The mixed reviews of the 17-55 EF-S were pretty instructive that a $1200 price tag doesn't guarantee one's money's worth.
Doc, if you owned as well as used the lens for 1 hour you would have referred to many of those reviews as "mixed up". Photo forums (fora) abound with reviews of lenses by non-owners ("But it's not an L" crowd !) or by those unfortunate souls who got straddled with substandard copies.
Also, when talking about EF 50mm f/1.4USM, that is "de iure".
50 f/2.8....that's "de facto".
Obviously, my opinion based on my experience with the lens.

You're going to pay list, so I suggest a small camera store. I get the new, wait list items this way. The large internet retailers are the worst for these type of items.
Hmm, I got the 1Ds2 from B&H the day it started shipping. Won't get much bigger than B&H, nor much more waitlisted than the 1Ds2 at launch time. I had similar experience with the D60, same retailer, even worse waitlisting (several months on that camera at introduction). Pre-ordered the D60 a week before, the 1Ds2 on the day of its release.

No argument there -- I know better than to place much faith in anecdotes.
I'm mainly making a price-value argument, though, from a devil's advocate point of view.
Look, everyone wants high quality and everyone wants low prices.
The issue of how much money a qualitative difference is worth is quite personal. As an amateur the 85 f/1.8 and Tamron 28-75 fit into my calculus much differently than if I made my money taking photos.

Yeah, and endgaget got it off this forum. And also got the sensor size wromg. around and around we go.....
You keep saying that, but how do you know they got it off this forum? They don't say say it came from fm.com forums.. Also, they (mistakenly) report it as a full-frame, and I'm pretty sure people from this forum wouldn't have said that it was full-frame.

Not sure what you're saying except the first sentence. B&H had a wait list of several months on the 5D, but it was on the shelf in small stores. B&H had a wait list for the new 85 1.2L. But the web site listed it as "In Stock" and I bought one from them that day. They didn't fill the wait list.
I buy a lot of stuff from B&H. But with them and other big stores, being "number 8" on the wait list doesn't mean you will receive the 8th item they receive. All it means is that you are one ahead of the guy listed as number 9.
Small stores seem to be able to get one or two of the first batch of a new item.

The press release was posted here first and he didn't read it carefully. What's hard to understand?
