Congrats on the new acquisition.

Looking at the lenses in your profile, perhaps you would be inclined to report on the (un?)suitability of the screen for manual focus?

I guarantee that within about 6 mos you will see a bunch of 7D's for sale here as everybody jumps for "the best next thing". All of this hootin' and hollerin' and most of you haven't even seen one yet.....let alone actually used one. Is this a joke or what? If you really are making a living with your images and then do this kind of thing, I hope you are making better business decisions in other areas of your lives....!

I think you're wrong on this one. The 5DII 'pre-sold' like hotcakes, and has been selling like crazy for almost the last year. How many used 5DIIs have you seen for sale? Not many I would guess.

The 7D is in a way a landmark camera for Canon. The other landmark DSLRs were IMO the D30(the first), the 1D, the 1Ds, the 10D, the Digital Rebel series, and of course the 5D addition to the xD series. The 5D set the stage for the later addition of cameras to the xD line. The 7D is just such a camera.

The 7d has solidified a new segment in the xD line. It has a redesigned sensor that not only offers gapless microlenses like the 50D, but also has a new photodiode design (no data), and redesigned lower noise preamp circuits(laser trimmed, metal film resistors in the CMRR circuit - not a clue folks). This is what allows it to have such good noise performance at almost 54,000 pixels per square millimeter density. In addition it offers a movie mode that has enough features to endear it to many PJs IMO, and it's the first movie mode on a DSLR to be this comprehensive. Add to this 8FPS, better AF(I assume), better build and weather sealing than the xxD series, larger ISO range with good high ISO performance, programmable buttons, 100% frame coverage with 1x magnification, wireless multi-flash support, etc, etc.

I think it will be some time before you see any great number of used 7Ds on eBay or the B&S forums.

BTW, canonical, are you a switcher? I ask because canonical is an odd handle for a Nikon user to have. Or are you called canonical because you are an ubuntu fan?

Which CF memory card?

I've looked around and can't quite figure out which speed CF card is needed - I got the UDMA part but there are a variety of cards that support it.

Extreme Pro 60MB/s (big price jump)
Extreme IV 45MB/s
Extreme IV 40MB/s
Extreme III 30MB/s

Which one would be fast enough for the video as well as the burst speeds?

Just to be clear on the actual speeds of the cards referenced above:

Extreme Pro is 90 MB/s (600x) not 60 MB/s (400x)
Extreme is 60 MB/s
Extreme IV is 45 MB/s

The store I got my 7D from said they had about 6 left after preorders for in house customers and someone posted they had the 7D and it sold out in an hour from web orders. Darn web. :^)

Well I will have it tomorrow along with the 100 macro IS. I will be curious how the 7D does with my 200 f2 and tracking. The 200 works fantastic with the 2X TC II so the reach should be nice on the 7D vs my 5DII. I will let a friend try it on his 800L with a 1.4TC. That should be some reach for birding and some quality!

The manual says an 8MB/s card is sufficient for full resolution video. I recorded a short video last night using a Sandisk Ultra II (16MB/s I think) and the card had no trouble keeping up with the camera writing to it or playing the video back on the PC from the card.

The Kingston 133x cards supposedly work well and seem to be pretty popular. 32Gb card for $70.

As mentioned, you don't as much speed as some thought for video, but I would go for at least 20-30MB/s for non UDMA cards and 30-45MB/s for UDMA cards. Why? I haven't a clue. It just seems if your going to spend more money, you should get something for it For the fastest burst rate and buffer refresh, a UDMA6 card is recommended by Canon. This is not to say that a particular brand of UDMA5 card might not beat another brand of UDMA6 card in the 7D. We need some empirical testing to establish that. Hopefully the RB site will have some 7D CF card specs up in its database soon.

Look at: http://www.canon-europe.com/cpn_eos7d/

Click the 'Technical' tab at the top left, go to page 4, and look at 'Memory card choices' on the left for UDMA recommendation. BTW, UDMA6 cards are EXPENSIVE, so I'd wait for the RB database to updated before dropping too much coin on them.

I have a few Kingston 16gb 266X cards and when you can get them on sales they are well worth it especially having firewire II. Still my favorite are SanDisk, but the price of the big cards is.....well....steep.

7D GRIPS

My dealer called a few minutes ago stating they expected the 7D grips in this Thursady. Initially I read they would not be out till November.

If you probe profiles, you may discover that brainiac's moniker is entirely non-baffling. I also find it apt considering the way he presents his reasoning/arguments.

And... I would not really consider my input to be a "guess." Are you going to explain the etymology, or are you going to (try to) taunt us?

I got my 7d yesterday from Jessops in Brighton (England). Last day of the "preorder offer" throwing in 2x Sandisk extreme III 8gb cards (not the latest, but fine for landscape), an extra battery (always essential with a new body) and a voucher for a canvas print (personally I prefer good quality paper, but hey! it's free!). More to the point, Jessops honoured it , so I walked away with about £200 worth of extra bits (well maybe £150 in a few weeks time). Made up for the enormous dent in my credit card ...

Anyway, took it out with me today, a few pics of Preston Park first thing, then, after work, cycled up to Devil's Dyke for the view. Later, a walk with my partner and got some sunset pics. Just downloaded the results to my computer - nothing visible, then discovered that Canon haven't yet released the Windows Raw Codec for the 7d snarl ...

Still, the new version of DPP features controls to reduce (or increase) highlights and shadows - a big improvement and gets round the lack of support in Photoshop Elements 6.

Early results look promising. No low light pics yet, but I'm really a landscape guy and I usually take my images in daylight. We shall see.
