well I was convinced these were not going to happen and so I finally pulled the trigger on a new 5D to replace the one I destroyed last year on a trek. I got what I thought was a good price from Amazon of 2099 for the body only. Hmm, if indeed there is a 300 instant rebate off on these things I might have to take advantage of Amazon's thirty day return policy. I feel kinda bad doing that though. On another note the 24-70 would be nice.

Did you follow the conversation? He already stated that he saw it on the list. Ben works at a camera dealer and has always provided accurate information in the past.
I followed the thread. I don't know Ben. I hope the 35L is on the list. I own one now and I highly recommend it if it's something you need. I still don't think the 35L will be on the list however.

IMHO, $2100 is pretty bad for a body-only purchase.
You can get the kit for $2900 from any dealer and the 24-105L could easily fetch $900 BNIB within an hour of posting.
keep an eye on store like BH, they had the history of jacking up prices right before the rebate, as soon as you see the price hike then you know the rebate will soon follow shortly afterward.
That's an easy one. Canon gets more money while making you feel like you spent less. How? Many are enticed into buying with a rebate but a large percentage either don't bother to submit or screw it up (forget docs, miss deadline, etc.).
Mr. Smith says, "Canon doesn't really get MORE money at all. The price increases had nothing to do with a rebate program, otherwise you would see price fluctuations every spring and fall, and you don't. The price changes had more to do with the state of the economy and cost of production (raw materials, shipping etc.)."
You misread. I did not say the price increase had a connection with rebates. In fact, I did not discuss a price increase. I don't give rat's tail about the tiny price increase. I merely commented on how rebates make more money (net profit) for companies. So I'll say it again since you obviously misunderstood: rebates entice people into buying more stuff (subsequently company gets more money). The overhead for rebates is relatively small as many customers neglect to apply for rebates either by forgetting, not following the rules or are befuddled by the process. I hope that's clearer for you.

The last couple rebate programs were instant rebates. No mail in needed
I was in my local dealer again today, told them I will be buying the 70-200 2.8 IS but only when the rebates start. After talking to management for 10 minutes he came back and said "I cannot say when the US national rebates start, but come back here in one week (that will be the 15th) and we may be able to work a deal for you, I think the official rebates might start the following weekend (17th-19th)"
Considering other news here it sounds feasible.
Might want to return that recently purchased 5D, savings appear to be very close indeed.
There is another thread about Spring rebates on another photography site. The original poster has claimed to have seen the pre-release rebate form and said that the Rebates will start on May 18th. Here is his post (Poster Dan Lorth on POTN)
Alright here is the full info. I got my stuff corrected today by my guy, ie he handed me the official canon flyer, so here it is:
His story also matches with the 35L going on rebate. I read two different sources state the same thing. Because Canon never puts the 35L on rebate, I was skeptical at first, but when I read it a second time I now have to believe.
I should also note that Canon announced last falls rebates on October 18th, but made the rebate period valid from October 15th.
Hmm, May 18th being a Sunday, maybe he is mistaken. From the previous rebates, they haven't started on a Sunday.
the 12th (this Monday), the 16th (Friday) and the 19th (next Monday) seem the most logical to me.
Good to see some good rebates on there. I certainly hope the 70-200 2.8 non IS is on the list. I simply cannot spring for 2 lenses, if one is the 70-200 2.8 IS. I'm hoping for 100$ off of the 24-70, and 100$ off of the 70-200.
The downside is, had I bought BEFORE the price increase I would have saved round about 60$ per lens, and my credit card had a 0% apr on all purchases until the balance is paid in full. I instead waited for "double rebates" (am hoping, but from the rumor mill, seems bleak). Maybe I made a mistake that could have saved me a bit more, and had the lenses in my hands sooner.
