2). They may as well get rid of the xxd series because none of the improvements fro the 7d (vf, af, etc. ) are ever going to make it to the xxd series... There is going to be a stunningly large gap between the top level rebel and the 7d with no feature differentiating product to fill the gap.
That's a contradiction: if there is a large gap between rebel and 7d, then they can fill that gap with the xxd line. Only if there is not a big gap will there be no need for an xxD.
Relax. None of us believed that they would make a non-1 series with pro AF, and it appears they have.

and to think people thought canon "learned" because the G11 had less MP
the only really good thing about this 18mp small sensor body is the hope it brings that perhaps in a few years canon will put a larger sensor in a similar body with pro-like AF at a 5d-like price.
Between this and the 5DmkII canon could not have come any closer but ULTIMATELY BUNGLE & limit the final product from greater capability (5D2 af system limit, 7D MP overload on small sensor)
Yeah kinda agree. Disappointed where Canon is going. Seems they are more interested in protecting their own lineup than competing with Nikon.
I do love my recently purchased 50D and glad the 7D doesn't give me a reason to upgrade.... but as mentioned that is what Canon should be striving for, us to upgrade to better cameras.
To those complaining about the 5D's AF, I'm curious how it compares to the AF ability of the EOS-1 and EOS-1n (not 1D or 1V). The 1 had only 1 AF point and the 1n had only 5. Were the 1 and 1n more sensitive, or does the 5D function similar to the older AF pro bodies?
I'm very relieved that this time round Canon haven't repeated their "Evolution" ad campaign like they did for the 5D2. I don't think I could stand that again.
Stating the obvious here, but the success of this camera will be largely determined by price. If (as rumored) it's priced in the $1500-1800 region to compete with the D300 and its variants then Canon will sell a bunch of these - not only to xxD owners looking to move up, but to FF owners looking for a second "sports/wildlife" body. If we see a price in the mid $2K's like the 5D2, however, I believe the interest will be much more subdued.
Personally I am unconcerned by high ISO noise (I have a 5D2 for that kind of shooting) and am very intrigued by the possibility of f/8 AF. If the price comes in at the low end I may very well end up getting one of these as a 2nd body.

Please, please... let it AF at f/8 (not likely, I know)
That's all the next xxD would have to do to get me to buy it...
Mind you, I wrote about wanting that as the "must have" update of the 50D over the 40D before the 50D was released, and we didn't see it then either.
I understand that there are solid physical design reasons why this would be hard-to-impossible to implement in the current design of xxD bodies - it's not just a firmware thing.

Agree with you totally. By the way, you can get a used 1D3 for about $2600 US, however, you don't get hd video and 16MP(could be good or bad, but probably bad since 1D3 is great at high ISO)!
So, with this new APS-C pro sport camera, I am guessing that the new 1D4 is going to be a FF, with like at least 16MP.

If this camera is using the 1D Autofocus, which obviously is capable of f/8 focussing, it'd be an exceptionally cynical move to deliberately leave it out.
But I think Canon really wants me to buy the 500 f/4

Traditionally the XXD of the time and the 1D share the same megapixel count (20D and 1DII at 8.2, 40D and 1DIII at 10.1) so I'd think the 1DIV would be going for 18 (or 15?)

Of course it does, Hell I want to buy a 500 f/4 and I don't even have a use for one!! But I can't imagine they'd think you're more likely to buy a 1D just to be able to autofocus your 400 5.6 with a 1.4x, it's quite a leap of faith to think not implementing f/8 focussing will 'protect' the 1D lineup.

about the 500. The funny thing is that the pro's are probably far less likely to use AF at f/8 anyway. They can afford the big guns and don't want to suffer the IQ penalty of a TC on a f/5.6 lens.

Guys, seriuously, lighten up. This camera hasn't even been announced, nor do you have ANY information other than your "best guess" as to how "bad" the sensor will be. How about waiting to see the evidence before you convict? The D300 blindsided Canon, and it took them 2 years to answer - but it absolutely appears that they have. That's a GOOD thing, and not a reason to express "disappointment".
They were also obviously blindsided by the d700, but if you extrapolate what we've seen you might expect to see a 3d in the next year. You might not, but jeez, at least put your bitching on hold for a while.
I am not a fanboy, but holy cow at least they answered in 2 years - noink took 4 to answer the 5d and 6 to come up with something better than the 10d.

+1
Plus it feels like they blind sided Nikon this time if the specs are true. The D300s is not really an answer to the 7D if the 7D's higher ISO are decent.

Nothing has been answered until we see how well things perform. When Nikon answered, they did not take any short cuts and came out strong with their current generation of cameras. Hopefully Canon does not behave like Canon of old and cripple some feature. Now hopefully Sony keeps the heat up on both Nikon and Canon and we start to see reasonably priced full frame cameras start to emerge.
