I just don't think that Canon would cannibalize their 1d series to put weather sealing and better AF on their 5d mk II. It would be nice, and this is maybe where a lot of Canonians are switching over to Nikon. It'd be a pity to see just a 5d with a 1ds II 16.7mp chip, and the functionality of the 40d.

cannibalize? Why not? It was done in the past. And itīs normal. The 5D was and still is used by professional photograpers insted of the MK IIs. Because Iso performance was better. The camera was much cheaper and it produced/es great images.

The new sensor will never be the 1 ds II one. That is stuff from 4 years ago, that can not compete. They can not build it into a new camera. Of cause the new 5D will canibalize the 1 series. It did before with 1Dx MK II. Those where interesting for some pros, but they did not make the money. 300D, 350D, 400D and 450D made it. And 20/30 and 5D did. And still lenses does. Friends of me (no pros) own a 40D worth € 1000 but lenses worth 6.000. And more. For pleasure.

What do you think about Nikons D700? It canibalizes D3 for shure. What counts for a photographer is image quality. There is no difference between D3 and D700. Nikon does not care about 10 D3 customers. They can not compete against 75 to 100 D700 buyers.
What will happen is that D3 will make its way to 24 Million (pixel) to compete against 1Ds MK III. And D3 Customers who do not get an affordable upgrade will feel pissed about.

They do :-)
And its good. Because there may be one who might do his job and find an ear.
And who says: "Lets do it! Our goal for the future is to make our customers happy. In any field. Lets ask them." The release button would be there, where it has to be for an average person. And all the others would have to follow.

By giving us direct print buttons?

What about spot linked to active AF?
More than 3 exposure bracketing?
HUD with movable horizon lines?
Grips that are actually comfortable to use?
Built in flash control?

They created Godzilla. That made me happy as a child. And Roland as a man.
Direct print was wich camera? Printer Idiots told them somebody needs it to make better printer sales.

aktive AF? If you are a photographer you only need one. If you need AF. Any more, the camera decides instead of you. This is not DOING a pic
what for? You know the exposure needs
what for? You see the horizon line. That is why we need DSLRs
- flash controll? Difficult. Build in what? If you do no art, its always better not to use a flash. It destroyes any beleavable image. Usefull Iso 6400 and a 1,4 lens does not need any flash. If using one, you are an artist. What flash controlls you are missing?

Spot metering linked to active AF is a very nice feature Ralph, it makes metering much better, "you only need one" is just stupid, just as "the camera decides instead of you"....? The camera doesen't decide any less or more if your spot-meter is at an af point or another.

Bracketing is something many people use, more than the current range is a welcome change for many. It may not suit your style, but it suits many others..

Horizon lines are effective tools in many settings.

I beg to differ... The spot meter is linked to the center AF point. I prefer to select the most appropriate one - it would be nicer to have the spot meter linked to that.

Yes I do - and if *I* decide 5 bracketed exposures is required, I'd like the camera to allow it.

But it makes life easier. That's what the 21st century if for, right?

I meant wireless flash control. The ST E-2 is bulky & expensive.

BTW - nice gallery

The 1D MkIIN has an option of linking spot metering to the active AF point.(CF-13).
I suspect the MkIII's have retained that feature as well.

Yup, Mk3's have it. One of the selling points to me.
Maybe I just want the camera to do it all for me *rolls eyes*

It must be highly contagious, you seem to have it too.

It's not hilarious, it's just wishful thinking. But you know what - I think it is not inconceivable for Canon to declare war on Nikon and put something out that is uncharacteristic of Canon i.e. giving their customers what they want and beating Nikon at their own game. Wouldn't that be great?

I tend to provocate. Its my "special" way of humor I take sometimes.
You are completly right in all cases :-)
I forgot we already passed the millenium border.

And thanks for the compliment. Most is done manualy. I tend to forget using all those buttons and switches, too. :-(

Not much happening there these days, Ulrik.
In one cormer there is a dusty old prototype of the 400DO lens.
A half empty bowl of saki sits on a table.
The boys in white labcoats are playing darts. There is a picture of Rob Galbraith plastered over the dartboard.

According to a Swedish photo magazie, Canons big launch day will be september 22, just prior to Photokina.

http://www.kamerabild.se/nyheter.html

So don't be surprised if nothing shows this coming weeks
But then what do I know It's just another rumour

Yeah, but he writes they'll be *presented* September 22nd. He doesn't say there won't be an announcement earlier!
