Just for laughs go to Amazon and do a search for the Pro1. There are new ones listed. The laugh comes when you see the price.
Well there's a sucker born every minute...or so the man said.
I liked it a lot...still have it in fact...and $300-400 used seems realistic. But $1875 brand new borders on insane. Though some went for $900 new in 2003 and that wasn't much less unreasonable.
I only carry 1 dSLR on vacations and maybe 2-4 lenses up to 105 mm....but the Pro1 is always in my kit...just in case something poops out. The IQ on that little thing is very good (at or below ISO 200.) Even did the Oshkosh AirVenture with it just weeks before the 20D came out. With MF it did quite well as the DOF is forever.
I just don't get it, you buy a camera because it fits in your pocket and because you don't want to carry a 5D and all the lenses, then what do you do you go out and get the wide angle add on, then L bracket then the Filters, straps, 580EX2 flash, BH1 and Carbon fibre tripods, umbrellas, gobos, flags, laptops, wi-fi, god what pockets you guys must have, you can't all be from Texas.
Happy Holiday

I'm a 20D user still coming to terms with my G9.
PS wise I don't have much to compare it to except a Minolta Dimage7 from about 5 years ago, apart from that I've been a DSLR shooter. I pretty much bought the 9 for my wife to use to take pics of our new baby, but I find it putting it in my pocket on occasions where I otherwise wouldn't take my DSLR.
At first I was rather critical of the quality, I found the sky noise to high (even on iso80) But I guess comparing it to the silky images of the 20D is not realistic so now when I really want to work up an image, I precess two versions, one with NR cranked up and one with NR off and use the NR part of the photo for sky. etc.
As I said I usually use it for quick photos of the kid, but here are some higher qual. test shots I've done. Love to know what you think.
OK, Kelpie, I just have to ask... what are the beach cages for? I've never seen them but can imagine a couple of reasons for their existence though I wouldn't put a major bet on any of them.

Well they were a piece of living art to represent people around the world being held as political prisoners, but many locals like myself thought they should be kept permanently to lodge the tourists (English backpackers)

hahaha, i love the G9/580EXII pic. I have mounted my II on the G9, pretty top heavy and goofy looking. The 430EX is balanced a little better.
I am pretty happy with my G9 (still use an SD550 when I don't have big pockets). The flash controls are not too pleasing (especially controlling the built-in flash) and I have major WB issues using built-in flash for fill + flourescent ambient room lighting - even with manual WB settings (in my family room). RAW is necessary for these shots.
Video clips are great and the audio isn't too bad, being mono. The playback speaker is VERY nice compared to the SD550. In fact, the built in video works so nice, my digi-camcorder is out on the tripod for Christmas morning for the first time since March.
The IS functions unbelievebly well - I did 1/5s handheld shots that were very sharp. Monopod down to 1/4s. (at full wide angle of course)
The macro mode is great with the manual control for aperture.
ISO works great up to 400, decent at 800 and 1600 is pretty noisy but acceptable if you don't go 1:1. The ISO control on the top should be on every DSLR!
I paid $499 through Circuit Chitty, 12 month N.I.. They have run it down at $425 with 18 months no interest. Threw in a 40D kit at the same time.
I'm blown away by the g9. I have had a long list of Canon slr's since the 10d, and have had several digicams, including the g6. When I first shopped for a compact, carry anywhere alternative to the slr, I was attacted to the f2, hotshoe, and the same battery as my 20d that the g6 offered. Even thought the g9 is missing f2, and has a different battery, I still have to say it was a good upgrade. Cosmetically, its a much better looking camera, and I believe has a much better feel, althought shooting one handed feels a bit insecure. Feature wise, the g9 is impressive, face detect, realtime histo, longer zoom, bigger/brighter lcd and more compact. The UI is exceptional in my opinion, the layout, the control wheel, and the top two dials mean that even after a couple of days, I can operate the camera without looking at it all the time. The integrated lens cap is a step up from the goofy, friction fit gaps prior to the g7.
I'm finding the increased resolving power to be spectacular, useable ISO 400, and seems a noticeable improvement in D/R.
I'll be keeping this one for quite some time to come, but I'll definitely be missing the f2, and the d series battery.

Thanks. Missed on the living art part but was not far off or surprised by the thoughts on tourist housing.

I've been experimenting with the lower resolution settings (8MP and 5MP). The 8MP setting (available as JPEG only) is near-perfect up to ISO 400. Truly amazing results.
Veroman, which combination of recording pixels and compression yields 8,192 kb (8 megs)? I'd like to try the 8 meg setting at ISO 400. Thanks for any assistance.
.... I just saw page 79 in the manual that shows megapixels at various settings including 8 megs, though that information seems to conflict with data shown on page 261, which displays KB available at various settings.

So what did you take that one with?
Why, the G9, of course!
I shot a couple of those just for kicks. Someone on another forum challenged users as to "show me what the G9 can do!" .... so this is what the G9 is capable of .. .
It's a weird feeling shooting like that and strangely liberating.
