That's an easy one. Canon gets more money while making you feel like you spent less. How? Many are enticed into buying with a rebate but a large percentage either don't bother to submit or screw it up (forget docs, miss deadline, etc.).
Canon doesn't really get MORE money at all. The price increases had nothing to do with a rebate program, otherwise you would see price fluctuations every spring and fall, and you don't. The price changes had more to do with the state of the economy and cost of production (raw materials, shipping etc.).

These are instant rebates, not double rebates. I don't know the exact start date, but I did see the form briefly so I was able to remember a few numbers...

Going to that site, it seems that the 24-70 has been on every rebate, and it appears that the 70-200 2.8 has missed the last two.
For some reason though, I think I remember it being cheaper then normal (due to rebate).
In 2005 the rebates were April 15th (a Friday) to July 15th. (a Friday).
In 2006 the rebates were April 1st to July 15th. (both Saturdays)
In 2007 the rebates were May 17th to July 16th. (Thursday/Monday).
2007, the fall rebates ran longer, so the Spring rebates were pushed back. I suspect that's what's happened here. I'd say, probably the 12th( a Monday), the 16th (a Friday) or the 17th (a Saturday), seem like the most likely start date....Show more →
I don't remember 35L on any typical rebate list ...
I don't either, but Canon uses rebates to increase sales on cameras, printers, and lenses they "want to sell more of".
The reasons they "want to sell" a specific lens can change from one season to the next.
It's likely that all these are factors:
-Higher profit margins
-Large inventory to clean out
-Unused factory manufacturing capacity
-Desire to stay #1 in sales volume, greed, etc.
ALSO: Regarding the dates, Pro Photo Supply in Portland Oregon is having it's annual Canon Days event, going May 13th through the 15th. I recall this was during the first week of rebates last year. If my memory is correct (might not be), we can look forward to the rebates starting as early as this weekend or Monday.
OK, I was convinced this would not happen this year so I'm glad to know I was 100% wrong.
The owner of the largest chain here in Boston just called me. He didn't have all the info with him and wasn't too specific on everything but here's what he said....
Canon will offer rebates starting in the next couple of weeks (I can't pin it down more than that). This chain has a big sale this week end and got approval to offer all the rebate prices early. In this case, they're also going to discount the 1ds3 (definitely not on Canon's rebate list) but a show special.
Lenses he mentioned were 70-200 f/2.8 IS, 100-400L, 16-35L, and the 85L. I don't know how much the rebates amounts will be and these prices won't be available to the masses until the rebates start - I'm guessing that date will be the end of May - but for those of you in Boston you're in luck...

Plus the 35L is getting old...ish. Maybe they're going to attempt a 50L replacement soon if they put it on sale now...Hopefully they put it on sale.
I would be shocked if Canon replaced the 35L with a MKII version-- it just makes no sense.
