i was thinking the price would be a problem. why buy a $10k super FF camera when you only need a fast crop sensor that costs less. Not to mention the workflow. FF files may not be much fun to work with in large volumes.

The only thing that really makes sense to me is that Canon intend to reduce the price of the combined 1 series so that it is not an issue for the sports guys - apparently they have said that they aim for around $5k at some time.
They could also continue the 1DIIN fo a while if the 1DsIII comes in a bit dearer intially.

Dave, I agree.

If canon came out with a 8 fps FF, I'm sure the 1dmk2 would still sell if the price was right. Lets not forget that the mk2 is still one hell of a camera whatever Canon comes out with next.

I'm sure a 8 fps FF would be pricey, but if you want the latest and the greatest, that don't come cheap.

The cost of the processors and so on are falling rapidly. We can judge the cost of the FF sensor from the 5D. Add a bit for the weatherproofing and so on.
If they choose to IMO Canon can do a 22MP 8fps for around $5-6k.
I just don't know if they intend to or not.

DaveMart

Agreed, but the problem for us is that they have no impetus to be reasonable. In this market they are a monopoly, so the cost of manufacture has very little to do with price.

It's good to be the king!

Here is a theory on the combined 1D camera.

It will be 4 fps 22mp or 8fps medium quality jpg.

No actual crop mode. To get the 8fps you must shoot at a lower resolution, but still full frame.

So you can’t shoot 8fps raw (but do the sports shooters want raw?) and you can’t shoot 8fps 22mp (but do the sports shooters want 22mp?)

I suspect the answer is yes, and yes. If something is available (or nearly available), people will want it.

I personally would still rather carry two cameras, one for the speed and one for the quality. Right now, I just want Canon to come out with something new...

Whether or not they actually release anything new, it would be a help if, at least, they could give some indication of when some of the new features of the 400D are going to migrate up the food chain, to the future xxD and xD series replacements.

The latest I heard from a Canon rep, is that there won't be any more new/updates to their current lineup in 2006. Only time will tell, eh?

I have been looking online for information on the successor to the 30D and my guess it will be the 40D. To me, its a decent upgrade from a 20D.

Has anyone heard anything about this coming later this month? Some website are saying its later in September...........but i do not believe it.

We won't see a 40D this year, Im 99% shure about that. Canon released the 30D not even 6 months ago so the chances that it would be replaced within such a small time frame is highly unlikely.

The earliest we will see a 30D replacement would be early next year, But I rekon it would more likely this time next year.

1D Mk II N seems to be capable of doing both.

I really like the 5D, all I want:

- dust reduction like the 400 D because I change lenses a lot
- maybe a few more pixels, how about the 16.7 1Ds sensor
- a split screen focusscreen for manual focussing
- a viewfinder that is not so vulnerable to dust

What you want is (today) still a fantasy. I am talking about reality i.e. what you can buy today.

While fantasy is nice (like this whole thread) it's worth to put your feet on the ground once in a while :-)

I put my feet on the ground with my 5D which to me is the best camera available at the moment. Sometimes I fantasize what would make a very good camera even better.

I think that best camera for the money available at the moment is the 1D :-)

That all depends on what you want. I if you want full frame, if you don't need 8.5 fps, if don't like a very heavy camera than the 1D is not a very good camera at all.
