I saw the Concord's last American flight from Dulles Int AP many years ago. My house is 25 air miles from Dulles but it was still largely visible here!

Got my Wings Over Houston credentials and just applied for media for the 2025 Defenders of Freedom air show in Shreveport on March 29/30, 2025. Maybe I can talk Douglas into coming down and hanging out again........I'll buy dinner!

I have always wanted to go to that show for the B52 but it is right at 6 hours from home. How do you go about applying for media credentials?

Hi Joe,

I go to the base commander who I worked with last year. That was the show that I was going to as a "civilian" just to shoot and have fun. My Buddy Kevin Hong introduced me to the base commander, he recognized me from when I shot the B52 over Ross's ranch, and next thing I knew they were hanging "go anywhere" credentials around my neck. Let me do a little research and see what I can find out about regular channels, or if I can push it and go through my channels...........

My workflow is to go to the Media Coordinator of the Event 1st. IF the event coordinator is different from the airport owner( in my area most local airports are County govt managed) I apply there.

I prefer NOT to call or email because many times whoever vets the "mail" junks my inquiry. Face to face they can't.

If the show or event is on a military base, I contact the base Media coordinator.

I would LOVE to photograph a B52 up close and personal!!!

Dan,
on occasion they have had a B52 as a static display at the Joint Base Andrews airshows. I got into trouble one year as I was in a meeting with my boss and his boss in the latter's office when a B52 came roaring out of JBA and up the Potomac. Didn't hear a thing either of them were saying Looks like the next one will be in 2025.

I always enjoyed taking that to DC with me when I had my 300 with the back of the stock sticking out of my backpack when I walked by the old executive office building. Was stopped once to explain...

FYI, and Douglas might chime in on this, he had a special area pass, but I don't think that he shot much from there. I believe he found plenty of great vantage points all over the ramp.

Many times it is just a matter of courtesy. Just walk up to any "official" and ask "Might I enter and take photos?"..Worked for me many times.

2d Bomb Wing Public Affairs is your best bet, they'll be handling media credentials for the airshow. As stated above a phone call often works better than an email. Trouble with Barksdale is the distance from the crowdline to the runway is huge!

That's why these guyz have "the big guns" mate!
I have seen photographers on a small step ladders with a monopod with 500-600mm lenses and their images were outstanding from long long distances!
Even front row access got fantastic images with 500-600mm lenses!

The show and the dinner are very tempting, Jim! Maybe I should plan another "business trip". The 5II is certainly cranking out beautiful images in your hand!

Classified for the moment, but I got a call today asking if I'd consider Europe next year and some rare warbirds air to air. They are working out the logistics and a suitable photo platform (B25). WeeBeeSee..............

I have been following a Taiwanese guy that I met on the Denmark A2A shoots, this guys goes to so many A2A shoots it crazy. He recent got some amazing shots from Greece and Austria. As the boss who runs the Aviation Photocrew told me, in terms of variety of planes, especially fighter jets, Europe offers more opportunities than the US because their air forces are more willing to show off their toys.

I would think the USAF is so adverse to bad press and accidents they would not want to fly with a civilian aircraft company making money on the flight as it may be seen as an endorsement for the civilian operator. The USAF wants to be in total control of flight parameters/environment. They use to work with the Russian air force for photo ops with USAF fighters and the Tu-95 (Bear) flying near US air space. I have been surprised with the working relationship our Buddy Glenn has with the BAs and TBs, of course if anyone could pull that off it would be Glenn. I have often wondered if the higher command new about the photo ops. They may have been upset...until they saw Glenn's photos!

I wish, Jim. I have no media pass to any shows, I just show up really early to get the best position possible, if I don’t buy a paid seating. I know a bunch of people who got media passes and their shots ain’t that impressive, IMHO, .

The same aviation photocrew was able to get two F-22s to fly with them at sunset in canada few weeks ago. i think even if they get the cooperation from the U.S. military, the flights are kind of plain vanilla, vs in europe they may show more angles, climbs and crosses. But hey, I will gladly take plain vanilla if an F-22 flies in sunset!
