Another bit of info I forgot to mention. The 40Ds are going to be current all through this year. Not that many people were expecting a new version, but rest assured that there won't be a 50D in the fall. The spring is a different matter though.
Thanks for the info, Ben. I've quit looking at the rumors and reading that this was your post, I figured it is time to warm up the credit card.
The 5DII should be an interesting camera, just hoping it's not an "n" version with just little updates and upgrades.
I'm glad I have an account with $5000 ++ waiting for the new 5d.. :P I just hope that it will have a few essentials (for me, and we all know that I can't expect canon to make cameras for me.. :P): weather sealing, spot-metering at af-points, better/quicker af, a stop or two (or three) better iso performance than the original 5d, 4-5 (6?) fps, 14-15 mp and a rugged, solid and long lasting build quality. If something like that comes out, I suspect that I have a camera for the next 5-10 years :P
... Now THAT lens coupled with the 5d Mark II could pull me away from the 17-55 IS/40D combo. I miss the 5D I sold 9 months ago, but not as much as I would miss the IS on the 17-55.
+1 on the Thanks to Ben also. This is great news indicating that the wait is almost over.

One person who is unaware of the current used market going rates does not suddenly cause the floor to fall out from underneath the rest of the market. Current realistic going rate is $1500 or so.
+1
That price was ridiculous and hopefully will not prove to be "too good to be true".

Canon's sales meeting is Aug 7 through 14, so expect to hear official news then. It doesn't look like we will be waiting until the show.
I would think that means either -
1) the D700 concerns them, and/or
2) the 5D sold out faster than expected
With both the D300 and the D700 actually available, it's as bad time for Canon to be without a mid level camera. So pushing the time of release forward does make sense.

The question of course is what will be the difference between the 5D and the 5DII . i do not mean the price but what features are being upgraded.
Canon has only come out with two surpring cameras: the D30 and the 1D.
So 5DmkII 16mp - 4-5 fps and the digic III goodies. Anything more than this is uncharacteristic for Canon.
There will be a smaller body pro camera at some point. But digic III doesnt seem powerful enough for it to happen this year. The 5D has an improved 1D sensor. So I expect the next camra to have an improved 1DsII sensor - 16mp.
The 5D has stellar reviews. Great reviews are money. So I think the 5D line continues.

the 5D wasnt a paradigm shift in the market?
so what dSLRs have been 'paradigm shifts' ? something that totally invented or changed or enabled a new segment? I dont mean more focal ponts or fps in a crop cam, but truly changing things?

New lenses, that's what I'm looking forward to.
I agree I hope there is something interesting in the new lens department. Maybe an upgrade similar to the recent upgrade of the 70-200 f/4IS could be applied to the 2.8 model...Since they put the 35L on sale recently I wonder if a new build of that model may turn up sometime soon...
I think that Canon will stick to its past.....the 5D will be just like it was before....with larger sensor, digic III, maybe 4/5 fps, no waterproofing, I think it will be the same 5D as it was before. Stuck in between the 1D series/40D series. I think Nikon trumped them with the D700 and the 5D was already in production, so that Canon couldn't come up with more features since they were already close to production. I think many will be disappointed with the newest iteration of the 5D. I would be extremely happy with the camera I described above. Heck, I am extremely happy with the 5D I already have.
one last time - if canon is launching the cam now, it was finalized months and months ago. The only thing they could change in three months is the price and the slogan.

The 5D was expected.
The D30 (not 30D) was, surprisingly, a non-pro camera. But to the positive, it showed a amazing 3mp CMOS sensor that would establish that tech as the high end we have today.
The 1D smoked Nikon's performance cameras and led to Canon's market dominance.
Since the 1D Canon has been predictable. That will change when Canon breaks the pattern. But the best bet is the predictable move. Strangely, I win a lot of real bets based on the obvious.

And perhaps enable/disable software features.
I would think the camera hardware was finalized late spring. I would think a more direct response to the D700 would come next year.

One giant step beyond face recognition, the new Artificial intellegence (AI) in the Canon 5D mkII evaluates what is interesting in your viewfinder and selects to focus on what it thinks is the most interest part of the image. Choose from among preloaded picture styles 'ansel adams', 'salvidore dali', 'jackson pollack', and 3 programmable settings for your favorite artists.

I will be a very happy camper if the 5D II is competitive against the D700 i.e. have a similar IQ/feature/price relationship. That's not too much ask, is it?
You mean downgrade to 12.1 Megapixels
Yeah I do hear you 51 point autofocus, ISO 25600, etc.
But if the Megapixels don't increase I'm not likely to upgrade, my current 5D is just fine.
