Now I'm ready to buy the EF 50 1.2L sight unseen.
Maybe I'm being overly cynical, but $900 is money that could go towards a lot of things -- and I'd need to see a major performance difference between the two to justify that.
And while it's likely that a 50 f/1.2L would be great, I'd prefer some confirmation of that before giving up that kind of money.
The mixed reviews of the 17-55 EF-S were pretty instructive that a $1200 price tag doesn't guarantee one's money's worth.

Doesn't anyone want to see some MTF and crops and comparisons of a 50 f/1.2L to the 50 f/1.4 before spending $1200?
The 50 f/1.4 is not a lens that people complain about -- it's a great performer.
So I'd be eager to see if the difference between their performance is a $900 difference!
I complain all the time about the 50/1.4. It's is the worst of all my Canon lenses, not sharp at 1.4, noisy, slow and miss focusing and built so it feels like it's about to fall a part any second.
I'm ready to buy that 50 1.2L unseen. I've been waiting forever for one. I just have to find a place that will accept a back order and has a reasonable turn around time. They can keep the 70-200 and 400D as far as I'm concerned. But "Bravo Canon!" on slowly upgrading their primes.
Guess it's eye of the beholder (and budget of the beholder). I'm pretty critical of lenses (and on my view camera I have a couple of stunning Schneider lenses that have sharpness, color, and bokeh that put anything else I've seen to shame). And yet I think my dirt cheap 50 f/1.8 has outstanding color, sharpness, and focusing accuracy (though not speed), and a build sufficient to withstand a lot of abuse on my part. Its deficiencies are largely made up for in the 50 f/1.4.

Exactly. Even compared to lenses like the 85/1.8 the 50/1.4 is relatively poorly made. I would like to it at least upgraded to that sort of design (true USM, lightning fast focus, no moving front element, no mysterious "clunks" inside) but a true L lens with better sealing, and L-prime image quality would easily justify the premium for me. It would most likely take the place of the 35L now that I'm shooting 1.3 crop and get used a lot.
Have a feeling about the 5D - if it was staying and still worth all the money why the extended rebate? Why are some dealers offering it cut-price after tomorrow?
Surely any new Canon is going to be FF - so the 5D is going to be threatened - even if the new camera is 22MP all singing - because this will make the 1ds II fall in price, so the 5D will have to drop too.
If the new camera is FF and lower spec, then the 5D will not have the tag of only non 1-series FF, so it would have to fall then too or people might just get the new model instead if it is way cheaper.
Bit of a pricing restructure on the cards at Canon after tomorrow I would guess...

the only retailer who is offering the 5D at a "cut-price" is Dell and they have had the camera at this price range earlier. As far as the rebate goes, canon tends to have regular rebates offers all the time without permanent price decreases or product replacements. Having said that, I'm hoping canon does drop the price of the 5D, but I don't see it being replaced until Feb 2007 at the very earliest.

They are selling the 5D in S.E Asia for $ 2400 in some shops. And have done so for a couple of weeks. That is the price without any rebates or discounts.
Whatever new camera is introduced will have an effect on the pricing or at least sales of the other cameras.
If they bring out a FF it will be interesting. At the moment you have 2 choices - 1Ds II for £4500 or 5D for around £1500, so if a new player comes in at £1100 or even £2000 then the 5D may get overlooked by potential buyers who at one time had no other choice.
I wonder what the release of 50 f/1.2L glass would do to the market for the collector's items 50 f/1.0L.
I don't think that 2/3 stop will be enough to justify any price premium given that both lenses are L glass and the new 50mm presumably has other design improvements.

My guess is the price won't change much. It's a collectors item.
Ugh, canon is really screwing with my plan now. $600 probably to take my 70-200 f4L to the IS version. Instead of $300 for the 50mm, it will be $1500. So that's $1800 over my original budget.
Maybe the performance and size of both will be terrible... yea, that's it.
I've been reading mixed "predictions/leaks" around the new 400D on this being a full frame camera. However, the chineese site link indicated that it is supposed to work with all canon lenses, including the EF-S, so I don't see how this camera could be a full-frame body > having said that I'd love to see a full frame body in the $1100 range - even though it does have the build quality of a rebel - it would instantly become the first rebel i've bought despite shooting with EOS cameras for around 16 years.

You're going to pay list, so I suggest a small camera store. I get the new, wait list items this way. The large internet retailers are the worst for these type of items.
Neighborhood shops usually don't have commercial relationships anymore, so it's possible to really be "first in line". A larger shop has many people to take care of before the "first in line" get's his stuff.
