Early wake up call this morning, James has been after me to capture a sunrise and today seemed like the perfect day. I got up at 5, picked him up at 5:45 and we headed to one of our favorite spots. I've had a number of ridiculously early photo calls lately, but this one was sure worth the effort................
Jim,
this should be printed, framed, and put on a wall. What a story this tells!
Years ago Chandler asked me if I’d take him up in the Cub to watch the sun rise. I checked the weather for the next day and it was perfect. He spent the night and we rolled out to the hangar at 5 am. My Buddy Brian Martin was opening the tower when we taxied out at 6. He loved Chandler and shared the experience with us via the radio. I did the multiple sunrise trick for Chandler and he was mesmerized by the whole experience. I promised James the same flight in the near future. The Cub is such a magical aircraft for experiences like that, whether you are six, or 76.

Thanks Gero, it was tough lifting my head off the pillow, but it was pure heaven from the time I picked him up and for the rest of the day.
And Jim, know that he will be carrying these memories throughout his lifetime!
Acknowledging that I need some panning practice at 800mm with feathered missiles, I'll say I'm quite pleased with the results of the RF 200-800. Local peregrines just 5 minutes down the road from my house.

Priceless, here he was explaining how he wanted to frame his image............
Looks like "J-3" has his composition foundation correct Jim! Of course he has a premier instructor!

Air Traffic Control in this area is a disaster Jim!!!!
DC-Reagan is the real problem. The airport is not situated in a good area for multi style aircraft.
I have noticed a 100% decrease in military air traffic on the "flyway" from DC/MD/VA to Camp David and our military sites here. The "NOTAM" alerts have increased 100% since the tragedy last Winter.
Is your nephew still in the military?
Not gud!

We went to a not so local fly inn +400 km round trip, to see a couple of flights by a Fokker D21.
The D21 was the main Dutch fighter at the beginning of the Second World War.
This D21 is a replica as non have survived the war
It was build with the original plans
It also was heavily used by the Finish Air Force.
Because of the layout it was difficult to photograph visiting aircraft.
Unfortunately the D21 went u/s when he taxied for departure something with high oil pressure, and they weren't able to fix it.
There was also a P51D from the Early Birds foundation from Lelystad Airport
It's called Trusty Rusty and was flown by Bob Winks during the war.
The Mustang is a former Reno Racer at the time called Miss Ashley and was flown by the late Gary Levitz.

Got a call from a relatively new client this afternoon. He asked me if I could be available to capture him flying a Falcon 900 through Star Wars Canyon. We are going to have lunch next week to plan the assignment. Preliminary plans sound pretty enticing, they fly me to California on the 900, I get to my location, we shoot, and they fly me back to McKinney. So far it sounds pretty darn good to me...................
Maybe I could meet you there. I was planning a trip this May sometime. You probably know that Star Wars canyon now has an altitude restriction since the FA-18 crash. There are new spots on the Sidewinder low level route that are popular and I need to explore. I wonder where your client is thinking of. Anyway, sounds exciting.

I see you are making friends with the RF200-800 Jan Arie............Pretty great isn't it?!
Sure, but could be better if you turn everything on my never ending story.
The electronic viewfinder is something I have to get used to.
But overall it's pretty great.

Hi Jeff,
We'll do this in October, going to have lunch this week to begin planning. Never been to Star Wars so I have a lot to learn to make sure this is a success.

Hi Jeff, the restrictions through Star Wars are for the military, civilian aircraft do occasionally fly through the canyon still.

Kevin,
Thanks for the update. The Edwards AFB doc R-2508 Complex Users Handbook is stating 1000' above canyon rim. I assumed that applied to everyone, but it sounds like it may not.
Yeah I've seen shots from people out there who got heads-up on movements for things like privately owned Fouga Magisters and MIG-17s, also a Falcon business jet once. It's rare but they are allowed for some reason, I guess the Edwards doc only affects DoD assets.
The local shooters seem to know when it's happening as well. I believe some of the better spots along the Sidewinder are real hikes as well, too much for those old bones.
