I know Nill does not want comments in this thread but I'm gonna defy that after going through all the 11 pages (so far) of photos: there are just so many AMAZING photos here. Wow!

Nick, I absolutely love these shots. I particularly like the 3rd shot, the shot of the snow-covered bench with a blurred figure up ahead. How are you able to get the white balance so accurate with all that white? Absolutely beautiful pics.

Thanks man.
Actually, I shot those with AWB all the way and didn't really have to correct anything in post...

If you want to start tracking with any point other than the centre point, it's necessary to select that point manually and set CF III-8-3, with 18 surrounding expansion points.

Ah - that sounds much like the 7D. Thanks.

Nill, I think you will be very happy with the M4. I am although I have yet to shoot soccer as, like you, the season start is a few weeks away. I have shot a couple of teams practicing and a lacrosse practice. The camera was great but it is critical that you understand the relationship between CF3.8, CF3.2 and CF3.4. I started out playing with them independently with confusing results because I didn't realize things like CF3.4-1 needing CF3.8 (AF expansion) enabled, etc. I know you've seen the guide recently posted online which is pretty good. I still don't know where I'll end up on these settings when it comes to soccer. I don't know if I'll end up with left/right expansion points or all 18. I do like to manually select the focus point rather than always use the Center. For example, when a player is moving from right to left I like to use a focus point on the right and to frame he player on the right 1/3 of the image. I am also looking forward to registering different AF points for landscape and portrait orientation. Especially when it some to capturing headers or, now that I have the 300 2.8, switching to portrait orientation when a player gets too close for landscape.

And, yes, I now have the 300 2.8 IS as you recommended. Looking forward to shooting with that and comparing it to my Sigma 120-300 2.8.

I also assume you know that C1 5 Pro does not yet support the Mark 4. I know you are a C1 users. Hopefully that will happen soon. Before you start soccer season.

Enjoy!

Thanks Dan. The C1 5.1 beta has Mark IV support.

Congrats on the 300. I think it had the best overall image quality of all the lenses I've owned, and I really miss it sometimes.

Hi Dan,

I have not yet tested my 120-300 on my 1d4; but the 300-800 seems to work very well, even with a 1.4 or 2X TC. Have you tried your 120-300 yet and what is your impression.

I played with the 120-300 the first couple days I had the M4. But didn't really have good sports options and was still playing with the CFs. Plus, I think it may need a bit of MA. But there were too many variables to make a judgment. 25 degree F, snow and fog here in Denver this weekend. So it may be a bit before I can put these through a good test. I'll let you all know when I do. I want to do a good side by side with the Sigma and the Canon 300 2.8.

Shot a concert today in a bar with craptastic lighting.

f2.8 1/125 ISO12800 the entire time. Had my 50L with me but the FL didn't do it for me so switched to the 70-200L. Pretty good for ISO12800 I would say!

Breitling, love the Canada geese - 2, 3 and 4 in particular are fantastic.

The Con's in the Conclusion pretty much sums up RG's experience with the AF. You need more than 2 months to appreciate and relate the customizations for AI Servo II. The D3S was available much earlier so no surprise that RG couldn't make most of the 1D4. Given equal amounts of time I'm sure the 1D4 may match or even exceed the D3S.
