I agree that a 5D replacement could be introduced at a much lower price than the original 5D.

Could is the operative word there, Jess.

Canon could do a lot of things, but probably won't. The latest 1-Series offerings (i.e. the MkIII's) would appear to be proof that Canon has no intention of lowering their current price points, despite any apparent pressure from Nikon. Coupl'a hundred bucks maybe, but nowhere near the technological 'trickle-down' prices we should be seeing, like the consumer end has seen.

I have a feeling we're stuck with the current price points of anything '5D-like' and above.

I agree with Jeff, Canon probably won't do a lot of things that we think or wish they should/would/could do.

Drops in sales volume & profits is the only thing that REALLY gets the attention of the Canon marketing machine. They WILL sell many 5D Mk-II's (and/or 7D's) at whatever price point they pick for it, and they will pick the highest possible price that they believe will create the volume they want to move at initial release. Price adjustments will come later when they feel it's necessary to revive sales. It's what they do, over and over and over......

Interesting ....

Do you think that this figures:

http://electronrun.wordpress.com/2008/04/04/nikon-dslr-share-almost-equal-to-canons-canon-still-world-1-overall/

and specially paragraphs #2 & #3 can help Canon to move its back to a more market realistic position ??

I means, if the price tag is too high for specs in relationship with the competition ... Canon forget it !!! ... you are going to loose anyway ...

I personally think that in the past, with a monopoly situation as it were, Canon could fix a price in the upper band .... but actually Canon is driven back after the others, and the competition is playing hard ... so they are not anymore free to fix the price ... they have to look very carefully ... and play the choices ... if they have a model that outperform the competition perhaps the role can change a little bit ... but think that Sony is also coming with a 25 MPx FF at a competitive price (torpedo to flotation line in the Canonīs flag ship) ... so ... letīs wait and see ....

.... competition is always healthy for the consumerīs bag !! Welcome

Cheers

The original 5D was about $3300. The 12Mp D700 is $3000 so I would expect 5D Mk II pricing in that area. The question will the new features be worth it. We already know that a new 5D will have the improved pixels of the Mk IIIs but how many of their other features.

I would expect that Canon has had a philosophy adjustment. If not they will continue to lose market share.
