With regard to the newly anounced 7D. I shoot a lot of widlife, so crop sensor + increased weather protection sounds good. The press release says external sealing is -

"....equivalent to the legendary EOS–1N."

I'm not familiar with that camera. Anyone here got any any experience or specifications? How good a standard is it? Does it compare with the EOS-1D level of protection?

(I know there is a 7D thread. Tried asking there, but everyone is busy guessing about its high ISO performance.)

it's like the 5d2 (which was supposed to be like the eos-1N) ... the 5d2... isn't that hot in terms of sealing.

Why, why wouldn't they make a FF version?

Product cycles? What Canon has released for the past 3 years will be an indicator of what is to come for the 1-Series come February and September 2010.

Is the 7d worth getting if you have a 40d and had your sights on a 1D Mark IV?

They have. The older version is called the 5DmkII. The newer version in 1 - 1.5 years will be called the 5DmkIII. If they add 1 series AF and metering they will cal it the 3D.

Future cameras will have more features. Past cameras have fewer features. Future cameras will cost less, but still cost more than is hoped, and come somewhat later than expected. This will never change. That' why it's important we get out of the rut and actually take photos every once in a while. The difference in these cameras is a tiny, tiny part of a good photo.

I expect they can already demo an EVF that is superior for manual focusing. I expect we are on a steady course to eliminating TTL.

Well, it would still be TTL, just with an EVF instead of an optical VF. We'd have to take the R out of dSLR. This would eliminate any mirror collision issues for us Alt users, too

I think it is obvious by now that they have had to sacrifice exchangeable screens in the 7D due to this new overlay feature. At best, it is an "in-between" solution that will work for most shooters but leaves much to be desired for people like me. I hope you are correct about the potential superiority of EVF for MF. I would welcome that.

This is so true, and also why those who say 5DII owners must be upset, disappointed etc are so wrong.

We have a first rate full frame camera we can use now, today and for months past and well into the future, instead of being a heatseeker for the new features, one or more of which you can be sure, will not function perfectly.

Probably not, but it's certainly worth considering if you've got a 20D, 30D, or 40D and you have your sights on a D300.

During handeling the 1N seems to be about the same as the 1D.For sometime I thought it was weather sealed but from what I'm reading, not so much.

You're right. That statement was political incorrect. Perhaps I should rephrase the question:

Wouldn't it be like a swift kick to the mid-area below the belt line of a person that owns the 1Ds Mark III, if this camera had more dynamic range?

Hmmm...

It's certainly taking precedence over my up-to-now intended upgrade path, 40D to Mk III...

I found it odd they should bring up the 'legendary 1n' body, since so many people started taking photos in the digital age, and that the 1n was quite a long time ago.

I'd just assume it doesn't have weather-sealing and take care of it as normal. Try to keep it out of direct rain/snow/sleet/hail and sand storms.

Canon Eos 1N and later Eos 3 both had considerable environmental sealing but this was apparently significantly upgraded for the Eos 1V and all subsequent 1 series cameras. The exact specs have not been revealed in any meaningful way (AFAIK) but there was some step change at least in Canons eyes at the launch of the 1V. They now seem to be using that distinction to help differentiate their fully 'pro' 1 series from the 'semi-pro' 5DII/7D cameras.

I used to own a 1N and it was a tough little camera. I certainly got it wet many times on Oahu's beaches and to no ill effect. As I recall it had gasket on switches, extra tight body seams, foam sealing around the film door and redundant switch contacts (in case one failed I guess). It does lack the mount o-ring of the 1V and 1D series.

In theory one of the more rugged and weather resistant bodies, EOS-1n is designed for up to 1/3 of an inch of rain per hour, but who knows. Neither Canon or Nikon guarantee anything and some bodies I have had seem impervious to water and some start to sweat at the sight of it. In general the anything with EOS 1xxx in it's title is pretty darn good.

Max aperture on the MP-E 65mm is f/2.8. Stock focusing screens can show accurate DOF for f/2.8. It's when you get to larger apertures that you start having problems. When an f/1.2 lens has DOF like an f/2.8 in the viewfinder, you're not sure if you've nailed focus or not until you've taken the shot.

Have you no experience with macro, let alone at 5x mag? If you did, you would understand that the DOF is literally razor thin even when stopped down. Remember, distance plays an enormous role pertaining to DOF, the closer you are to the subject the less perceived DOF.

This is true but at least your subject would be filling more of the frame and easier to discern. Now trying to Manual Focus a 50mm lens at a moderate distance, wide open is a crapshoot without a precision screen.

I have to disagree. That camera is actually called the Nikon D700.

The 5DmkII lacks the speed and AF of the 7D (and D700).

So while the 7D might be an astounding camera in its own right, there are some of us that will reiterate..."why, why wouldn't they make a FF version?"

Thanks for the links! By the way, in the second video Mike Owen says, the EOS 7D is a completely new line up for Canon cameras- it fits in between the 50D and the 5D mark II, and is not a direct replacement for any existing camera. So safe to say the xxD series will be continued.

What is your budget. 1DMK4 will likely be in the $4,000+ range.

That is assuming the subject fills the frame more often than not, which isn't always the case. The two are very similar in nature, macro and standard wide aperture lenses when speaking of MF.
