I guess I'll post another shot since I am the only one that seems to have this lens. Maybe everyone is out trying to get that million dollar shot with theirs?
I really think the 24-70 is about 85% of a 24/1.4, missing only the extra stops and better distortion control. Otherwise, it's right there, particularly in sharpness.
I am simply trying to explain why people are crazy for fast primes...those extra stops is what people want! One of the main criticisms of nikon lens offerings is the absence of fast primes.
I never mentioned in the above sentence what I want but now I do know what you want .

The focal length is obviously a major part of it, along with sharpness and also the nano coating. The 24-70 is terrific even at 2.8, and so it doesn't give up anything in sharpness at 2.8 to the 24/1.4. It just can't match the light sensitivity or the distortion control. For many people, particularly those who have the 24-70 and can't/won't shell out the cash for a 24/1.4, the 24-70 is close to being enough by itself.
I've got the "holy trinity" zooms, but I've been finding myself preferring to shoot primes more for some odd reason. I'd love a 35 1.4 as I think that's an easier focal length for me, but every shot i've seen with the 24 1.4 has been been pretty damn impressive - though I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that someone willing to put $2200 into such a specialized lens probably knows how to use it.
Anyways, this really seems like a fantastic lens for those that know how to use it.
Maybe I'll practice shooting at 24 for a while before I pony up for one of these.
It's not just about the sharpness. There's also the dof that interests people. You just can't get the same type of subject isolation with the 24-70. Not even close.
just sold my 24-70 and I shoot weddings (am I nuts?) maybe, but I know my receptions and e-sessions will only be shot with primes 24,50,85 !!! I always felt like I was cheating with the zoom and thinking more about other things than the image - now that I am going back to all primes I feel the challenge will be there up front but I like that. I still have the 70-200 VRII for receptions and other portraits

Nice one. I didn't know you shot weddings, Dom. Is this something new for you?
