When using all 45 focus points, initial focus still needs to be locked in with the center focus point before starting to shoot. Failure to lock in initial focus with the center point is a common user error that will result in out-of-focus shots
So am I understanding that in 45 point focus selection or expanded mode the center focal point needs to be aimed and a half shutter push to lock on then the camera, understanding what is being focused on can now track handing off to other available points as required (only to available points depending on the mode selected)? Am I reading that right ?

That is how AI Servo with all points has always worked in the 1D series.

Cfn III - 3 - 2? Interesting, what led you to use that setting? I haven't played much with that function.

I just came across the wirte up in the link below. Since this is a "hands on thread" I thought other new owners might like to read the review. Please forgive me if this is not a good place to post this and I will remove it. That's interesting - and a wee bit surprising: the 7D introduces the option of using all AF points but with the ability to start the AF lock from any selected AF point, not just the centre point - does the Mk IV not have that?

If the IV is set to all 45 points active (ring of fire), the subject must be acquired by the centre AF point. Once acquired, if it moves off that point the camera will continue to track it with any of the 45 AF points.
If you want to start tracking with any point other than the centre point, it's necessary to select that point manually and set CF III-8-3, with 18 surrounding expansion points. From my understanding, if the subject moves off the user selected point the 18 surrounding expansion points then form around the new camera selected main point. In theory this will allow the subject to move to any of the 45 AF points and the camera will continue to track it around the AF field. The setting of III-4 may also affect this somewhat.

Nick, I absolutely love these shots. I particularly like the 3rd shot, the shot of the snow-covered bench with a blurred figure up ahead. How are you able to get the white balance so accurate with all that white? Absolutely beautiful pics.
