Agreed, Jeff. Fred has made some sacrifices to keep this site ad free and INDEPENDENT. He has been a most generous host to the photographic community for several years. It bothers me whenever I read snide, baseless comments that, in effect, call his character into question. Good grief!
I know, Dean, I know what you mean. I wonder how many people these days understand what they have here, and what Fred's given up to keep it this way. I guess the age of 'Internet Entitlement' is now in full swing...

You are absolutely right, this is possible here.
Maybe the OP just deleted the post...
On other sites, a thread can only be deleted by the OP if there is no reply yet (ie if number of posts is 1).
This thread and the mysterious missing thread is like a good Grisham book.
Like many others I must have read hundreds of rumor threads and yes... it does get a bit tiring but I decide when to tune in and when to block it out...most posts are obvious speculation posts. When I buy a camera I do know I cannot buy the next new thing that comes out but after two or three releases (1D IIn, 5D, 30D), I'm in the market again for a new camera within the next 6-8 months and for some reason this post (or the missing post) looked credible somehow. This is a great place for speculation and rumors and close to new release dates I find it entertaining. Remember before the Internet... phoning up Canon or Nikon to get them to mail you the latest brochures or you would read about new cameras in the monthly magazines?... I may pick up a used 1D2n or no n... or 5D... who knows...may stick with the 20D for a while yet...... have to balance needs/wants/wishes
Actually I now know that the thread I was watching was 'hidden' by a moderator. Perhaps it was for the better, sometimes we need to be protected when we do not realize it. I can't realistically complain, I pay less than $50 a year to be here (image upload) and should be greatful that someone is trying to watch out for me.
See, now there's a conspiracy to divert us from the content of the leak by talking about who deleted it, why, etc. As usual, THEY are very clever, but WE can see through them -- and it's further evidence that this is the real thing.
Back to 18.7 mp, 10mp at 8.5 fps, etc -- what's the price? Some crazed optimists talked about 5k and one realist mentioned 7k...

Ummm...well, where'd he "hide" it...on the grassy knoll?
Jeff says he didn't touch it. So, I guess you're saying a moderator from one of the other boards did the dasterdly deed? Maybe we should form an "FM Commission" and have a whole bunch of hearings to find out who did it and where the heck he "hid" it! More importantly, since Fred is independent of any pressure from Canon...what would possibly be the motive? Inquiring minds want to know!
As a 30D owner, I would be more incline to buy an upgraded 5D as the price point would be around $2,500 to $3,000, whereas the new 1Ds would likely cost at least $7,000, a massive jump.
not commenting about this site and/or mods, but I've been a mod on other sites, and threads can in fact be hidden and only seen by other mods or the admin(s), though the topic is still there. Dependng on how the site is set up, a mod in a specific section can't usually edit posts/topics in other sections, unless they're all global mods (i.e. have most of the powers of the admin, without the ability to change forum settings) Based on things I've seen here, I'm led to think that the mods are more 'global' in nature. If that is true, any of the mods here could have in theory done anything, assuming the OP didn't delete it.
Not that I believe the conspiracy theories...
I didn't remember seeing anything about the 800L....though that would indeed be sweet...if way too expensive...I'd love a 100-400 4L....just hope it's not 2-3x more expensive...
I'll be in line to buy a 50 1.2L and 35 1.8 USM if they make em....
Isn't it logical to assume that maybe Canon is looking to eliminate 1 camera from its line?
Now merge the two 1d series cameras into one sweet $7000 18.7 MP body. Upgrade the 5D with faster FPS and hopefully better AF and weather seal. Boost the price to the $5000 range and keep the 30D and rebel as the 2 low end camera lines.
It makes sense to me but who knows. Maybe Canon has too much going on with 5 camera lines available.
I would be interested in both a merged 1D and a 5D if the improvements were close to the speculation.
Now and upgraded 100-400 is exciting to dream about. I both love and hate my 100-400 at the same time.
I wish it was faster and focused more accurate. So a new and improved version is up my alley.
Guess we will see soon what Canon is planning.
As far as rumors go. I have to believe that rumors are good to get ones hopes up. Its also a good resourse for camera manufactures to see what its current owners want in their next camera.
Taz, talk about something you know about. Jeff indeed did hide the thread. On software like this there is an easy way to hide rather than delete. That is his right as a moderator. So tell me something you know, I have found out what you don't know.
By the way, Taz, you would hide rather than delete in case you needed evidence of what happened. Do you think that all of us have access to all the threads on this board? Think again, there are plenty that only the mods or other selected individuals have access to.

I didn't see the original thread either
By saying "Jeff indeed hid the thread", he would have had to seen it. So first you impune Fred's character, and now you're calling one of his moderators a liar? Whewwww.....
What possibe motive would there be to delete it? You still haven't answered that. What don't you understand about the fact that this site is independent of advertisers influence?
And BTW, as a moderator on another photography forum I am well aware of sections that are reserved only for moderators...which means you wouldn't be able to see it there either.
Just what is the ax that you want to grind? Where do you get off publicly calling one of the moderators here a liar?

Well, assuming this is true, it seems to make some sense to me. The 1D MkIIN will be discontinued. The new 1Dwhatever will be the combined camera, but it will still be around $7,000. So, that would leave a huge gap between the 5D at 2500$ish and the new 1D. Hence, the new camera - 3D or whatever. 6fps and same pixel density as the 1D MKIIN would be good enough for some of the cheaper places as the $3500-4000 replacements.
Who knows if it is true... we shall see.
Chris
i think canon would still produce Mark IIN (for sport shooter who needs1.3x, low megapixel & reasonable price), because i guess the new Ds would be full frame eventhough it has 8.5fps, my 2 cents
I didn't see the original thread either (and thus obviously didn't delete it). The thread that should be deleted is this one! Let's see, regurgitating the content of a rumor thread from different people's memory, after the original (unsubstantiated) rumor thread's been deleted. The original rumor threads are bad enough!
You nailed it right on the head, Jeff. This thread is much worse than any of the rumor threads.
Dream? This thread is like a bad dream?
None of you know who the OP was? I'm shocked!! As much as everyone seems to want to snoop around, talk about conspiracies, and figure out who deleted a rumor thread!! I'm surprised no one remembers who posted that original thread and bothered to find out from him if he deleted it.

Exactly.
The OP would have made a comment here, if his thread was deleted.
I suggest this thread (this one) motive is now
- either, to inform us about who was the initial OP of the rumour
- or, to get info from the OP himself (who is maybe simply delighted in reading all these conspiracy stories... while i was one of them initially, missing the fact that it is possible at FM.com to delete one's own thread, even though there are replies in it - that i didn't know...)
yes I saw the original post but just thought that I may have been going silly when I couldnt find it.
First rule of any forum is that we shouldnt bag the moderators etc as you are looking for trouble.
Second, whoever deleted it obviously had a reason for doing so, be it the moderator, admin or OP. I am not familiar with this forum coding but if the OP can delete the thread then maybe that is the answer.
We have seen leaks in the past through canon websites etc in the days leading up to the release, anybody remember the release of the 24-105, I do.
We should end this thread and go to sleep tonight dreaming of a new 400 5.6IS as it would be lovely for my trip to africa coming up.
