If you assume that the sensor is way better than the lenses, which one day it could be, then the camera electronics could vary focus distance during exposure in order to extend d.o.f. at a wide aperture, and compile the sharpest data. The sensor might capture 5 frames in 1/100th of a second, for example. It would have to be done very quickly to ensure subject movement wasn't captured, but it's physically possible. Software would then compile an image by choosing the highest contrast pixels from the 5 frame set. It's sci-fi but doable. ...Show more →
Hmm... not sure 'sci-fi' and 'doable' sit comfortably in the same sentence but it's certainly something for the 1DsV designers to think about.

I'll buy a 7D, but I'm am baffled why Canon did not develop the 50D sensor with the new tech. I'm sure the results would have been even more impressive and generated an even more +ve response to the 7D.
Maybe it wasn't ready when the 50D was being developed. A year is a long time.

point in the future we probably will butt up against the absolute physical limits of what a crop sensor can achieve,
Well now, if the quality of the new crop of 8MP phone cameras is anything to go by, then possibilities of a massive sensor like the 7D in comparison, is almost fathomless.
I get the sense that this is such a fundamentally different design of sensor (and yes I know - it's what Canon wants me to think! ) that Canon really wanted to start afresh.

True enough - there's some very impressive IQ (relatively speaking) falling out of those things.
The 30D files certainly clean up pretty well from a chroma point of view, but my 40D displays significantly less luminance noise, which is far more important (in my opinion) as chroma is very easy to fix without detail loss.

As a 5DII owner, better for your sanity to be bored by the 7D than to be pissed that it's better than your 5DII in every way except for FF-ness
I think I'd wait for the real-world results. And it's still a crop camera.

My 40D (processed in Cap One 4 or Raw Therapee) has less - and finer-grained - Luma and notably less Chroma, than my 30Ds: if the 7D is as good as or better than the 40D (and first impressions are very positive) then bring it on.
One thing about higher density sensors and noise - as I mention above - (comparing 30D to 40D files really brought this home for me) is that Luma will be much finer, other things being equal, which makes it much less obtrusive.
I've look at the different viewfinder mode displays, and I don't see any square grid display. As 7D doesn't have changeable Vf screen, I would have guess Canon would have incorporate LOT more options for display, specially gris display (square, 6/4.5, etc). Am I missing something ? I would love a square mode with 50% black out borders !
Noise or grain in film is so very much less than film ever was it rarely bothers me. 1600 and a huge crop and you see some noise (grain to me) and oh my, there it is. It doesn't bother me at all. It is just part of the image, work with it. On the other hand, progress makes accepting the same amount of noise/grain at 320 asa (whatever) as was with film (slide) far from acceptable so I contradict myself. It's all good and I enjoy not looking through the focussing split finder of my Leica IIIC any longer. But it was a good learning experience with a fine camera back in the late 1960's.

Note that Canon has stated that interchangeable focus screens will not be available, so those who like to manually focus or use alt lenses are hosed.
Apparently I'm not the only one who sees this as a major issue with this camera.
