You guys kill me... After reading this thread for the past two days I bought a nearly new 24G this morning in a moment of weekness after telling myself the 85G would be my only purchase untill summer.

Looking to get in on the action soon!

Here are two more snaps from a weekend at the in laws. Shot with a rented D3 as both of my bodies are in for service.

24/85 is a sweet two-lens kit. Wrap it up with a 35G

Yea, been eying up that 35 as well, I always opt for wide when I can, not sure how much use it would get... Can't wait to play with this thing! Awesome shots!

If you can only carry one wide, 28 is the one to get.

28/1.4?

24 vs. 28 vs. 35 is a question of taste. A 35 is great for crowds, and environmental portraits. A 28 less so, especially the latter. But as I said, it is a question of taste, there are no universal truths here. A 24/35 combo is definitely better than just a 28 though.

There's a running thread on the 28/1.4 and I was wondering whether it's "all that"? Noted Nikon guru, the unpleasant Bjørn Rørslett bucks the conventional wisdom and reports that the three samples he'd tested were not impressive wide open. While Ken Rockwell does his usual spiel about how wonderful it is ("greatest ever!") he does qualify it by adding that he may have had a particularly good sample.
There were photos on the 28 thread comparing it to the 24/1.4. The 28 might have been slightly better at pulling some detail out of the shadows. Maybe.
Anyone here had experience with both and can comment?
The primary image poster there, Greg, aka, "Nikkor AIS" has a real handle on that lens that impresses and his shots have a unique look about them but I'm uncertain if that's due to his style of shooting or attributable to the lens itself.

According to MTF's 24G is better wide open:

Nikkor AIS told me AF's much faster and more accurate with his 28 1.4 than 24 1.4.

Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D

Nikkor 24 1.4 AFS

I was checking out this thread just to see the mosty excellent photography and I saw my name mentioned. So I thought I would respond.
First off I want to say that both lenses the Nikkor 24 AFS and the Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D are both top notch performers.
Being differnt focal length they do offer differnt angle of view. For some the Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D is an over priced lens from days gone by. Fair enough. However I encourge anyone interested in buying any lens in this price range to take anyone's opinion (even mine) with a grain of salt. There is no substitute for seeing for one's self.

And I for one would have no problem adding the Nikkor 24 1.4 AFS in my bag, If A. I could afford it and B. I f I was willing to give up of of my other lenses in my Nikon bag.
Which is possible but not likley as my bag is full and I often carry a Leica bag and medium format Plaubel Makina.

To much gear is no almost worse than not enough somtimes.

Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D

Here are a couple more comparison shots with theNikkor 28 1.4 AF-D and the Nikkor 24 1.4 AFS

Draw your own conclusion. All test shots where done hand held at the same repective aperture and the same post processing.
