Well, I blew it by getting a lens too early, but just returned it, lens box unopened. Amazon said I'll need to return for a refund and then buy the lens again. That just ate up $25.00 of a $125.00 instant rebate.
I just bought my first dSLR, a 5D from Amazon, and it arrived this morning. Then I saw this post. Arrg! I wrote to Amazon to ask how they would handle this and they said that they are unaware of any rebate, but if one does appear, my best bet is to go try to go through Canon since it would be a manufacturer's rebate. Failing that, she said I would have to return the camera for a full refund, and reorder.
If we do get a rebate, I plan to contact Canon as advised. If I have no luck there, I'll contact Amazon again and see if an "on the books" rebate changes anything. I really don't want to have to send it back and rebuy... it would be silly! Has anyone had any luck with Amazon in a similar situation?
On a side note, this seems like a great forum. I'm sure I'll learn a lot by lurking here.
I doubt Canon will do anything for you since their (yet to be officially announced) rebate will be may 18th, plus it is an instant rebate meaning you get the instant discount with the purchase instead of mailing anything in to Canon so Canon will be out of the picture to the consumer anyhow.

I just bought a 40d, should I send it back to get the rebate? DAM, I knew this would happen. It is not even here yet. Where do I see what it is?
Yep, same here. I got it at Amazon so sending it back as a misplaced order (little used, I was very careful and did one test/comparison shoot with all packing perfect).
A trick you can use is to put items in your cart, save for later, and every time you go to your cart it will say price has decreased o increased, so I know when to buy. It changes daily, trust me. I have even reloaded the cart and prices changed on me!
Is there any confirmation for Europe ?
In the whole thread, I did just notice one post, about UK rebates...
I may consider a 24-105 or maybe a 24-70 this time ("may" is probably an understatement here )... so far, I always resisted rebates, and bought only exactly when I needed. This time, I think I will anticipate a little bit. :-)

My chance to get that 17-40L. Hey, 50 bucks is a full tank of gas for my Corolla.
I remember when my old Civic was 20$ to fill up (I'm 25). Now my Accord is close to 50$ to fill up. Isn't that sad?
Canon decided they wanted to rain on my parade. I wanted the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8. Neither of which is on that darn rebate list. Forcing me to spend more money on the 2.8 IS version. What a joke! Darn you Canon!

OK, so we have the rebates coming in. SIGMA4LESS has the 40D for 999$ right now. Are we saying it's going to be 799$, same as XSi!!! Or is S4L a non-rebate outfit?
ADORAMA and B&H at 1139$, but some of you are saying the price may come up at the rebate kicks in, so not to hope for a 939$ 40D quite yet, but maybe....?
I was in Dury's earlier this week, and when I asked if they knew when the next round of Canon rebates was, the salesperson said, "Oh, I'm glad you asked! It actually starts Monday the 18th. Here's the display that's going up for it next week." It was that same image that was posted that loudly proclaims "INSTANT REBATE".
Now, if only that rebate applied to the 5D with 24-105L lens and not just body only...
I bought the 5D/24-105 kit from Dell when they had the 15% coupon and then a 10% stackable coupon on 5/1. On a whim, I just called Dell about the recent purchase and the Canon rebates that are coming out on 5/18. I told him that I didn't want to return (they have a 21 day return policy) the camera but didn't want to miss out on the rebate either. After putting me on hold for a minute I assume to check out the facts, he put in a request to credit my account for $300 which would have to be reviewed before a credit was issued. To my surprise, he was very pleasant to deal with considering I was asking him about a rebate that hasn't started yet. I really hope it goes through.
