I am using manual focus since I am using it on my 1ds3 but Lloyd Chambers of Diglloyd detailed all the AF problems he had with his copy of the lens. I think that is why this lens has rolled out so slowly and why it has been hard to find a copy of the lens till now. I don't know if Nikon found any problems with the AF with this lens yet.

Erik, mine has only misfocused exactly once out of about 200 shots...and yes it was in low light. All night shots I have posted were AF and it seemed to be spot on in every case.

Wayne, from Lloyd's site it first seemed to be with just the D3X and then he had once session where the D3S did it as well. Most issues I have heard of have been with the pro bodies (D3X/D3S) and not with the D700 FWIW

Ryan,
That's interesting. Wonder why this lens doesn't work as well with pro bodies and their AF systems?
Lloyd's AF failures with the lens also occurred during outdoor daylight shooting and seemed to front focus on distant subjects if I remember correctly.

Ya, I read about Lloyd's problems, and they don't seem to be the same as mine, that's why I havent been quick to assume I have a problem. My AF problems are much more subtle. So much so, that the lens is still _usable_ in low light, but not as incredible sharp as it is in good light.

Francis-
Think I could buy you a beer one evening soon, and we can compare copies and see if mine performs differently than yours?

The last one is just too cute.

Note that you have compared 28 1.4 vs 24 1.4, were you able to draw any conclusion?

Thanks, thats is are new kitty "Precious" ( my kid named her)

Well as far as the Nikkor 24 1.4 and the Nikkor 28 1.4 comaprsion. At the end of my test I have more questions than when I started. It was really fun comparing the two. As far as IQ , The Nikkor 28 1.4 AF-D definitely has more shadow detail and the 24 1.4 AFS has more contrast. The Nikkor 24 1.4 may be a little sharper. If you want to blur the background and have more a of 3D effect( what ever that is) than the 28 1.4 is the way to go. If you want the the nano coat and AFS and the wider feild of view than the 24 1.4 is your choice.

Thanks guys,if you check out the the Nikon cafe I did 24 AFS vs the 28 1.4 AF-D thread on the lens lust section. . Many side by side images for your Viewing pleasure. There is also a very long thread on the 28 1.4 AF-D.

Getting back to the Nikkor 24 1.4 AF-S . When I started MF with this lens I really started to bond. I must admit I felt a little sad when I gave it back to my pal who let me use it to do the comparison with the Nikkor 28 1.4 AFD. It's the second copy Iv used, and both where tack sharp and focused on the head on a pin. It's so great that Nikon is finbally getting up to speed on the there wide primes and Im looking forward to the 35 1.4 AFS and the 28 1.4 AFS that are sure to follow.

Glad to see you here, Gregory! It's not because the Cafe was down for maintenance, is it?

I know you absolutely love your 28, but if you could spend more time with that 24, you'd fall in love.

If someone has the financial means and some photographic ability I don't see how they can avoid purchasing this lens after reading this thread

Hey Phillip, you caught me. To late for me not to love the 24 1.4 AFS. When I started to MF with this lens, I really started to bond with it. Although there is no comparsion in the feel of the Nikkor AIS focus lenses, the AF ring on the 24 1.4 AFS is more than adaquate to get the job done. Im hoping to spend some more time with the Nikkor 24 1.4 in th near future.

I really need to do more wide shooting...! It's never been a big part (or even a small part) of my repertoire, but I love some of the results it gets and it really makes me want to go out and shoot something.

The 24/1.4 will have to wait, though. New RRS tripod, Arca-Swiss Z1 head, and 85/1.4G have very much tapped out the photo budget for the moment!
