I used to be a zoo photog and would get kids interested all the time. I usually let them look through the camera at whatever I was shooting. Most were surprised and genuinely thankful for the oppotunity. Perhaps one of them will turn out to be a pretty good photographer.

I actually haven't gotten pestered much about big lenses, just a bunch of friends teasing me when I first whipped out my 200/1.8 at a volleyball game. Now that I shoot in college I guess its expected, which is a nice change. But, I have freaked out people with the machine gun of the MK2, something that works especially well if you take corner in a small, crowded HS gym. All you need to do is fire a typical 2-3 frame burst, the shock is priceless

i was at the state fair at the motorbike jumping exhibition. it was crowded and i was standing about 6 deep from the front. then, one guy in front sees me, taps another guy on the shoulder and says something to him while pointing to me. they in turn say something to the people in front of them who then turn and look at me who then, in turn, do it with the people in front of them. next thing i know, they all part and offer me a space in the front! when i graciously declined, they insisted

I was shooting at the Jacksonville (FL) Zoo with the 70-200 2.8L IS and got the "Look at THAT lens" comment.
I have been given a press pass at a Water-Ski tournament when I walked into the tent with my 500 4.5 L (I had a staff pass on, but they didn't see it or didn't recognize it).
As for the flash shooters in the stands at major events, there must be literally hundreds of thousands of perfectly exposed sections of 3 rows of heads in front of the "operator."
Oh, and on the white vs black lens thing, I for one do think the white matters. People tend to notice it where they might miss the black lenses and also a white object "looks" bigger than a black one of equal size.
Anyway, keep this thread going, some of the stories are priceless!

Last week I was shooting the elephant seals - (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/333256#2827674) and the usual comments such as the ones listed here were in abundance, but there were 2 exchanges out of the ordinary - there is a small popout spot on the boardwalk, the fence makes a little 4' x 4' square thats ideal for a tripod to be set up away from all the people walking back and forth on the boardwalk - I always setup here, waiting if need be for it to clear, and then I'm planted for 3 or 4 hours....,
The first one was a guy with a 20D coming up all happy, "Hey is that a 600mm?" ya, and we chatted, and he asks "can I take a couple shots with my camera?" Pretty unusual for a stranger, but I didn't care and told him have a good time. He was laughing away, and said his wife wasn't going to believe the shots, he was really stoked - I bet he gets at least a 400 f5.6 out of that, if he's any good at all at the marriage barter game.....
Later, I was just starting to pull my gear together, the 600 is still up on the full Wimberley, and I had my back turned for a second - 3 kids, probably 4 to 9, come rushing up and CRAWL under the damn tripod, grabbing the legs, peering out at the seals through the fence! I couldn't believe it, and here comes dad, "Oh ya, kids, look you can see that baby now".....Dad's just like 'no big deal, it's public space, we got a right'.....or something, I don't know what the heck he was thinking.
I grabbed the tripod and just waited, the kids didn't know any better......

Hehehe... this is an incredibly fun thread
I haven't had too many comments yet (maybe I need to get out more with my 70-200f4L).
I did have a couple comment on the "long white lens" as I crouched down in front of them to take some seagulls.
Another comment was I got was while I was shooting by the harbour after just getting my 350D... A group of girls looked at me while walking past me and one shouted out, "Hey, take MY photo!". Oddly enough, it was with the kit lens! I'm thinking that people are so used to seeing people take photos with tiny cameras held at arms length that holding a not-so-small camera up to your eye makes you stand out :P.

I don't have a white lens, but a few months ago I was at the O'Hare airport in Chicago with my 350D, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, the 1.4x TC, and the hood on hanging from my neck, and all the way from check-in to the gate, people were giving me looks.
Then, when I boarded the plane and was trying to get to my seat (I fly in the rear of the plane), I had people comment on the size of the setup like every 10 steps. Though they were just saying "nice camera", and I was replying with "thanks".
And this one time I was shooting from a moutain top, (same setup as before), and this older guy with some P&S started a conversation:
Him: Damn, how much zoom does your camera have?
Me: Like 3x. (I had to put it in layman's terms)
Him: Mine's got 10x.
Me. Yeah.
And I turned around and kept shooting.
And yet another time I was out with the same setup (no, it's not my most used lens, just most noticable), and some hot (and I mean HOT) saw me with that lens on a tripod as I was shooting down the street, and said "Wow, that's nice!" So I fired off a burst of a few frames (yeah, I know 350D only does 3fps, but for regular people that's still blazing fast), and could see a huge grin forming on her face.
Chicks love that stuff.

One more.
Just a few days ago on the New Year's Eve I was at the lakefront in Chicago setting up for the fireworks display.
350D and the kit lens (yeah, I know, but do "civilians" it's a serious piece of hardware", and emi-extended tripod in the other hand.
I hgad people give me stares, and people being afraid to pass in front of my camera even though it was just there, sitting on the tripod and I was like 2 feet away smoking a cigarette.
I passed a guy with a 1Ds MkII and (I think) 16-35L... Yeah, that didn't feel so good.

this thread really begs the question why Canon does not offer a black option on the longer lenses (for those of us living in areas not often visited by the sun)
fluorite distorts under heat. white helps reflect the heat and protect the optics.
i'd like the 70-200 much better if it were black, but i also think canon should do the 24-70 in a light color like nikon did with their 28-70 2.8 ED. That would be so trick..

I have a friend who's into Photography as well, and he has a 70-200IS that he uses with a film body.
He told me some women commented on the size of his setup by saying "wow, that's a big, white lens!". He replied with "Yeah, it doesn't have to be black to be long."

I got the entire Plaza de Armas-full of Peruvians staring at me as I hang around the square getting street photos during my just-concluded 3-week backpacking trip in Peru (Lima, Arequipa, Cuzco, Puno-Titicaca). Out of all the curious locals, a middle-aged man and his son approached me and started talking to me in Spanish.
"No entiendo espanyol," I said. :-). Had to rely on hand gestures and drawings to explain to him what image stabilization and Canon L lenses were.

I've also gotten the telescope question, mine was from a girl at the Atlantic City Air Show. She then showed me her P&S disposable and asked me if that would be okay.
It's hard to tell someone '$&*$ no!' without sounding like a jerk.
I really don't like the money/cost question, or any even remotely technical talk with people who don't understand photography. Here's a tip: don't talk focal length with people like that, they just want to know how many X's it is.
Then there's some people who adopt this blank stare when you try and tell them that your lens doesn't zoom.
p.7 #19 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?
The first time I took the 100-400 out was at some local races, and about 6 people stopped and talked to me with the lens as the conversation starter. Most were other photogs who were not really intersted in the lens per se, they just wanted to chat. Others just kinda looked at me funny when I said I wasn't getting paid ot take photos.
I was at the Ft. Worth Zoo a few months ago and the 100-400 got a lot of looks. Several people asked me questions and I was more than happy to answer.
The only thing that makes me uncomfortable is when people ask me how much my gear costs, as its not the kind of thing I want to advertise all over the place.
The "how many X zoom is that" question isn't much fun either, since most people have no clue what I'm talking about.
p.7 #20 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?
I get hassled at school while having my 20D w/ 70-200 f2.8 out. Too many stupid questions already covered in this thread. "How far can you see" etc etc etc....
