I picked up mine tonight as well and laughed when I saw your post. I spent 10 minutes doing the exact same thing
Bet there will be a ton of "Help Me With The 7D AF Settings", "What Settings Do You Use For Your 7D AF" and "What AF Settings Should I Use On My 7D"
coming to FM sooner than later

I've got a quick snap of the cat, but to be honest I was pleasantly surprised at the result. I really wasn't expecting the high ISO to be this good. ISO 6400 will definitely be usable for me. Straight jpeg from camera with standard settings, although I did manage to get the high ISO noise reduction disabled in camera. It may not be better than a 5DII, but I think it might top my original 5D! To me the noise has more of a film grain like appearance than any other camera I have used. Now if the BIF testing can produce the same results with respect to focus I'll be delighted!
Having to buy every new model that comes down the pike is questionable....progress is progress though and some upgrades are worth it. The issue lies with the decisions to abandon gear that already works for some that is unseen. I'm all for buying a new model that will allow me to improve my product, but why would I sell the tools that make me a living before I even get a chance to use anything new ( let alone invest in it). The frenzy pitch here gets ridiculous. Anyone who would dare question a new product in a review is usually branded an incompetent or worse....and the cult marches on.....all the while ignoring the issues of technique. I find it wildly amusing! ...Show more →
Ummm, this coming from a guy whose profile says he/she has a D3X and D700? I hope the $10,000 dollars you've invested in camera bodies wasn't a waste because of the talent you already have.

I guarantee that within about 6 mos you will see a bunch of 7D's for sale here as everybody jumps for "the best next thing". All of this hootin' and hollerin' and most of you haven't even seen one yet.....let alone actually used one. Is this a joke or what? If you really are making a living with your images and then do this kind of thing, I hope you are making better business decisions in other areas of your lives....!
Well, I guess you told us. And no, most of us don't make a living from our love of photography. If we are a joke to you, just pass us over like the trivia you filter every day. Many of us care deeply about improving our craft and the tools we use are critical to achieving the best we can. We are not all Adams.
If you want to add value to the conversation, I would suggest you study the endless volume of helpful information that our most valued contributors give to us freely on a daily basis, the value of which we can not measure and can only say thank you. If this is your contribution, I think you can find a place where your value is more appreciated. Please spend your time there.
Sorry to the other members that may not agree with me, but this post hit the wrong cord with me.
EDIT: I went straight to my response from this post, without looking to what others had already said. Now I feel redundant. My real point is, FM is a great community of knowledgeable people, who really help the rest of us. Don't disrespect the principle of what we are about with comments that add no value.
Fine looking kitty. Alas, since I only like to print the left eye of my subjects, that noise at ISO 6400 just won't do for me.
Some of us conspicuos consuming guppies just might be looking for a tool to give us better results. No doubt one could wait and the price will drop. One can wait some more and something better will come along. I suspect in 10 yrs, the Mk V or the D3XYZ will be going for pretty cheap. Meanwhile, I'll take a shot at this and hopefully be taking pictures and making money with it this week. That situation doesn't fit everyone nor do I begrudge those that think it better to wait.
Not everybody here buys the latest and greatest every time. Some camera releases don't do it for whatever reason. For me and many others, THIS camera seems about right at the price point and capabilities. The smart business decision is to pick the right tool for the job. The camera companies realize that obvious fact and make products accordingly.
Not sure I like that color mess in the shadows, but probably fixable in PS with RAW. Thanks for posting and pretty cat.
Sheesh, it's 6400! The original 5D didn't even *do* 6400, so I'm sure the 7D is better.
Clearly there is "normal" NR being applied here, but I believe the poster wrote that he had disabled "High ISO NR", so at least some of the chroma noise seen there can be attributed to that.
Built-in flashes have the known limitation of overheating and recycling times. Therefore, my opinion is that, when it comes to sustained shooting, the Integrated Speedlite Transmitter on 7D has some serious drawbacks compared to the classic ST-E2.
Of course, I might be wrong. Here is the question: how is the Flash Commander on Nikon bodies behaving in similar conditions?

However, to act as a master it merely has to emit patterned pulses at very low power. It's not nearly demanding as normal flash operation.
