I'd put my money on a new 370D with a big LCD, picture styles, and a print button. Maybe ISO3200, too. If the 350D sticks around, it will get a price cut so Canon can eat up D50 sales.
Maybe the "legend" will be the new designation for the 350D, which stays around but at a new low price point ($499 body?) and becomes a "contemporary classic" while the 400D (I just don't like the feel of "370D") comes in at $899 with new doodads.
One obvious problem with this is that I would think the $499 camera would be the one with picture styles and a print button.
Anyway, fun to speculate, there's another idea to throw in the mix...
PS: does anyone remember "a contemporary classic, a timeless timepiece"?
PPS: I fear the rumor I have seen that a new "3000D" cheapo will not have RAW - I can give up a LOT of features, as long as I can control aperture and shutter speed and get a basic histogram, but I NEED MY RAW.

I am ready for it. I've just junked....
(1) my dRebel....thus I need another 1.6 FOVCF body superior to my 20D.
(2) my EF50mm f/1.4 USM.....that lens overstayed its welcome in my kit by quite a bit. There is room in the bag now for the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM.
Is the 50mm f/1.2L a rumor or just wishful thinking?
You make fun of the second print button but imagine all of the potential benefits such as replacing the first useless button with something even stupidier. Now that's the stuff that legends are made of!

I tried one, nice, but soft wide-open. I didn't try it stopped down. It was very similar to the 85L.
In size, construction, focusing speed, and amount of light it lets in, it's similar to a 85L; in sharpness wide open, the two are nothing alike. Most of the pics I've seen from a 50 1.0L wide open are very soft; an 85L at 1.2 is close to being its sharpest.
While I have no reason to believe this will happen... I'd love to see a 24-105 2.8 L w/ IS especially since I'm getting ready to purchase a 24-70 2.8L
Hey, they sell the 70-200 in a 4, a 2.8, and a 2.8 IS!
Of course the most amazing thing ever would be a series of EF/EF-S lenses made of a revolutionary chemical composite that makes multi-thousand dollar L lenses a thing of the past. Yeah, I'll let you know when I wake up...

I am hoping for a 24mm f/2 or revised 24mm f/2.8, shoot, I wouldn't even care if it where an EF-S.
Please, let us be reasonable here ....we should not channel Canon into a woodpile......the existing EF 24mm f/2.8 can be an excellent lens....mine certainly is. Other than imperial purple at large apertures and an aged build, the lens is just fine optically.
Instead, let us all form a yogic flyers circle, let us hold hands and and let us chant:
"50 f/1.2L....50 f/1.2L.....50 f/1.2L..."
Okay, who thinks there will be a price drop on the 5D after Photokina? I'd really like to see one as I've got a hankering for one right about now (of course I came to that conclusion AFTER the super-duper rebates).

In the low-end segment, I doubt even marketing folks would call an improved 350D "legendary. This legendary thing must either be a camera that blows the bottom out of the DSLR market (ie: a $400 DSLR), or the new 1D class body.
I think there's a great market for a stripped down DSLR, even if it loses RAW. There's a lot of people out there who want a "nice camera", and the benefit of a (relatively) big optical viewfinder, zero shutter lag, fast AF, instant metering, good shot-to-shot performance, and a "pro look" (to them) are all they want/need in a DSLR. You could give the camera menus like a Kodak P&S and remove meter, AF, and FEC controls and still make the average P&S buyer happy to buy one of those "big cameras".
With the camera makers talking about killing their film cameras off, a super cheap DSLR is exactly what they need to fill the holes in their lineup. Lots of people might see a $200 film Rebel as a good alternative to an $800 350D, but who would buy a $200 film Rebel when you could get a $400 3000D? Even a casual user would earn their investment back within a year or two.
Personally, I'd LOVE to see this happen. The effect on camera forums would be a flood of Green Box newbies asking silly questions, but so long as they expand the SLR market, I'm happy to answer "what lens" threads.
OK, how about this: An all new design, with a modular sensor that can be removed and exchanged, cleaned, etc., sort of like a PCMCIA card, processing engine included. You could have a smaller format, higher-speed, high-ISO sensor for sports and PJ, a super-high resolution (22 MP? ) sensor with increased dynamic range (maybe multiple colors/pixel? ) a la the 1Ds, maybe even an IR sensor module. How 'bout a new mount that allows for one of those sensors to be larger, then an adapter for EF format? Slide 'em out, clean'em up, pick which one you want, slide it back in and you're off and running! Now that might be worth $10K. It kinda gives you pause as to why they haven't been working on any new wides in the EF line. Maybe they have been working on the wide end...
Woops, did I say that out loud? Then again, maybe not, better not quote me on any of that...

Yeah, that would solve a lot of problems. I always wonder if Canon could design a high quality wideangle lens if the price were right, say $2500.

Why would it be that expensive? 24L is same price as 35L and both are f1.4 @ $1100. Unless Canon had to essentially hand build them and take heroic measures I would think for an f/2 it should be well under $2K

Until you see the 1.6kg weight and $2K+ price tag - based on 24-70L design.
