Do explain how you came to the conclusion that it's a "major issue". Have you actually tried it?

I repeat this public service announcement: do not judge based on RG's samples. His comparative 5DII samples from the same shoot are much noisier than I've seen from the 5DII elsewhere, so his 7D samples aren't a good measure of 7D performance taken in a vacuum. Whatever he's doing in post processing, the samples from both are noisier than they should be. Go to Imaging Resource instead.

That is all.

Most (if not all) of the 7D sample pictures on his site have 'digital dandruff'.
But I think he went overboard with the post processing, so the samples do not accurately show what the camera really produces.

So which is more aggrevating, hearing all the b!tchin' about FF, etc. or the 3-4 weeks of wait for the UPS truck to deliver my 7D...

I'd say the latter because then you'd be worrying about your 7D in the hand of a courier as well as having nothing to do except read all the bitching about FF here.. Double the stress.

This isn't the camera for fast glass and manual focus. And it's $1600. It's understandable that some things are left out. It's a big number camera for the kids on a budget.

It is a standard "stock" focusing screen with electronic grid-lines and AF-point overlays. Defaulting to a precision screen is something that they would never do because this always results in a darker VF. It is safe to say they went for the brightest VF image possible, which means completely useless for manual focusing lenses f2.8 and faster. No amount of electronic wizardry will change that, and it is completely illogical (read "stupid") for them to leave the option of replaceable screens out of a camera of this caliber.

For anyone who uses manual focus, this is a major issue.

Really? So explain why the 40D has an Ef-S screen option, but this higher-end camera does not.

Some owners actually lack balls (born without them).

Sorry mate but that's not the explanation I'm after. I was thinking more along the line of how the VF LCD actually works and why it won't work with a fast glass and/or MF lens.

If I can MF the MP-E 65mm at 5:1 with the Rebel VF, I sure as hell can MF any lens with this 7D. You guys whinge too much.

The way the focus screen is oriented, it would have been cool if it was slot loaded and accessible to regular users. It looks as though you may have to take the body apart just to get to it. Hopefully its not that tough and Katz eye ends up supporting it (the LCD overlay plus precision screen would be awesome).

>Diffraction, my friend, diffraction. The greater DOF at f/13/-16 is almost totally negated by the smearing at f/13-f/16. I can shoot f/13 with my 1Ds II and 5D, but not with my crops. Let me put it this way: I CAN shoot at f/13/-f/16 with my crops, but I don't want to.

To take the same picture with a crop you need a shorter focal length. A shorter focal length lens has more d.o.f.. Therefore you don't need to stop down as much to get the same d.o.f.. Therefore the diffraction limit doesn't really vary much between formats except in a purely numerical sense, and not so much in a pictorial sense. If it did vary significantly, point+shoot cameras would have settled at 2 Mpixels, or would need to use f1 lenses.

Richard, did you read the rest of my post?

"Granted the 20D has less resolution and what noise there is will be more visible at any given magnificaiton, but it would still be nice if Canon's newer sensors could get that more under control."

I'm well aware of the effect of increased resolution on perceived noise at a given magnification. That does not mean I don't wish for improved S/N and color response from higher density sensors. Canon's sensors have shown worse chroma noise than other manufacturers' designs in this most recent generation. I do hope the 7D offers an improvement.

Geez, @ 6400 its nipping at the heels of the 5DmkII AND the D700 which are both full frame. What exactly do you expect out of a $1600 cropper aabqnmusa?

Max aperture on the MP-E 65mm is f/2.8. Stock focusing screens can show accurate DOF for f/2.8. It's when you get to larger apertures that you start having problems. When an f/1.2 lens has DOF like an f/2.8 in the viewfinder, you're not sure if you've nailed focus or not until you've taken the shot.

Thank you for those. I have to admit - the camera looks quite amazing.
Why, why wouldn't they make a FF version?

If this is Canon's direction, perhaps the 60D will not have an ef-s. Part of the rational for macro may be the zoomed LCD.
If there sales numbers showed a lot of 1.6x screens sold, they would not eliminate the feature.
I expect they can already demo an EVF that is superior for manual focusing. I expect we are on a steady course to eliminating TTL.
