Having to buy every new model that comes down the pike is questionable....progress is progress though and some upgrades are worth it. The issue lies with the decisions to abandon gear that already works for some that is unseen. I'm all for buying a new model that will allow me to improve my product, but why would I sell the tools that make me a living before I even get a chance to use anything new ( let alone invest in it). The frenzy pitch here gets ridiculous. Anyone who would dare question a new product in a review is

The 7D seems like a great upgrade to me, from any APS-C camera, and even from a 5D. It's really nice to be able to shoot video at breathtaking quality. The AF system looks like it might be the best AF in any SLR yet. It has 18 Mpixels so it captures a grip of detail. It is 8fps without attachable grip. It performs admirably at 6400. It's a Canon, so the Liveview will be usable. It's a challenge to D700 even though it's not full frame. This is a gear forum, where people come to discuss gear, not technique.

Those who switched from Canon to Nikon may be concerned that Nikon's recent success has waked a sleeping giant. 5Dmk2, 7D, 24Lmk2, 17L T/S all show that Canon means business. Right now I'm glad I stayed, and I may well add a 7D to my 5D's. I may be a conspicuous consumer, but I need to enjoy making a living, and I welcome any tool that makes that easier, especially when it comes at such a reasonable price.

I just found out that the 7D has a quiet mode and that the shutter is whisper quiet when using this. The frames per second drops but is still very fast. For my visual anthropology I was glad to read this.

far from whisper quiet in that mode. I thought it would have worked better (not that I care about that feature).

I guarantee that within about 6 mos you will see a bunch of 7D's for sale here as everybody jumps for "the best next thing". All of this hootin' and hollerin' and most of you haven't even seen one yet.....let alone actually used one. Is this a joke or what? If you really are making a living with your images and then do this kind of thing, I hope you are making better business decisions in other areas of your lives....!

Send them to the US - they're already spoken for, I'm sure!

If they in fact haven't missed the boat....great. I'll maybe buy one. But I'll have a few months worth of user experiences to draw on to make the decision. And, I'll have used one first. Plus, I'll get it cheaper because within a couple of months somebody will unload one for the next magical photo tool and it'll be mine. My point is best illustrated by the post above where the user couldn't hardly wait to get out of the store to take some pics (and I guess draw some conclusions?). Do they put catnip in these things....or what?

In the same vein as some of your presumptuous assertions here, I believe that you WILL determine several months from now that Canon has not missed the boat with the 7D.

Buying used is not necessarily a bad idea. I just bought a used 1Ds. There are pros and cons to it. There are also opportunity costs.

The opportunity cost of waiting is not using the camera, not gaining experience with it, and missing shots you would have otherwise taken. I have a 7D on pre-order.

Being a bit presumptuous here, do you buy everything used?

Do you buy used cars? Do you sell them?

You could be honest and simply admit that even before hitting the street that the 7D is better than the Nikon D300S.

Manual mentions we need a 3.5 MM Jack for Mic input to record stereo.

Ill be doing mostly wildlife with this and was thinking a directional mic might be the right direction.

Anyone have any experiance that might point out good manufacturer choices?

I'd be interested to learn more about directional microphones too, as I'd also like to shoot wildlife. I did go ahead and buy the Rode Stereo Videomic, but I don't believe it will work well for distant sounds.

We also need to have Magic Lantern ported from the 5Dmk2 to the 7D so that we can get around the current AGC limitation.

Keep us posted on what you learn about directional mics.

Yes, you are right, this was a stupid comment, interesting indeed how people need to defend their choice of going with a brand or another. This is also the case if you go through the Nikon forums here or, even better, if you are really bored, go to dpreview forums.

Lighten up, dudes... did you not see the tongue-n-cheek smiley in my post?

There are some minor differences between the D300S and the 7D.

But at the end of the day, it's not the camera which creates stunning images. It's us.

I've got some 40-50 y.o. bodies that I still enjoy the hell out of. Some of them will make better images than 90% of the new stuff, but they are a lot less convenient. But, I hate having to go back down in the darkroom and clear out the cob-webs and now my wife thinks that area is for storage and it's getting crowded. And my computer smells a lot better than the darkroom!

I love the smell of fixer in the morning.

Actually having worked in my own dark room and at a commercial one, I do enjoy the smell of fixer due to the memories it brings back.

I got notified that a 7D preorder is ready for me.

Hmmm, did you take this same approach when all the nikonians were wetting themselves to get the first digital SLR ever made by Nikon that actually bested a canon dSLR? Yes, I of course am speaking of the D300. There were tons of nikonians who jumped in on day one, so I don't believe it is a purely Canon fanboy phenomenon. In fact, the release of 7 year's worth of pent up angst turned into a feeding frenzy. Now that Canon has built a better body than the d300s, the tables have turned and you are obviously NOT, in fact, amused.

Methinks the lady doth protest too much

And so as not to be confused as a mindless Canon fanboy, I was very much disapponted with Canon's apparent indifference toward the d300 and d700 to the point that I had worked out the logistics of switching. I was one of those vocally thrashing their complacence when the 5dm2 was announced. Lucky for me, I came to my senses and realized that the extra $2500 it would have cost me was not worth it. Seems like that was a bad business decision avoided, and I don't recall you pointing that out to the new nikonians over the last 2 years.

BTW, there are plenty of bridges where your presence would be more appropriate
