p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 17mm shotout: 17/4 TS vs. 17-55/2.8 IS vs. 10-22/3.5-4.5

After my initial disappointment from the 17/4 TS I decided to get a bit more serious. I took it again and compared it to my 17-55 and 10-22. I didn't test other lenses because these are the lenses which were available to me.

Caveat: I am not a lens tester by any means but I did try my best to keep everything else constant except the lens.

Test methodology:
Camera was mounted on tripod, which stayed stationary throughout the shooting.
Focusing was done using MF via 10X LV (i.e.. MLU) in timer mode.
Focusing was done only once for each lens.
Focusing point was the sign seen in the crops. As I only have an APS body (7D), I chose a focusing point which is close to the edges of the frame, to make the test a bit tougher.
RAW mode was used and pictures were converted to JPEG without any PP. Normally I sharpen my pictures because of the AA filter but here I wanted to avoid any manipulation, to get a baseline.
M mode was used and exposures were kept constant: F4 and 1/3000, f/5.6 and 1/1500, f/8 and 1/750.
Zoom lenses were set to 17mm.
17/4 TS was set to zero tilt and zero shift.

Order of appearance in this thread is constant: 10-22 first, 17-55 second and 17/4 TS last.
Here, the first pic is the whole image and later, the f/4 crops.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Again I stress: I am not a lens tester but I would like to hear explanations.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Hi Yakim,

My feeling, based on experience with my 17 is it should be better than that, especially unshifted. The fact that the shifted crops seem better than unshifted would indicate something is off. Any chance to try another copy?

You've got a bum 17 TS-E. Return it or send it in to Canon for servicing.

The explanation is that your TS-E is seriously out-of-whack.

You have a broken TSE.

Every lens you buy is not any good. I recommend you to never buy any Canon lens

Every 17 TSE I have used or review read, shows it to be an excellent optical performer. Your copy needs help. Sad after agonizing over this purchase for a year.

Wow that's bad, return or repair.
Good luck!

That "hazy" look kinda points to a lens alignment problem. Especially unshifted. I would tend to agree with the majority--something's awry with this copy of the lens.

1. This is not my lens. It belongs to Canon Israel. They let me try it.
2. How can any problem occur in MF? After all, I focused until image was sharpest.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

One can look at it differently. They might want to make absolutely sure I won't steal it.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I think they are trying to convince you that the 17 TSE are crap

Definitely looks like there is something wrong with the 17 TS-E. Looks like something is out of alignment.

It's the sharpest it will get in its current state. If the lens is fixed, its "sharpest" will be even sharper.

the 17 pc should be way better than that. You get it fixed and fixed correctly; you will cut yourself with those images.

Something is wrong with that copy for sure...

My 17 tse blows away all my other wide angles, including the 17-40, 18mm zeiss and my 14-24 (with 16-9 adapter)... (well, it doesn't "blow away" the 14-24, but definitely out-performs it...)

either you are doing something disastrously wrong or you got a REALLY bad copy and send that coke bottle back

can't say which is the case

but you definitely need to either return yourself or the lens, that much is sure

Got it. I'll contact them and advise them to send it to the lab.

Happy shooting,
