That's really good news Congrats, this is in fact better news than any photo gear can give! Resist the addiction to EOSfun from the 17 for a while. Recover from the pain of being unemployed first. I guess there are a few more priorities now. Anyway, it's good to hear there is some new perspective (pun) for you and EOSfun from the nicest TS-E in the current line. Good luck to you and your wife I now hope, Cliff (Molson) has good news soon as well!

Thank you for your kind words. Indeed I intend to wait a while and in the meantime I'll just save a few bucks. This is one seriously expensive lens.
Well, I tried one during a two day trip. Major disappointment. Not a single image was sharp (f8, ISO 100 and 1/500 were the most used settings). Nevertheless, as it was my first encounter with it, I'm not ruling out user error, despite the fact that I know my way in TS. I hope I'll have a chance to test it (rather than just use it) later.
Of course it's possible. I said I'm not ruling out user errors. But then again, I had several tens of pictures with it. All look like that. And I stress, in the plant pic I heard the focus confirmation beep. Also, it was not a private lens. It was loaned to me by Canon Israel. Logic suggests they make sure the lenses they own are "good copies". I'll check this with them and report back.
When shooting with the 17 for landscapes just stick it on 3m mark on hyper focal and everything will be sharp from almost 0.5 metre to infinity @f11 (and that is with full shift).

I would not assume this! I used a 100-400 lens from Canon on a workshop last year and every photo was less then sharp. Never seen this in any other lens. I've shot with other 100-400 that were great.
