18mp on a crop body will be great IQ at high ISO.

1800 tenthousapixels. That's got a nice ring to it.

Dang, its a crop with over 18 MP's. They must have made leaps and bounds in noise control since the 50D was realeased. I sure hope the noise will set a standard for crop bodies. Granted, the new features will be really nice, but this sucker had better be at least 75% of FF performance.

and to think people thought canon "learned" because the G11 had less MP

the only really good thing about this 18mp small sensor body is the hope it brings that perhaps in a few years canon will put a larger sensor in a similar body with pro-like AF at a 5d-like price.

Between this and the 5DmkII canon could not have come any closer but ULTIMATELY BUNGLE & limit the final product from greater capability (5D2 af system limit, 7D MP overload on small sensor)

don't laugh. I'm selling my 24-105 today because the new 15-85 efs is going to be one detail resolving b.a. To be announced the same day as the 7d.

19 Cross type AF points.....does that mean it's got the 1DIII AF system minus the assist points ?

I will be happy either 1.3 or 1.6 as long as 3200 iso is clean.

Also....do we KNOW it's a crop sensor ? 18MP FF would go down extremely well.......

With these specs.....+1! If it's useable at 3200 I'm getting one massive leap over the 40/50D (from my perspective) - this camera will be the end for my much loved 30D.

The 1D area AF which is 8mm x 15mm would cover a lot more of the VF on a 1.6x crop. I wonder if they have done that. I thought I read somewhere a few years ago it wouldn't be feasible as the outer sensors would be getting mainly peripheral illumination which would affect their performance. Then again I might be imagining that

Hard to believe that is a 1.6x crop sensor.
With 18MP?
I don't know about that...

I think the reasoning is that the lens in picture looks like it's the EF-S 15-85mm

I can't believe this thing will have good noise control if it is 18mp on a 1.6x, maybe equal to the 50D and thats it.

If using DIGIC 4 I don't expect any great improvements in high ISO image quality, not in RAW files. JPEGs might be improved via software algorithms.

18 Megapixels in APS-C seems overkill and this is suprising. Given the target market (sports/wildlife) I would of thought 12 Megapixels in APS-C was about right.

Shame it is not APS-H based, but this would be too close to the 1D series I expect.

100% viewfinder, very nice.
AF sounds excellent (if not crippled in some way, I don't expect so)
Dual slot? Can't see that mentioned but was in rumours, maybe confused with dual DIGIC.

Overall this looks like a direct response to the D300 with a couple of clear marketing features to distinguish it (full HD video and 18 megapixels).

Looking forward to the full spec and reviews of the camera.

Sean

I was hoping for a better FF camera sooner rather than later, but I guess we'll have to wait a few more years.

I so wish they had made a "D700-like" instead of a "D-300-like" camera.

It's being released with 2 EF-S lenses. How could it not be 1.6 crop? And look at the tiny prism housing.

I get the impression that with every bump in resolution, people state that it can't have good noise control.

It looks like a 1.6x camera to me, otherwise the box will for sure have a big "FF" slogan on it. the lens look like one of the new EF-S lens as well. It is the first 100% VF on a APS-C....hope it is really 100%. Canon for sure target this camera against Nikon D300/D300s. It is every bit better in spec, and i am thinking what is the price going to be. The Nikon D300s is $1800 US and I think Canon will be within +/-$200. The two new EF-S lenses are pretty boring, and f/5.6 at 85mm? Are they copying the Nikon DX lens lineup??
