True. There's not a reviewer on the planet that can claim the focus is bad.

OK, I've taken delivery of first MKIV late December, a few more on order yet to come.

I'll preface this with I shoot pro sports full time, and currently own 7 pro bodies, 3 x Nikon D3's, 3 x Canon 1D MK3's, and 1 x Canon 1DMK4, and have also owned every 1 Series back to the original 1D in similar quantities. Safe to say I have put several million frames through the Canon 1 series bodies over the years, and know the animal well

I bought the D3 during the MK3 fiasco, and realized it was really a great Camera. I'm not biased to either Nikon or Canon; and will use/buy whatever does the job best to gain a competitive edge in a tough sports market.

Focus tracking is a good improvement on the MK3, the ablility to select all the "in between" focus points is a welcomed return and a feature that was a real pain on the MK3, as the gaps between selectable focus points was too big

Auto orientation focus point switching is a great feature that I love, as it's often hard to switch horizontal>vertical points quick enough in some sports on the MK3

Hi ISO improved on from the MK3, but still not as good as the Nikon D3, let alone the D3S, The files up to about 2500 are better than the Nikon D3, from 3200 the Nikon starts to get ahead, at 4000+ its quite a noticable advantage in real world indoor sports.

Focus speed/acquisition on the MK4 is probably a little quicker than the MK3, and also the Nikon D3

The buffer on the MK4 feels a lot deeper, and overall the Camera feels very snappy and responsive.

LCD display is also a welcome addition, as once again, the MK3 compared to the D3 display was a joke. Now I would say the Canon MK4 display is probably better in bright sunlight than the Nikon D3/D3S. The only thing that takes a little getting use to is the image on the displsy sort of pixelates as you zoom in and pan around until you stop and let it settle, not a big problem though once you are aware of it.

The implementation of the Auto ISO feature needs more work. It is not as effective as on the Nikon D3/D3S. If you try to set a minimum shutter speed on the MK4 whilst in Av, the only way to do it is to setup a custom fn. The Custom function will only let you set the minimum shutter speed in full stop steps, this is not adequate when you want to effectively set the minimum shutter speed, and aperture, and let the ISO vary to control motion blur, none of the "in between" shutter speeds are available, eg: Custom Fn jumps from 125>250>500>1000

I tried a different method, shooting Manual Mode with Auto ISO enabled, which gives you 1/3 stops increments in shutter and and Aperture, but this mode disables the exposure compensation, so once again you a snookered for flexability here, as you are always on and off the exp comp dial for what I do.

Also, if for example, you set a minimum shutter speed of 1/500 in the custom fn, and the Camera hits the Top ISO limit of say 12,800, it will stick on 1/500, and under expose the shot, the Nikon D3, on the other hand, will then as a last resort drop the minimum shutter speed and still get correct exposure. This problem is also linked and aggrevated by the MK4 in ablilty to set the Min shutter speed in 1/3 stops. If you don't shoot tough indoor sports, this will probably not worry you.

One other minor dislike on the 1DMK4, the delay it takes for the Voice Memo to start recording is far too long, you need to hold down the button for 2 seconds before it starts to record, in fast paced sports, or photojourno apps, this is too slow, the time its taken you to wait for it to start recording you've missed another good shot. Once again, if you have no need for this feature it's a non event. I use it a lot, it saves taking paper notes as it's embedded in the file. The good news is you can now play back the voice memo on the Camera which you couldn't on the MK3 (You always could on the D3)

Spoken to CPS who have put my comments forward to Engineering in Japan regarding the ISO/Custom Shutter Speed full stop functionality..we'll see what happens. Overall, I think the Camera is great, hopefully a firmware tweak to fix the above, and it's perfect

Good comparison from a real world shooter.

I am not sure I agree with the Nikon dropping the speed in the scenario below. I think I would rather have an under exposed versus blurry image. Maybe they could provide a choice of how to handle this situation.

Hi jerrykur

As I mentioned, it's all linked to the implemenation issue, if the Canon would let you set it in third stops, you would probably be more on the money, and rely less on it reducing the min shutter speed set. Its worse because of the ability to only adjust and set min shutter speed in the Custom Fn in full stops.

I should have also pointed out, in poor light, that if the MK4 hits to the Top Limit of the Set Auto ISO, and you have the Minimum shutter speed set that would result in under exposure, it will often hesitate badly and often not fire straight away, so you may not get the shot at all..........

Doesn't Canon have a "safety shift" setting that would address this? I know it does for Tv and Av.

Yes it does Nill, but I'm yet to get a handle on how it really works in the above more complex combinations. I did try it quickly one time and it seemed to overide settings too randomly, I certainly didn't trust in real world work and what it was doing, but I'm willing to be corrected. It's something I plan to explore further, but not at a real job, and I'm just too busy at the moment to experiment too much

CPS couldn't really tell me much about Safety Shift and how it would react either, and the Manual sure doesn't give much away.

It's pretty straightforward in Av and Tv, but I don't have a clue on Auto ISO as it's still only a gleam in my eye. Maybe the White Paper might provide some hints?

Nill, I'll have to try it again when I get a minute, but from memory if you enabled safety shift in the above combinations, it seemed to just effectively overide the minimum shutter speed and not bump the ISO as desired....but like I say, that's just going from memory, it spooked me a bit and I turned it back off as i was at a paying job

Hi Nill

Just grabbed the Camera and quickly tried safety shift again.

As I remembered, behaviour is not as expected

Enabling Tv/Av Safety Shift when Auto ISO enabled and a Min Shutter speed is set as a custom fn results in the Camera dropping to 1/100th even if the preset Custom Fn Min was 1/1000, and whacking the ISO down to 2000 instead of trying to use the top limit set ISO of 12,800, so efectively it disables the Auto ISO, and the Custom Fn

So, too quirky for my liking.

One useful thing I got from RG's report was that the custom function to control AF continuous tracking priority caused unwarranted front focusing. I had been using that setting all along and so now I not only have to redo my testing but it could also be that I don't need to mess around with MA. That's a good thing because I was getting inconsistent results with MA at different shooting distances (say 30m, 20m and 10m).

Another is that he did not get great results with using just the centre AF sensor. This could in part be because the central sensor has a very long horizontal part (sensitive to vertical contrast) and that could easily cause the lens to focus where you don't want it to. In that case we can use Spot AF but only if we have the right lens (one with an AF Stop button).

Its really a shame what Canon did with auto ISO both in the mk4 and the 5dmk2. I mean this really was a no-brainer.

This thread is for the birds -all the bird shots are awesome. I was able to grab a Mk 4 for the weekend and was out at the drag strip yesterday. Coming back to a pro body (after using D60, 10D, 30D, 40D and 50D it was a big learning curve. I only used a few of the custom functions and had a problem figuring out the focus points but managed to get a few exposures I was happy with.
There's no snow here, in fact it was 105 here yesterday and super bright and using the L setting on the ISO button was magic - reminds me of the olde daze with Fuji Velvia - beats Nikon's 200 ISO low with a power pole. Any how I have one here

The Mark IV is the best camera I have used so far. I personally love everything about it. No issues with mine at all except for some user error. Also the video feature works very well. Hands down better then my Mark III and 1ds Mark III.
