Was I dreaming, or was there a thread last night about a new 5D and a 18.5 mp 1Ds2 replacement that has now been deleted? Some new lenses such as a 35mm f1.8 and a 100-400mm f4 or someting.
yes, that is correct - the rumor was 2 bodies as mentioned by pmp6, new 35, updated 100-400IS, and new 400IS. If it is true the guy was not very bright to post it in the first place, it would have jeopardized his source.
Hmmmmm. I like those rumors.....
The combined 1 series would be a great camera if they drop the price to $4999 (or lower) retail. it's got to have better DR though, because other wise a small MP update isn't worth the trouble.
A new 400 f/5.6? Why do we need another slow 400mm lens?
Unfortunately I just bought my 100-400. I've always thought that the lens was too slow at 4.5-5.6 so I'd be excited about the f/4 version. If this rumor is true, and the price of the new lens is reasonable, I wonder how much the value of the original 100-400 is going to plummet.
Nah, I was looking for that thread this morning and didn't see it. I have the 35L and I'm holding on to it so not that interested in the 35 f1.8 (if true of course). Of course, it's less than a stop difference, so my guess it will be more than the 85 f1.8?
Here's hoping if the 5D+ rumor is true the new AF has more cross-sensors on the side. I guess we'll know in about 12 days if things are true or not.
Oh, and the 400 5.6 was a good upgrade because of the IS.
Hmm removing a thread with all posts, nothing in the profile posts-history any more, removed from the roots to the leaves, with no message from the administrator... looks like a hard censorship.

As I recall, the deleted thread (now plausible because of the deletion) called the new 100-400 an "upgrade." But a 100-400 f4 would be a completely different animal from the f4.5-56 -- much bigger, much much more expensive. The Nikon 200-400 f4 weighs 7 lbs and costs 5k.
The 18.5 mp @ 5 fps modes on the alleged 1Ds/1D -like body just does not seem like much of an upgrade to a 1Ds2. It would have to also feature better high ISO performance, better DR, and to motivate 1Ds2 owners to upgrade. Also, a 1Ds2 like price would make the body less attractive to 1D2N owners to upgrade just to get 10 mp @8.5 fps.
Not sure why the thread was deleted, but the info does not seem to make sense.

And how do you know it's not the O.P. that just deleted his post
Any chance that you guys think the new 100-400mm f/4 lens could possibly utilize the new DO optic technology The Nikon is very large, and to add another 100mm at the short end would make room for a very unportable lens The only reason why I would keep my current 100-400mm and save for the new f/4 version from scratch would be for the shear portability factor that the current one offers. It's very lightweight, retracts to become very small, has IS, and a nice range. Nonetheless, I would LOVE to have a constant f/4 version for my daytime and even late-afternoon sports photography.

I figure the Digic 3 in addition to the other features would do the trick for the 1Ds2 upgrade. I think they'll keep making the 1d2n for some time, and maybe they're figuring it'll be the next version of the unified 1 body that will get the residual sports and wildlife shooters to upgrade.
10 mp at 8.5 and full-frame is just about equivalent to the 1d2n for reach, and it's interesting that Arthur Morris, who is Canon's flagship bird guy, has recently converted from the N to the 1Ds2.
I think the deleted thread specs are plausible. Of course price will be important; I doubt it would fly at 8k.
The 200-400 f4 is the only lens in the Nikon tele lineup Canon didn't have a match for, so something in that niche makes sense.

I didn't see the original thread but thanks for the information. As for the 100-400 being "much bigger, much much more expensive" there's really no reason for it to be "much bigger". It may be bigger, but it's only an f/4 lens, not a 2.8. Realistic examples include the new 24-105L and the 28-300L. The difference would come more from the design (push-pull vs. internal focusing) than anything else.
I'm also not sure what the cost of Nikon's lens has to do with reality; their lens is over priced by at least $3000 (but Nikon always takes advantage of their customers that way). For another egregious example, look at Nikon's 500mm lens - it costs $1700 more than Canon's does, and Canon doesn't give it away. Canon's pricing would not have to follow suit IMO, unless they want to gouge their customers the way Nikon does.
Oh well, we won't have long to wait before we know if any of these rumors are true. I tend to believe the 100-400 possibility more than the 18MP combined 1 series, but I'm just guessing.
I gather the poster, Tim, deleted it... Tim has close to 4000 posts here and I kind of doubt he would have posted it in the first place unless there was something to it.
Perhaps later he got cold feet and pulled the thread himself.
Anyhoo... it was entertaining reading and actually looked very realistic.
a merged 1D, 18.5 mp, 5 fps - 10 mp 8.5 fps digic 3. looks like current 1D
a 5D update or camera looking like a 5D, 6 fps, improved autofocus, digic 3. same sensor as 5D.
100-400 4L - improved IS
35 1.8
400 5.6 IS
I haven't seen the original post either, but I think those products are very realistic.
It's about time for the merged 1D to be released and this would fit to the 24th announcement, since it would be the begining of a 'legend'. New sensor, new image processor - new name
As this wouldn't come without Digic III it also makes sense to upgrade the 5D with those features. Although the 5D is a bit 'young' for that and the rebate goes until october here in Europe. So either the 5D replacement is only due for PMA 07 or it will only hit the market in november after the rebate has finished. Would be a good timing for Christmas sales as well.
However I'm looking forward to Canon's announcements.
Ah, I love Augusts before Photokina - Dreamin' is so sweat...
I still don't understand why Canon would use a 1.36x crop factor and yet nobody else questions that. If Conon does only manage to produce a weak, minor upgrade this would be a good opportunity for Nikon to produce a superior FF body. At least this mythical new Canon would not tempt me to upgrade.
