Yeah, good point about not showing up on a paid shoot with a G9, that thread I mentioned notwithstanding. I wouldn't do it either. But for stock, not a problem.

Or you haven't quite figured out how to get the best out of it yet.

I didnt dish out any "bait". I merely stated my opinion to the G9. It's an aweful camera for the price. If it were $100, I wouldnt feel so strong about it. But at $500, my god, its just terrible.

Wow, those are incredible images. Just goes to show you can complain or produce results. Unfortunately some people's glass will never be more than half full. But this guy Darwin's cup is overflowing...

Yep, it's a piece of crap and noisy as all heck; which is of course why this guy uses it from time to time:

Killer G9 images. Simply beautiful.

The G9 looks promising, mostly because it shoots RAW. For me, though, I need my "little" camera to also take decent video for family events, and the darn thing doesn't zoom during video.

The S5 IS would be right up my alley if it shot RAW. :-( I'm on a quest to find a point-and-shoot that allows RAW and zooming video mode. There are few cameras that allow zooming (the S5 IS is one of them, and several Kodaks, like the Z712 IS/Z812 IS) but none I've seen that does RAW, too. :-(

My "main" camera is a Rebel XT with several lenses, inlcuding a couple of good ones ("L's") and my Tamron 18-250. I can get the results I like with my XT - but I have no illusions about what I'd be getting with a G9. I used to own a G5.. these cameras are great as a point and shoot but they can't do what an SLR can. That's why I'm looking for a family point-and-shoot that I can hand to my wife, and that also doubles as a camcorder.

Anyone know of any cameras that do RAW and zoom videos?? :-)

Thanks
-Glenn

p.s. The Darwinwigget gallery looks great. That guy is a lot better than I am :-) However I don't think it validates the camera - his style seems to include very heavy post-processing. Those shots, as great as they are, look very processed to me, which can hide image issues that the camera causes.

"I need my "little" camera to also take decent video for family events"

It does have a zoom during video... but I find the quality drops off quite a bit. I think it's more like a digital zoom if anything, and they never really good anyway. I use it at 640x480 30fps, and I find the video to be amazingly good quality. Best video from a point and shot yet, and I'd put it right right there with consumer video cameras in terms of quality. (It's not GL2 quality, so let's not go down that route shall we)

Yes. Any of the Fujis or Panasonics that have a manual zoom ring and raw. The Fuji S9100, for instance. No IS though. The Panny's have IS.

Back to the G9. Another nice thing is the hot shoe. It works with the ST-E2 as well as flash. Taken with the ST-E2 and a 580EX off camera to the right. The cat we call "crazy boy." Jpeg straight from the camera except for downsizing and smudging out his tag. ISO 80.

I just found another example gallery on Pbase of some impressive shots from teh G9, from someone who clearly knows how to use it. Here's a direct link to one shot, you can jump to the rest of the gallery from it: http://www.pbase.com/cjmichael/image/89708598

Thanks

Todd, the older Fuji's (SuperCCD) had zoom during video - but are you sure the S9100 has it? I could swear that I read somewhere that it didn't.

The S6000fd was nearly perfect, but apparently a little slow in functioning, and I'm not sure I could get one anymore Also no IS, and with a long zoom like that...

The G9 is digital zoom only during video - which is NOT good.

Thanks

The S9100 has a manual zoom ring, so it can zoom in any mode you set it to.

(I used to work for FujiFilm Medical Systems and know the Chicago photo rep fairly well.)

S5 for good video. And stereophonic sound recording.

G9 doesn't zoom at all during video. And the zooming that is set beforehand is optical.

One problem with the S9100, though. It's not much smaller than a Rebel. I don't know of any G9 sized or smaller cameras that shoot raw and have optical zoom during video.

Ah, post-processing. I guess the amount of post-processing Ansel did in his darkroom invalidated his 8x10.

Tom, I hear you on the post processing that Ansel Adams did with his shots. I have a book I read every once in a while to remind myself it's OK to "fix" a shot.

The reason I pointed out the post-processing in the sample gallery was merely to relate that any camera is just a tool, and each has its own limitations. It's good to know what the limits are, particularly before buying, and certainly before shooting.

Regarding the zooming during video... this is the only deal-breaker for me with the G9. It's a shame... but I did look up your recommendations, and found you are indeed correct. The S9100 does RAW and zooms during video, as does the Panasonic FZ-50. Both are quite big, though, but then again, I'm looking at the S5 IS, so they are all in the ballpark in terms of size. It'd be a shame to get a camera that couldn't use my 420EX though.

In any case, I loved my G5... and I got to use a G7 for a bit a few weeks ago. I think it'd be great outside of my need for zoom videos. Oh well. :-(

Good points TVR. The S5 would be the ticket for you if it shot raw. My wife uses an S2 and I'm often amazed at the video quality and the stereo sound isn't bad either.

Onions anyone? Another G9 shot with the ST-E2 and 580EX bounced off the ceiling. I was cooking up some stir fry and thought what the heck? Raw, ISO100, this time with some local contrast enhancement and sharpening.

Edited by TBannor on Dec 28, 2007 at 10:31 PM GMT (Reason: Backed off the contrast and sharpening)

...and the S5 even has a wind filter for sound during video.

Am I that demanding in what I want?? :-)

There are some Kodaks that zoom during video but I hadn't found one yet that does RAW. The Z812 IS doesn't do it, and the V1253 doesn't either. Both have pushbutton zooms (i.e. not lens-barrel based) but still allow zooming during video. No RAW though.

Another issue with all of these, G9 included, is price. I can actually "get" the price of the G9 - it's built like a tank. The competitors, though, don't seem to be, and $500 for a plastic-fantastic camera doesn't seem to add up.
