It wouldn't tempt me to upgrade from my 5D either, unless there are a lot of yet-unspecified improvements. --c
This upgrade should not worry current 5D owners but may sway 20D owners who have been sitting on the fence contemplating an upgrade.

I still don't understand why Canon would use a 1.36x crop factor and yet nobody else questions that. If Conon does only manage to produce a weak, minor upgrade this would be a good opportunity for Nikon to produce a superior FF body. At least this mythical new Canon would not tempt me to upgrade.

I am assuming the merged 1D is FF, 18 mp, 5 fps
and cropped high speeed, 10 mp at 8.5 fps
but who am I to say... just speculating here
That's what the original poster indicated. It sounds very logical to me except the fact that it disagrees with what so many other people have indicated... a 22 MP FF sensor.
In terms of resolution, a 18.5 mp sensor (say 5256 x 3504 = 18.4 mp) would provide only 264 additional pixels in long direction and 176 additional pixels in short direction (1ds2 is 4992 x 3328 = 16.6 mp).
I just can't believe that after two additional years of engineering development since 1Ds2 that this is what they are bringing to market. A 6000 x 4000 sensor would be 24 mp.

Any chance that you guys think the new 100-400mm f/4 lens could possibly utilize the new DO optic technology The Nikon is very large, and to add another 100mm at the short end would make room for a very unportable lens The only reason why I would keep my current 100-400mm and save for the new f/4 version from scratch would be for the shear portability factor that the current one offers. It's very lightweight, retracts to become very small, has IS, and a nice range. Nonetheless, I would LOVE to have a constant f/4 version for my daytime and even late-afternoon sports photography. ...Show more →
So would that lens have a green ring or a red ring?

But it's consistent with diminishing returns on increased mp, which seems to be the Canon design trend. It doesn't go to the pixel density of the 30d, which I think would be around 22mp (?), but maybe the larger pixels allow for another substantial gain in high ISO low noise (ISO 6400?). And/or maybe more DR.
Well, assuming this is true, it seems to make some sense to me. The 1D MkIIN will be discontinued. The new 1Dwhatever will be the combined camera, but it will still be around $7,000. So, that would leave a huge gap between the 5D at 2500$ish and the new 1D. Hence, the new camera - 3D or whatever. 6fps and same pixel density as the 1D MKIIN would be good enough for some of the cheaper places as the $3500-4000 replacements.

Haha well of course it'd be green, so I suppose you can't consider it an "update" if it is not going to be in the same series, although I think it would be a great idea.

How do you know the original poster did not delete it? Did Tim tell you he didn't? Too much conspiracy thinking going on.
Keep in mind, Fred is not beholding to Canon for anything. He gets no ad revenue from them and he's never been known to be a preview reviewer for them (i.e., he has no NDA to worry about).
I want an ef-s, 30d sensored 1d mark IIn......is that so much to ask for?
The only thing that really interests me out of all of these rumoured products is the 35 f1.8........I would love having a better camera to mount my 10-22 and 17-55 IS on that will give me a good bit of reach with crop.

I am with you. I would love a high performance 1.6x crop camera. Like 8-10mp, 7-fps, 21 point AF system, weather sealed, built in grip, huge viewfinder, programmable auto ISO, and no pop up flash.
What's wrong with a pop-up flash? I know it's not any good for anything professional, but having it there (especially if it can be made to fire flashes wirelessly) could seem a benefit if no other flash was available (such as if one lost power/died).

Man, you guys are paranoid!
I didn't see the original thread either (and thus obviously didn't delete it). The thread that should be deleted is this one! Let's see, regurgitating the content of a rumor thread from different people's memory, after the original (unsubstantiated) rumor thread's been deleted. The original rumor threads are bad enough!
