better?

The Nikon Type K3 screen will not fit (perfectly) the Df as made. There is a company in Taiwan (focusingscreen.com) that modifies the stock screens to be used in various bodies. Type K3 is only one type they offer. Installation instructions are also posted on their webpage.

I did the installation myself and no shims were needed. Shims were included with the kit.

Yes, I am a confused mess. Fuji is the swiss army knife that allows every combination possible. But for me the optical VF with the split image microprism wins. Again that is just my $.02.

The one thing that kills it for me on an EVF is something that I need shooting outside in bright light. Polarized prescription glasses. Guess what you get in the EVF with polarized prescription glasses? A black screen

That is only one scenario, but an important one for me. However, the EVF in most other areas is great.

But that hybrid optical on the X-Pro2 is sweet

Just one note on the focusing screens. They are extremely easy to scratch, smudge, etc. If you are not used to or comfortable with working in tight spaces or with delicate pieces, I would recommend finding a camera repair shop to do the installation and possible shim installation and adjustments. This is the fifth body I have done this on. I installed a Katzeye screen in my D700 back when I owned it, and the Df for my current body. I also installed a couple Katzeyes and a focusingscreens.com screen for a local friend of mine. Too bad Katzeye went out of business. They had great screens and great customer service. Including installations.

Thanks George. I'm a bit like Mark in that the Df pretty much gives me what I want with the stock screen. It has been SO long since I shot with my Nikkormat that I have no memory of what a VERY bright viewfinder with a split image microprism was like. But one of the pleasures of this ongoing conversation is the fact so many options are being explored by our cyber friends. It is great to read about everyone's passion of the moment. You clearly have rather far ranging interests and a skill set that enables you to play out at the fringes...

If you add a 1/4 wave plate filter to the viewport of your EVF you will change the polarization to circular so you will be able to use your sunglasses. This same 1/4 wave plate filter is the camera side component to a circular polarizing filter, I'd try Edmonds Scientific as a source.

Jay, Thanks! I got an Edmund optics catalog in the mail just a couple weeks ago. Will be looking tonight.

Edit... Upon further review (prices), another pair of prescription sunglasses would be better

Or cannibalize a circular polarizer and try to get my local optician to cut it to fit. Got the wheels turning in my brain anyway.

Thanks George for the Df screen info.

Had to send my 3 1/2 year old beloved Df to Nikon today for a repair quote.
It over-exposes in Aperture Priority Mode no matter the metering mode.
Local camera shop were I bought it checked my settings and mounted different kinds of lenses and could not tell me why it is over-exposing.
I have a Metabones adapter to mount my old nikkors onto my Fujifilm X-T1 but the Df is a better fit for me with Nikon glass.
Anyone here had similar experience or know why it started doing this all of a sudden?

Sorry, I have never experienced it with mine. Have had my Df since it was first released. Did you try doing a default reset? On the plus side you do have a nice back up camera to use while it is being repaired. Hope it is not major. Please let us know what the issue was.

Yes, I did a reset. I was thinking maybe the stop down lever in the camera body is stuck wide open, but not sure. I will let you know what happens with it.
