I would love to see the 5D at $2,999.00. But I think the starting range will be just like the first 5D....$3,499.00. But be patient my children.....you've all seen how the 5D has dropped in price since first being introduced. You just have to wait for a year and a half to get it at the price you want.

I would agree if the d700 wasn't released. That set the expectations for a $3000 FF camera to have true pro features, which IMHO the 5d replacement will not.

Ralph, I also replaced my D60 within weeks, it was very very awful as a camera even if the chip was revolutionary. My 10D put in 2 good years of service shooting weddings, I had a 1Ds for only 7 or so months before I sold it for the 5D and haven't looked back since!

That 450D really is a very great camera, a beginner friend called me to ask if he should buy a 2nd hand 20D, had to tell him that the 450D has better IQ, better AF and everything else is at least as good. If you don't need the back wheel (I do) and a stronger body it's a no brainer!

Nikon really has thrown down a price gauntlet, if the only feature that the canon has to compete is a couple more megapixels they will be in big trouble if they try and sell it for more. I remember that the big sales of the 5D, the era when it gained its icon status was well after the release. Only when the prices normalised did it become so very popular. Many like me bought the kit and sold the lens to gain a 'normal' price while being an early adopter.

I'm sure we will see a 1DMk IV and 5D Mk II long before we ever see a 50D!

Uhh... it's really hard waiting for the next "5d". I want a FF dslr but want to wait for what's coming.

D700 and D3 are very tempting but with all the lenses I've bought and limited resources, I'm stuck for now.

Does anybody think that we've reached a point where image quality can't get much better? Obviously the new bells and whistles will make it easier for the photographer to achieve the best image possible, but is the best possible image quality already maxed out?

I guess what I'm asking is, is it possible that the best image possible from a 1DS2, 1DS3, 5D, D3 and D700 are all similar... except the better the body makes it easier to achieve the best image?

I mean, an image in focus taken by a camera with 5,000 autofocus points will look the same as an image in focus taken by a camera with 1 autofocus point right?

Yes.
Under the very controlled experiment, they can still prove that one camera can produce better than another. But, it all reality, it comes down to the Photographer himself, whether he got the good shot or not. Now, the game is going to be about which camera is cheaper.

i would agree about a full-on upgraded 50D. but a 40Dn with the sensor from the 450D and some small tweaks to draw attention away from the nikon offerings - just might be possible, even though i'm not in the market for one.

5DII - 16mp, low frame rate, 40D like, $2999 full retail, available soon

Better IQ than the D3/D700, more MP

Fewer features than the D700

Get over it

Canon will sell plenty of this new model.

I think it will be 16mp but I hope it will be 18mp. Mostly definitely MORE features than the 40D .... including a high-def VGA screen like the D700, plus bigger/brighter viewfinder, etc.

Thing is that 13 megapixels are enough for most, although canon may sell plenty of the camera dcmiller is talking about, if they want people to upgrade from their present 5D's, I'm not sure an extra 3 megapixels will be worth double the price. The features of the D700 might well be.

12 megapixels is more than enough IMO ..... but I love to crop my photos (OK, so I am a lousy photographer) and when you crop your photos, those extra pixels are such a blessing! Imagine having 24mp - you can crop off 50% of your image and you still end up with 12mp! And if you love detail (like landscape photographers) and like to make very big prints, megapixels is what you will need.

I've just ordered a 24-105, So Canon better not disappoint me by not releasing the 5D2!

I was considering the D700, But looking at the prices of the Nikon lenses, I decided I will get the 5D2 when It comes out, Or pick up a 5D when the price drops when the 5D2 Is announced!

Canon WILL disappoint you .... as they will probably sell the first few 5D2 units as a kit with the 24-105 lens .... like what Nikon and B&H did!

Proberly!!

Or next week, Canon will announce a 24-105 f/2.8 IS And discontinue the 24-105 f/4 IS, And the resale value will plummet!

FWIW, I've only seen 1 place selling the D700 with the kit lens, Everywhere else only have the body only in stock (Most places still have a couple in stock, Which is surprising!) Down here in Australia.

D700 is a nice camera, But the price difference between the Nikon and Canon lenses is pretty big (Well down here anyway) For example, The Nikon 24-70 is about $700 (Au$) more then the Canon version, The Nikon 70-200 VR Is about $350 (Au$) more then the Canon version, So already thats over $1000 (Au$) more for lenses then you would pay over a Canon, Then the D700 costs $1500 more then a 5D (Not surprising though).

If the 5D2 Is just going to be a 40D/50D With a FF Sensor, I hope Canon prices it accordingly (I hope Canon doesn't think they are going to charge us anywhere near what the D700 costs with a warmed over 5D!!). I reckon the RRP Will be around $3000 (Au$) And a street price of around $2500-$2700 (Au$) when it hits the market in October/November (Assuming Canon announces it a Photokina).

D700 is already selling for around $3400 (Au$) Online (The RRP Is $3999 (Au$) For the D700), So I expect the 5D2 to be well bellow the $3000 (Au$) Mark.

Didn't someone say that Canon is having a sales meeting this week??

Here is what Canon needs do with the new 5D:

16MP - Somewhere they need to trump the D700
ISO - 50-6400/12800 This is a must for Canon. This will be a decision maker for alot of buyers deciding between D700 and the new 5D.
LCD - This needs to be close to or comparable to D700) or it could be a deal breaker for some.
AF - No pro AF (especially with the RG report ), but improved over 40D. Possibly a new AF system from Canon.
Weather sealing - there should be at least a limited amount.
Live View - does anyone really care about this option?
Improved build
4 maybe 5 fps
Image Sensor Cleaning
Digic III (or IV?)
Viewfinder - probably the same - 96% frame coverage

Last, but not least, pricing. Since the new 5D will not be comparable to the D700 spec wise it should come in at a price between $2599-$2899. I don't think the 5D has to out spec the D700 as long as the IQ competes or passes the D700.

Sounds like my coffee reading this morning :-)

I read several times now about Nikon D700 specs the new 5D2 will not match. Maybe somebody could explain me what specs are mentioned?

I see a nice camera, yes. But the only new thing is, that it comes from Nikon at an 3 year old 5D2 price. And it competes against Nikons own 3D. In my opinion it has a great viewfinder and a 1Mio pixel display. But the Image quality of the 3 Year old 5D is still not beaten as far as I can see (and this is 12 bit and still digic II), apart from high Iso. This seems to be usual with a two year younger sensor. What specs are so revolutionary?

The new Canon camera will have a new sensor in higher resolution and same or better IQ. If Canon does NOT put the 1D AF to the new camera, adds the rest of their standard features, weather sealing and a high res diplay, they can not do much wrong.

the MkII doesn't have to outspec or out-whatevah the D700 as long as the price trumps the D700.

if you took the 5D, threw in dust removal, a couple extra weather sealing points, and digic III - and that's it - but sold it for $2000, you'd have a mega-seller, and pros would still have two pro bodies at the top of canon's lineup to choose from if they needed more.

EDIT: me spel bad
