So don't be surprised if nothing shows this coming weeks
But then what do I know It's just another rumour
And the magazine admit they got it from a blog Magnus blog. And Magnus Fröderberg who has the blog also admit that he don't have a clue what Canon will release
The boys in white labcoats are playing darts. There is a picture of Rob Galbraith plastered over the dartboard.
You're funny man!
Seriously though, if canon make a 16 megapixel 40D at the same price point as the D700, for all the furor in the forums that it will cause, they have a pretty simple answer and I can't really fault them for it. "Do you want resolution or pro AF?. If the answer is resolution then this is the price you pay, you won't get more resolution for under the price of a 1Ds mkIII". Isn't that the same thing they did with the whole 5D/D200 thing?
What is interesting is that I just noticed that the 1D mkIII is £1000 more than the D700 and I just can't see what is worth £1000 more, the D700 has FF or crop, 2 fps less (same as 1D mkII and who complained?) and is smaller. Even having to pay for a new shutter to match the rating on the 1D won't bring the price near. The D700 isn't just a 5D beater, it's almost a match for the 1D mkIII and i'm sure that it has made many people go 'hmmm', especially those pros who need two or three bodies and it's their own money...
Seems to me that Canon will say that the 5D was never intended to be a pro camera, pro's can use it with pleasure but don't whine that it doesn't have pro features. It was made as a amatuer high resolution machine, nothing else. They will say the same with the new one except this time it will have even higher resolution, landscape photographers rejoice but don't winge that it won't do sport. Heck look at the lenses, Canon mid level equals amatuer, the 17-40L, 24-105L, 70-200f4L, all slow but high quality lenses, all not designed for pros. Canon says that midlevel does not equal pro period. That the camera and those lenses are used extensively by pros is immaterial, at the time there was nothing else if you couldn't affo5rd a couple of 1Ds mkII's.
Nikon have said that their mid level camera is a pro tool for all but anyone with serious niche needs such as sports shooters and those who really will hammer the heck out of their cameras. Oh and it's the same price as a 5D mkII. You choose, resolution or features. Then of course Sony will bring their FF 25 megapixel camera with 5D like features and a similar price and canon will have shot themselves in the foot but that's another story.
Rumors say that the new 5D will share the same AF system with the 1D3 MKIII and 1Ds3 MKIII. If this turns out to be true than I guess that, as long as I'm concerned, the new 5D is doomed even before it hits the shelves.
And if they don't then it's as doomed , I think that Nikon have truly trumped them for the next couple of years. What canon does have is a huge userbase who can't afford to switch and that may just carry them through till their next iteration of bodies assuming the bean counters at canon have all been taken out at dawn and shot some time in between....

I don't think that is likely to happen at all.
Canon draws rigid lines between their camera models...no feature overlapping.
The 5D successor is more likely to have a 40D type AF system which has been hopped up with a few auxilliary AF points.
Otherwise, the camera will probably have an 16 Mp FF sensor, packaged in the 40D body sans the popup flash. It will perhaps be priced around $3,799......well, as we all know full well by now, Canon FF sensors are extremely expensive to make.
Come on guys, let's be realistic. The price will not be that high, and they will not weatherseal it anyway. Yes, it will be between 12 and 16MP, hopefully with ISO 6400. It would be nice for weathersealing, but honestly if they put cross sensors out on the periphery, and also the custom function that lets the wheel by the shutter be used for aperture in manual I would be happy.
Honestly, the d700 has some great specs, but a couple of things are bugging me. For one, they don't seem to suggest it is truly rain resistant, at least the terminology I've seen is as strong as that. For another, the cross sensors are all in a cluster around the center, which seems like a waste.

The d700 beta testers and the comments so far indicate that it is quite rain resistant. And i expect that a canon equialent is the same. or else :P
When I wanted to make coffee this morning I put the yesterdays filter to the litterbox. Still drunken I struggled and it fell to the floor. I watched the symetry in the mess and had an enlightment:
The new 5D will have 16 MP, enhanced Iso 12.800 with noise like 400 now. Image quality will be best seen ever and leading for the next 5 years. An enhanced all cross sensitive AF up to 5.6, double as fast and accurate like 40Ds will be given to us. And full weather sealing like the 1Ds, of course. 8 FPS will enjoy all of us. Its innovativ award winning design will fit perfectly in my hands and it will be priced at € 2.200 when introduced.
And because of this post Canon will take my 30D back for € 1.000 and accept one of my future pictures to make the missing rest.
I cleaned the floor with a big smile and thanked the universe for that great start into a fantastic day. Think I will have some more beer this evening again.
My first DSLR D60 was replaced by 10D within less than that (when I remember right). After they created "digic I". If sales do not reach what is expected, prices went down (we already have) and a NEW leading horse (within a field) will be introduced.
450D already has 12 MP and digs imo from 40D sales. Next step could be 50D with crop and 12 MP. Or they already might think about the logic step. To put together 40D/5D and make the midrange FF. Than we would have 4 Levels: intro, consumer, semipro and pro.
I would love to see the 5D at $2,999.00. But I think the starting range will be just like the first 5D....$3,499.00. But be patient my children.....you've all seen how the 5D has dropped in price since first being introduced. You just have to wait for a year and a half to get it at the price you want.
