I know, it's surprising given all the "leaks" over the last three or four years that indicated they were planning on dominating the market. Seems, as we say here in Texas, "All hat and no cattle"..............
What surprises me, or not, is how the R3 has fallen in value. You can catch it on sale "refurbished" for about $4k. Talk about a nosedive.
Our cameras need a "HUD", heads up display, for capturing fast moving subjects!
I've thought the same and have wondered if the EE-1 Dot Sight from Olympus, or whoever they are now, would be the ticket. I think it works on any camera.

The rain has been good for the landscape, and it appears that it will continue for a few more weeks. Really hasn't caused us any problems, the folks in tornado alley, northwest Texas and Oklahoma have gotten the brunt of the real bad stuff.
James is doing great, we've been working on a lot of projects together. The other day we had an a/c condensation drain plug up and cause a leak. I called the a/c guy and he wasn't here for five minutes before James had his tool bag all loaded up and was standing there ready to help. Truth is, he would have been more help than the clueless a/c guy. We ended up troubleshooting and fixing it after he left. Calling a "professional" these days doesn't mean what it used to. This guy was talking about replacing a pvc pipe, ripping out drywall and our master bath cabinets. The real fix was just cleaning out a couple of clogged fittings under the sink, thousands of $$$$ compared to about an hour of dismantling, cleaning, and reassembling the connections. So much for the"Pro's"...........Show more →
Oh boy dont talk to me about "professionalism" in the trade crafts Jim! We have been enduring a similiar ac problem for 5 years 2 new furnaces and compressor units and the AC temp STILL can't be regulated properly! 3 Different "pros" still tell me I need this and that and only a few thousand EXTRA dollars!!!! I DON"T have a few extra thousand dollars for an obvious screwed up analysis of a 5 year old problem! The old ac unit ran fine for 15 years!!! The old coils were metal so they rusted out and sprang a leak. The new evap coils are all aluminum. I am po'd!
Glad my buddy takes his job seriously! You have instilled in this fine young lad the positive "work ethic"! Very little of that in our Country today! Also glad Texas is enduring the rain. We have swung from record 90F heat to 50F rain in 24 hours!
Stay safe brother!

I had the Olympus Dot Sight years ago, it didn't help me so I sold it. Some people say it helps them. You have to adjust it every time you take it of out you bag. I have some birding friends who use something like that for photographing birds but no adjustment is needed, I forgot what brand. From the time an osprey decides to dive to the moment it hits the water, it's probably 2 or 3 seconds. Finding it in the view finder of the camera with long lens mounted is the first challenge, keeping it in the frame until it hits the water is another. I really had a tough time with both, many many missed shots. The camera's AF and FPS need to be competent, so does the guy behind the camera. I need to do some research on this and practice a lot more.

Where is the "Love!" button when you need it?! Great images Douglas!! I'm with you on the 24MP, just cannot bring myself to drop back. Really bummed that Canon seems to have abandoned their plans for an 80-100MP version of something.
Thank you Jim! A lot of my bird pictures are heavily cropped, I need high MP for it, even at 840mm. I use my cameras for landscape stuff too so I prefer higher MP for that too. If I didn't crop so much so often, I wouldn't really mind 24 MP.

Just fantastic compositions here brother! I am very familiar with ospreys. I go to Blackwater NWR south of Cambridge and there are many there!

Again SUPER images all! I see the 1 osprey is banded.
Dan
Thank you Dan! My osprey pictures were taken at a dam in New Jersey. This time of the year they hover over the base of the dam looking for fish that are swimming upstream to spawn. Sometimes there are 6 or 7 of them just hovering over our heads. Yesterday they dove a lot but came up empty "handed" most of the time, I missed a lot of those dives, just not fast enough. Even when they caught fish, the fish were pretty small compared to what they caught when I was there a week ago. Here are a few from a week ago, check out the size of the fish. People have gotten pictures of one single ospreys catching 2 or 3 fish at one time at the dam. I haven't seen that myself yet.

Doug,
first off, beautiful Osprey images - one of my absolute favorite birds to shoot. If they are circling overhead, you almost can't take your eye off of them for fear of missing that shot. I was just thinking that if you have a friend with a drone, they could simulate the flight and dive and keep you on your toes
We all love our G-Locks, don't we
.
Douglas, unbelievably gorgeous shots...Very nice work.
That last pix is crazy good, on my monitor it's 30" wide and 22" tall, almost the whole monitor, amazing detail, clear down to the water droplets on his/her feathers and the drops off the beak.

Gero
Thank you Gero! Conowingo has been pretty slow, at least in the days I went... Need to shoot more ospreys to practice. The problem is when there are several of them hovering over, I have no idea which one I should keep my eye on, even if I knew which one to follow, I can't hold my 600 F4 lens up for more than like 2 minutes to wait for it to do something before I need to put it down to give my arm a rest. I don't use tripod/monopod 99% of the time for birding, never for airshows. They just get in the way, for me.

Thanks Bill! As you know, the pictures posted on FM are very low resolution. I post some pictures on my Flickr, you can view the higher resolution version, just click the images once or twice to see them in max. resolution. Even after heavy cropping, those high resolution cameras can still yield amazing details.
Drooool Douglas...

You really should head to the Hudson river for the memorial flight before headed East for the D-Day Anniversary...

It seems that the passenger in 10F is a little nervous with the First Officer holding up the MapQuest directions to RDU for the Captain to see.
Nice and sharp, Chas! I wouldn't have noticed the passenger's head if you hadn't mentioned it.
Leaving the house at 2:00 AM on Saturday to be at the gate by 8:45 at MACS Cherry Point. Are you going? I think this will be the longest day trip ever for me to do for an airshow, 750 miles round trip. I will be driving 13 hours that day. But the lineup is worth it..

Thanks Bill. I have never heard of that event on May 17 and couldn't find anything about it by googling. Would like to check it out.
Jim,
Love the photo and memories you are making with your apprentice! Just keep it up, he will cherish those for the rest his life. Just as Annie continues to remind of us of good memories of my folks, it keeps the memories living for generations!
As for all the G-Locker's, dam I have never gotten along with the grip angle; have nothing against the piece other than it doesn't fit me. Just give me a Browning designed piece of history from 1911 and all is good! I suppose 100,000 plus rounds will give you the muscle memory to cement the comfort in that platform and make the transition tough.
